Commmendation galore for Globacom @ 7

It was a commendation galore, last weekend as Globacom celebrated the seventh anniversary of rolling out its Global System for Mobile communications in the country.

Some of those who commended Globacom included a community leader in Edo State, Mr. Aderemi Oloruntobi, and a resident of Enugu, Enugu State, Mr. Osakwe Joshua.

Mr. Oloruntobi who spoke from Ososo, Akoko Edo Local Government of Edo State, described Globacom as the joy of the nation and the pride Africa.

“... I see Globacom as the joy of the nation Nigeria and the pride of Africans all over the world. Nobody ever believed that anything close to Globacom’s achievement can ever come out of this country, but a Nigerian has proved and demonstrated that with commitment and perseverance, nothing is impossible to achieve. Globacom is the summary of our resilience and I give kudos to the owners and management of the company for making us walk tall among other peoples of the world,” he said.

Oloruntobi also said that nobody believed that Globacom could continue to thrive in spite of the fact that it began operations three years after its competitors, pointing out that today, Glo’s incredible achievements as an indigenous company is the reason why Nigerians have cause to celebrate the phenomenon that is Globacom.

He noted that Globacom achieved the feat of single-handedly laying a submarine cable from Europe to Africa, “in the years to come, there is no doubt that Globacom will spring a lot of other surprises in that sector of our national life”.

Equally, speaking, Mr. Osakwe Joshua, a resident of Enugu said that what he found most fascinating about Globacom is the way the company is opening up rural areas and making the hinterland part of the global community.

“I am very convinced that Globacom is not all about money or profit, otherwise the company will not be putting up network (base) stations in all the villages. This goes to show that Globacom is concerned about taking telecom services to Nigerians irrespective of their economic status or where they live” he said.

Globacom, it would be recalled, obtained the ‘Second National Operator (SNO) licence in 2003 and rolled out officially in Abuja and Lagos in August of the same year with the much desired per second billing system that earlier operators said was not feasible.

Beyond pioneering many innovative services and making telephony easily accessible to the common man, Globacom has since extended its aggressive rollout strategy beyond the shores of Nigeria as it operates in Benin Republic and is about to launch its world class service in Ghana. Globacom also has operational licenses in Togo, Cote D’Ivoire, Senegal and Gambia.

This is in addition to its forthcoming commissioning of Glo 1, the 9,600 kilometre submarine cable that will enable Glo subscribers to enjoy the full possibilities offered by broadband technology with high quality direct links to various countries across the globe and interconnect with several international networks and leading traffic carriers in the world.
