Tri-Continental, IBM host dynamic seminar in Lagos

The importance of dynamic infrastructure took the centre stage recently in Lagos at a seminar on technology update organized by Tri-Continental Ltd in conjunction with the International Business Machines (IBM).

This event was intended to discuss the critical role that the dynamic infrastructure plays in the IBM vision.

A press statement made available to ITRealms Online quoted the Storage Business Development Manager at Tri-Continental Ltd, Mr. Ernest Fundirwa, as saying that building a smarter planet is IBM’s point of view on how interconnected technologies are changing the way the world literally works.

Mr. Fundirwa who dwelt on the new innovation center in Lagos, noted that the systems and processes, have enabled physical goods to be developed, manufactured, bought and sold; services to be delivered; everything from people and money to oil, water and electrons to move; and billions of people to work, govern themselves and live.

The seminar, attended by various Chief Information officers (CIOs) and their teams, cut across banks, telcos and consultants, also have Mr. Sola Olojede from Tri-Continental Ltd, dwelling on IBM education, while Mr. Ethelbert Mbama of IBM West Africa spoke on IBM software offerings and Mr. Dave Funnel from IBM South Africa, deliberated on IBM Storage trends, all in line with the ‘Smarter Planet’ theme.

For Mr. Fundirwa, at a societal level and within an organization, there are growing realization that physical and Information Technology (IT) assets, systems, and infrastructure are reaching a breaking point.

“As the pace of business and the world continues to accelerate, the physical and digital foundations on which progress depends are straining to keep up,” he said.

Specifically, he highlighted the explosion of data, transactions, and digitally-aware devices as straining IT infrastructure and operations, pointing out that exponential growth in communications subscriptions and services usually expose limitations in bandwidth and storage capacity.

In addition, he outlined that supply inefficiencies as well as demand spikes put pressure on energy and utility systems, while clogged and congested roadways impact on human productivity. Whereas, networks, supply chains, and borders face a proliferation of new risks and threats.

He assured that Tri-Continental Ltd and IBM would continue to host similar events regularly in an effort to keep customers up-to-date with the latest technologies.
