Yet it was in October 2005 that his aura transcended sport: after Côte d’Ivoire’s historic World Cup qualification, while his homeland stood divided, Drogba fell to his knees, imploring the combatants to lay down their arms, a rare gesture that, if only for a time, suspended civil conflict.
