Caleb University, New Horizons certify students on e-business

Privately owned Caleb University Imota in Lagos in partnership with New Horizons, has produced certified Information Technology (IT) professionals in the area of electronic business.

Another landmark achievement in the area of ICT empowerment of our youths was achieved by Caleb University, one of Nigerian young and esteemed private University located at Imota in Lagos State.

According to the public relations officer at New Horizons, Mr. Yemi Sokoya, the University made this accomplishment with New Horizons, reputed for ICT training by certification of the first batch of 50 students who passed and obtained certificates of various international Certifications attempted.

The lists of Certifications passed which arrived from Comptia A+, Network +, EC Council CRM, and MCAS international exams groups he said, were presented to the students at a ceremony held recently on the University Campus, presided over by the Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Ayodeji Olukoju.

Speaking at the occasion, Prof. Olukoju lauded the international ICT training partnership with New Horizons.

He also said that it would enable graduates from the university to be problem solvers as well as job creators rather than job seekers.

While expressing joy over the development he noted that the great vision of the institution is being realized as it has started producing complete graduates who are academically sound, morally upright and to crown it all ,professionally relevant at the national and global level.

The VC further reinforced the necessity for IT empowerment for staff and students by citing the example of a recent recruitment exercise in the University. According to him after interviewing the applicants on their academic achievements and work experiences, they were all subjected to final assessments on IT/Computer skills and only computer-literate ones were finally employed because their productivity will be higher than those that are not IT Literate.

He further disclosed that the University is adopting a holistic approach to making the University a completely IT-driven institution by aligning the IT Infrastructures with IT skills and competences of students and staff of the University.

He cited an instance to the fact that between now and end of 2011, everything from registration to payment will be 100 per cent IT– driven and fully automated, even as the portal, he said will integrate e–learning, registration, and payment among others.

“When I took this job, and considering where we are geographically, I know the University will depend largely on ICT, media and social networking with people that we know for growth. The VC said the partnership with New Horizons had been on ground before he assumed office however he noted that the University would remain committed to the partnership given the fact that the University vision for the programme has begun to be realized coupled with the fact that IT/ E-Business is the driving force for growth and development globally today,” he said.

Equally speaking, the General Manager, Universities’ Services, New Horizons, Mr. Bolaji Olaoye said that New Horizons pioneered IT Synergy Relationship with universities, colleges and primary education institution in Nigeria since 2005 in line with happenings in the developed economies of the world.

“The purpose is to ensure that Nigerian graduates are able to combine professional international certifications with their academic qualifications for the purpose of enhancing their employability and entrepreneurial opportunities after graduation,” he said.

Jobs, he said, are shrinking by the day and it is being confirmed that international certifications have been helping Nigerian graduates to expand their employability as well as self-employment prowess to both national and international horizons by being able to compete with their counterparts from anywhere in the world.

According to Olaoye, The Nigerian Universities Commission and other education stakeholders have consistently clamored for integrating high – end international IT and E-Business courses and certifications into our tertiary education curricula to boost the standard of our graduates.

ITRealms Online recalls that New Horizons has similar partnership with 12 universities, both public and private, including Babcock, Covenant, Crawford, UI, Lead City, Crescent, Bowen and MKAR Universities.
