MTel introduces free calls on net

Definitely awake from a slumber, the Nigerian Mobile Telecommunications Limited (Mtel), weekend, announced the introduction of free calls and short messaging services (SMS) among its subscribers, even as the telco said it has slashed its international tariff.

Deputy General Manager, Corporate Communications at Mtel, Mr. Abdul-Hamid Umar, in a press statement made available to Champion Infotel, quoted the Acting Chief Executive, Mtel, Mr. Ladi Williams as saying at the unveiling of its latest customer loyalty reward package that the free on net calls and SMS was a way of giving back to its customers for their undiluted passion for the Mtel brand.

He also said that the free Mtel-to-Mtel calls and SMS, come alongside all time low tariff of 57 kobo per second for calls to other networks.

“And in keeping with the tradition of ensuring that Mtel subscribers have the best international calling rate, that Mtel has further reviewed its international tariff to as low as N30 per minute or N0.50 kobo per second,” he said.

Mr. Williams added that Mtel’s Subscriber Identification Modulation (SIM) card, which cost N300, is now bundled with free N200 airtime on connection, meaning that the actual cost is just N100, for the SIM.

He explained that additional incentive to subscriber as the Xmas season approaches is the discount on recharge cards.

“The N2,000 card attracts 20 per cent (N400) discount, that is, an additional free N400 airtime is given. The N1000 card attracts 15 per cent discount (N150), an offer of N150 free airtime. The N400 and N250 recharge cards attract 10 per cent discount which amount to N40 and N25 free airtime respectively,” he outlined.

According to him, Mtel had begun a structured restoration and rehabilitation plan of its network, noting that Mtel services have improved significantly in Abuja.

“The gradual but steady restoration of the Mtel network was a deliberate and conscious attempt for the removal of the glitches previously noticeable on Mtel,” he said.

Stressing that the company had carried out an intensive audit of the issues and elements that made the brand lose its high quality of service attributes that it was noted for in the early days of the evolution of the GSM services in Nigeria, and is keen in offering remedy.
