The Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC), has urged youths to join the committee to ensure prevention of incessant
armed robbery, kidnapping, terrorism and other criminal activities in the community.
The National Vice Chairman South West Geopolitical Zone of Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC), Elder Prince Sunny Yemi Adenowo, said the youths are the greater of tomorrow and once they are not carried along and catch them young in community policing it will jeopardize the image of the community in future.
He lamented that in recent times youths have been involved in different kind of crimes such as drug abuse, ritual killings, eager to be a millionaire or billionaire at the age of 18, 19, 20, 22 and 23.
Therefore engaging youths in community policing will reduce all these kind of crimes.
He said these at the inaugural lecture of PCRC South West Youths dialogue and 41st anniversary of PCRC, held at Lagos State Police Area ‘C’ Command, Surulere, Lagos.
He said there is need to carry every youth at the grassroots level along in order to teach them how to live life of righteousness, so that they can be able to preach the gospel to other youths that crime does not pay.
He explained that by the time PCRC brings our youths on board in community policing and preach gospel of truth to them there should be a greater future for the youths and greater future the country at large.
Adenowo stated PCRC is a community policing based organization established by the Leadership of Nigeria Police Force in 1984 to foster a partnership between the Police and the community members with a view to enhancing efficient and effective policing of communities in Nigeria.
He explained that with the increase in the crime in the society today there is need to engage youths to reduce the rate of crime in daily basis.
The Public Relation Officer (PRO), National Youth Committee PCRC, Comrade Kunle Sodipo, said the youths are the strength bearers in the community as they still agile and have the ability to identify security threats to be able to prevent crimes in the community.
Therefore, youths need to be carried along in community policing, as the community need the strength of the youths and the wisdom of the elders in order to survive in the community.
He noted that the elders have the experience, the wisdom and if they can engage youths and tap from their strength that should give better results. “Youths are very important in community policing they are the key as we must see them as leaders of today and not leaders of tomorrow”.
He urged the youths that are jobless that in every situation there are opportunities, though it is obvious government is not doing enough in creating jobs for the youths. But there are opportunities everywhere as youths should not focus in only white cola jobs.
“The reason we go to school is to known how to read and write to be educated and enlightened, for instance, someone who read medicine, marketing, business administration or accounting does not mean the individual will practice the profession in life.
He said youths should learn to save money like they said in Yoruba proverb, one should not use ten fingers to eat as some youths are not managing the little resources they have properly.
He said: “For instance, a big ocean start with little drop of water therefore, youths should learn to start with the little resources they have and develop it”.
The Area Commander Area C Command, Abayomi Oni, said the gesture was to tell the community members that Police officers are fully prepared for them in terms of security of life and property in the community.
He urged members of the community to always provide useful information to the police to enable them to survive in security of the Surulere Community and Lagos State at large.
