CelTel unveils expansion strategies

Remmy Nweke

The latest entrant into the nation’s telecommunications market, CelTel has unveiled its strategies for expansion in the country, which the telco said would bring about reduced tariff in the Global System for Mobile communications (GSM) sub-sector.

Giving this indication recently in Abuja, Chief Operations Officer (COO), Mr. Lars Stork, said that its strategies would pave the way for lowering of cost of services, stressing that huge operational cost of operators, is one of the key source of cost of service.

The COO also said that the basic route to lower tariff is reduced cost of operation, describing it as “a factor, generally regarded as the major impediment to lower tariff regime of GSM service.”

Dwelling on “Commercial Strategies for Cooperation and Expansion” a paper he deliver at the just ended 5th International Nigeria telecommunications Summit held at the International Conference Centre Abuja, Mr. Stork noted that another factor capable of transforming the operating cost is the public and private partnership, especially in the provision of key requirement for successful GSM operation.

He emphasised that increased local service is realizable through government and industry support for Nigerian suppliers in open and transparent tenders to compete for supply of cost effective solutions plus sharing of expertise across the networks for synergy and greater efficiency.

He further listed speeding up of local research aimed at building capacity and reducing dependence on offshore supplies, sharing co-location infrastructure among operators where technically and commercially viable and optimising the economy of scale of operators with big buying power.

Mr. Stork went on to say that Celtel would continue to be a vital driver for development as demonstrated by the company’s experience across 15 African countries.
