Nigeria has improved software quality – NCS boss

Remmy Nweke

Standards of software being developed locally have been improved with increased participation, says the President, Nigeria Computer Society (NCS), Dr. Chris Nwannenna.

He made this known at the recently held third Software Developers Summit (SDS), held in Lagos, while giving his address, asserting that apart from this, participation in the summit has also garnered momentum.

"Nigeria Computer Society has noted with a lot of satisfaction that the number and quality of participation in this event has been on the increase, a clear indication that our campaign in this direction is genuine and succeeding," he said.

NCS, he noted, though may be celebrating the third edition of the Software Developers’ Summit, an event that has continued to emphasize the need for priority attention to the issue of indigenous software development.

This year’s summit, he said held under the theme "Indigenous Software Development: Multiple Technologies" aimed at focusing on emerging paradigms for development and deployment of applications software in a number of areas not always too obvious to most of us.

"Demand for applications that incorporate such technologies like biometric, geographic information systems (GIS), mobile systems and so on, are on the increase and need to attract our attention," he said.

Software development, Dr. Nwannenna, who also is the chief executive, Condata Systems, noted is a sector that the nation would not overemphasize.

"It has the importance and potential for generating income for this country," he said. NCS members, he further said, have as a result committed themselves to developing International Standard Organisation (ISO) quality based software that will enhance the acceptance of our products and services.

In addition to the cooperation NCS has with NITDA in this direction, the group, he said, will soon appoint a technical partner and consultant to enhance these efforts.

"We also hope that development partners will assist us with both technical and financial support," Dr. Nwannenna enthused.

And that was why the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) was represented at the event and NCS look forward to the organization working with the authorities to achieve overall objective.

Equally, he pointed out that the issue of "convergence" has become a key parameter to shape government policies in information technology, telecommunications, and broadcasting in the very near future.

"NCS is very pleased to be part and parcel of this development and will provide very professional counsel that will help the government remove all the impediments that have stunted the growth of the IT sector in the country," he declared.

The NCS president also commended some of its members for their support in ensuring that SDS is held annually, noting that recently Infographics Nig. Ltd, bagged the Regional Winner Award for 2006 at the Microsoft Worldwide Partner Conference in Boston, USA for its work on Project eServe, the e-government initiative of the Federal Capital Territory Abuja.

Also he congratulated Zinox Technologies Ltd who received ISO 90001 certification of quality from the Standard Organisation of Nigeria.
