ChineseVirus-19: ALTON, NCC warn over fake news on 5G causing COVID - ITREALMS

The Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) has advised telecom consumers to discountenance a purported claim that Fifth Generation (5G) is the root of ChineseVirus-19 also known as CoronaVirus or Covid-19, saying it lacks scientific prove, reports ITREALMS.

This came as the telecom regulator in the country, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has also dismissed the claim on 5G as the cause of Corona virus as claimed in certain quarters.

ALTON through its chairman, Engr Gbenga Adebayo told
ITREALMS that the video making a round on social media lacks scientific prove.

“There is no scientific prove and this rumor should be discontented,” he said, stressing that there is no scientific basis for the claim that 5G is responsible for Covid-19.

The world is still seeking to know the source of the infection virus and it had not been traced to anything, not to talk of telecommunications.

He warned that Nigerians should be careful about spreading such information.

“Science is different from fiction and the peddlers of such information should be careful not to misinform the public,” he warned.

The Federal Government, Adebayo noted, is already doing a lot to curb the spread and this type of information is capable of causing diversion from the reality of what the world is facing and the scientific steps needed to curtail the spread.

He urged all well-meaning citizens of the world especially in Nigeria to continue to join hands with Government in their efforts “to keep us all safe.”

Adebayo posited that looking at 5G penetrating so far and the number of countries with incidences of mortality due to Covid-19, there is no basis to relate this to 5G.

“Many of those countries do not have 5G in commercial use. This virus was said to have started in Wahum in China, there are many other provinces of China with 5G that were not affected by the virus,” he pointed out, maintaining that there is no scientific prove and this rumor should be discontented.
ITREALMS gathered that there have been extensive social media outrages over audio clips circulating on social media especially WhatsApp and Telegram by a Nigerian living in United Kingdom (UK) and unknown former CEO of Vodafone that 5G is the root of current pandemic occasioned as Chinese Virus-19 also known as Coronavirus or COVID-19.

Also, in his reaction, NCC through its Director, Public Affairs, Dr. Henry Nkemadu asked Nigerians to avoid being distracted by such fake news videos, saying that currently, Nigeria is not installing any satellite with respect to 5G, therefore the claims are unfounded.

He described those as propaganda videos, stressing that the world is in a perilous times and everybody seem to be looking for what to hang unto. Some are using them to preach end times and all manner of things.

He rather advised Nigerians to focus on the more likely the threat of 5G that requires robust societal conversations, which borders on its adoption for an open society.

Curbing fake news is social responsibility says Amolo – ITREALMS

ITREALMS:

Fact checking on suspected fake news has been described as a social responsibility of every stakeholders in the news industry, which requires the understanding of its implications by any news manager in this era, says Emmanuel Caine Amolo, reports ITREALMS.

Speaking at the one-day workshop held recently by The Republic Media in Lagos, Amolo, an editor with The Beat99 fm charged media practitioners especially journalists to make efforts at understanding the implications of fake information and guard against sharing same as news.

“We all need to understand the implications of fake information and guard against sharing them as news,” he declared, urging that the positive change of checkmating this for every well-meaning media practitioners.

Dwelling on ‘Fact-Checking Tools to curb fake information’ Amolo said some fact-checking tools handle specific aspects of fake information such as plagarised texts, altered images, manipulated audios and videos as well as websites and individual accounts on social sites.

Decrying the fact that fake information purveyors are getting ever more sophisticated with their so-called ‘craft,’ Amolo pointed out that is for news persons to check them, “require a mix of traditional journalistic meticulousness, and up-to-date procedures in engaging with internet software.”

Some of the fact-checking tools for altered or recycled images, he listed to include TinEye, Google Reverse Image Search, Yandex, Jeffrey's Image Metadata Viewer, and FotoForensics.

And tools for fact-checking videos, GeoSearchTool, Amnesty International: YouTube DataViewer, InVid, and Mapping.

Tools for checking plagarised texts, he listed to include Who Tweeted It First, Grammarly, NoPlag, Plagiarism Checker and CopyLeaks.

While other fact-checking tools, he said comprised of Inteltechniques.com, Adobe Audition, Foller.me, Weaather underground, Who.is, Graph.tips for Facebook, to name but a few.

Amolo highlighted that TinEye, for instance, creates a “unique and compact digital signature” and compares it with its enormous 26 billion image dataset. Stressing that Google Reverse Image Search, visit and upload or drop your image by clicking on the camera icon. You can also use this on mobile using the browser menu and selecting ‘request desktop site.’

He also explained that Yandex, for instance, is similar to Google Reverse Image Search, and could download or drop any image into the search box. Just as Jeffrey's Image Metadata Viewer, is handy to find out particularly if “you are unsure when a photo was taken from,” noting that most social media platforms strip metadata from images.

In addition, FotoForensics, put in an image Uniform Resource Locator (URL) or drag a photo into this free tool to see how much editing has been done to it, describing it as a “Great tool for fact-checking fake photos” among others.

Buhari accepts Finance Minister, Adeosun resignation over fake certificate - ITREALMS

Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari, Friday accepted the resignation of the Hon. Minister of Finance, Mrs Kemi Adeosun, over alleged certificate forgery, reports ITREALMS.

He also thanked the Minister for her services to the nation and wished her well in future pursuits, and consequently approved that the Minister of State Budget and National Planning, Mrs Zainab Ahmed, should oversee the Ministry of Finance with immediate effect.

This was confirmed to ITREALMS by Mr. Femi Adesina, Special Adviser to the President on Media & Publicity, late Friday, September 14, 2018.

ITREALMS also gathered that Mrs. Adeosun had said in her resignation letter dated same day and made available to ITREALMS, acknowledged she resigned due to alleged forged Certificate of Exemption from National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) obtained for her when she relocated to Nigeria and equally presented same as genuine, unknown to her.

While describing the revelation by media as a shock, Adeosun believed that in line with this administration’s focus on integrity, “I must do the honourable thing and resign.”

Below is the full text of Mrs Adeosun’s resignation letter.

"14th September, 2018

His Excellency
Muhammadu Buhari
President, Federal Republic of Nigeria
State House
Aso Villa
Abuja

Dear Excellency,

Let me commence by thanking you profusely for the honour and privilege of serving under your inspirational leadership. It has been a truly rewarding experience to learn from you and to observe at close quarters your integrity and sense of duty.

I have, today, become privy to the findings of the investigation into the allegation made in an online medium that the Certificate of Exemption from National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) that I had presented was not genuine. This has come as a shock to me and I believe that in line with this administration’s focus on integrity, I must do the honourable thing and resign.

Your Excellency, kindly permit me to outline some of the background to this matter. I was born and raised in the United Kingdom, indeed my parental family home remains in London. My visits to Nigeria up until the age of thirty-four (34) were holidays, with visas obtained in my UK passport. I obtained my first Nigerian passport at the age of thirty-four (34) and when I relocated there was debate as to whether NYSC Law applied to me. Upon enquiry as to my status relating to NYSC, I was informed that due to my residency history and having exceeded the age of thirty (30), I was exempted from the requirement to serve. Until recent events, that remained my understanding.

On the basis of that advice and with the guidance and assistance of those, I thought were trusted associates, NYSC were approached for documentary proof of status. I then received the certificate in question. Having never worked in NYSC, visited the premises, been privy to nor familiar with their operations, I had no reason to suspect that the certificate was anything but genuine. Indeed, I presented that certificate at the 2011 Ogun State House of Assembly and in 2015 for Directorate of State Services (DSS) Clearance as well as to the National Assembly for screening. Be that as it may, as someone totally committed to a culture of probity and accountability I have decided to resign with effect from Friday, 14th September, 2018.

Your Excellency, It has been an exceptional privilege to have served our nation under your leadership and to have played a role in steering our economy at a very challenging time. I am proud that Nigeria has brought discipline into its finances, has identified and is pursuing a path to long term sustainable growth that will unlock the potential in this great economy. Under your leadership, Nigeria was able to exit recession and has now started to lay the foundations for lasting growth and wealth creation. Repositioning this huge economy is not a short term task and there are no short cuts, indeed there are tough decisions still to be made but I have no doubt that your focus on infrastructural investment, revenue mobilisation and value for money in public expenditure will deliver growth, wealth and opportunity for all Nigerians.

I thank His Excellency, the Vice President and my colleagues in the Federal Executive Council for the huge pleasure and honour of working with them. I also thank most specially, the team in the ‘Finance Family’ of advisers and heads of agencies under the Ministry of Finance. Your Excellency, this group of committed Nigerians represent a range of backgrounds, ethnicities and ages. They have worked well above and beyond the call of duty to support me in the tasks assigned. The diversity in my team and their ability to work cohesively to deliver reforms, convinces me that Nigeria has the human capital required to succeed.

Your Excellency, let me conclude by commending your patience and support, during the long search for the truth in this matter. I thank you again for giving me the honour of serving under your leadership, it is a rare privilege, which I do not take for granted. As a Nigerian and committed progressive, I appreciate you for your dogged commitment to improving this nation.

Please be assured, as always, of my highest regards and best wishes

Kemi Adeosun (Mrs)"

Lai Mohammed says 'Opposition using fake news tool against Buhari' - ITREALMS

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has accused the opposition of resorting to the use of fake news as a campaign tool against the President Muhammadu Buhari's administration ahead of the 2019 general elections, reports ITRealms.

The Minister made the remarks in Abuja on Monday when he visited the corporate headquarters of the Authority Newspapers to kick-start the media tour in furtherance of the campaign against fake news, which was recently launched by the federal government.

He said because the Buhari Administration is performing well, the political opposition believed that the best way to de-market the administration is by latching on to fake news to create religious and ethnic disharmony and throw the country into turmoil.

“With the Buhari Administration delivering on its promises to fight corruption, build the nation's economy and tackle insecurity, the opposition has realized it will not make any impact if it takes on the Administration on that turf. So, it has decided to take the easy route, which is to use fake news and hate speech to de-market the Administration, pitch Christians against Muslims and one ethnic group against another,” he said.

Alhaji Mohammed said the opposition has thrown caution to the wind in its futile attempt to divide Nigeria along ethnic and religious lines by using fake news to blame all the killings in a certain part of the country on herdsmen, ignoring the bands of deadly militia groups that are being sponsored by unscrupulous people to kill innocent people and put the nation on edge.

He cited the example of how the opposition is distorting the fact that the clashes between the farmers and herders are being aggravated by climate change - which has heightened the contest for scarce natural resources like water and land - as well as demographic pressure.

The Minister said the morbid fear the opposition harbors that when he is re-elected in 2019, President Buhari will consolidate on the fight against corruption, has thrown the opposition camp into confusion, hence the frenzy with which they fabricate and publish fake news in order to cast the government in bad light.

“Many politicians know that the only way to distract this government is to spread fake news and they are being very selfish and they have amassed so much wealth that they can continue to sponsor fake news at a very dangerous level for as long as they want.

“Many of them have this morbid fear of the President being re-elected because they know that in his second term, the war against corruption will start yielding fruits. There are so many cases in court today and they are just praying and doing everything to distract the government so that their cases will be scuttled,” he stated.

Alhaji Mohammed said that for the first time in the history of Nigeria, there is a re distribution of the nation's wealth from a few to the generality of the public

He said the Administration's Social Investment Programme is providing one meal a day for 8.5 million pupils across 23 states; the Conditional Cash Transfer is empowering 400,000 families with N5,000 every month, the Government Enterprises and Empowerment Programme is making available loans to artisans and craftsmen as well as market women while the N-Power Programme has provided employment for over 200,000 unemployed graduates.

The Minister commended the Authority Newspapers for being the first media outlet to write an Editorial in support of the campaign against fake news, saying he chose to kick-start the media tour with the newspaper in appreciation of their efforts.

FG launches campaign against fake news, its threat to democracy - ITREALMS Online

The Federal Government (FG) has launched campaign against what it tagged as ‘fake news’ in the nation’s capital, Abuja, and declared it as threat to democracy, reports ITRealms.

Disclosing this to ITRealms, Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed said Wednesday that the campaign has become imperative to avoid the dangerous dimensions of fake news, which includes threat to peace and security.

“There is an epidemic sweeping the world. If left unchecked, it could be worse than all the plagues that the world has recorded put together. It is a clear and present danger to global peace and security. It is a threat to democracy. It is the epidemic of Fake News. Mixed with hate speech, it is a disaster waiting to happen,” he lamented.

Lai Mohammed cited an instance with the nation’s media, saying epidemic is even worse because fake news, in most cases are designed to misinform, undermine confidence in the media, stressing that once the people lose confidence in the media, the society is in trouble.

“For the record, the free online encyclopaedia defines fake news as 'a type of yellow journalism or propaganda that consists of deliberate misinformation or hoaxes spread via traditional print and broadcast news media or online social media. This false information is mainly distributed by social media, but is periodically circulated through mainstream media,” he said.

The Minister also noted that fakes news is not new, but pointed out that what has made it an issue of concern is the means and speed at which it is now spreading around the world, via social media.

“Anyone with a phone and internet access can author and make fake news go viral in minutes. With the number of mobile phone users in the world expected to pass the 5 billion mark by 2019, you can see the kind of crisis we face,” he warned.

Passing flyairpeace.com as fake, is handiwork of competitors – Mgt

The management of Air Peace Limited has refuted allegations making rounds that some set of people have been duped on its official website, www.flyairpeace.com, and pronounce same site as fake, is the handwork of competitors, ITRealms can authoritatively report.

Reacting to exclusive investigations by ITRealms on the purported report of “Fake AirPeace Airline website … Many duped of millions of Naira,” the management of Air Peace through the Corporate Communications Manager, Mr. Chris Iwarah, denied any such activities on its website, insisting that its obviously the handiwork of competitors who are scared of Air Peace's progress and success.

According to him, rather than engage in healthy competition, these failing airlines have resorted to all forms of ill-strategies to either dissuade members of the public from visiting AirPeace authentic website or patronising its flight services, which are unarguably the best in the country at the moment.

Iwarah maintained that www.flyairpeace.com remain the authentic website of Air Peace, stressing, “Anyone who claims to have been duped could not have visited this website. A simple click on the posted site here will prove that.”

He explained that the first thing visitors to the website see is their fraud alert, declaring that “You can't access the website without closing the fraud alert. So, there is no question of anybody not seeing it.”

Air Peace, he said, has not only reported cases of alleged fraud to the police and other security agencies, but also encouraged those who claimed to have been duped to do so, adding that immediately the cases of fraud were brought to Air Peace's attention, they took out advert spaces in four major national newspapers to further alert members of the public on the activities and modus operandi of the fraudsters.

ITRealms also gathered that Air Peace ensures proper reportage of the development by all major print, electronic and social media platforms, hence it the airline has not only provided members of the public its authentic website and other social media accounts, but also seriously warned members of the public against making payments to people claiming to be Air Peace agents.

Air Peace, he said, has reported all identified fake sites to the hosts, who most of the time swiftly acts by pulling them down.

Iwarah further said that the said online platform which is carrying alleged ‘fake website” never approached Air Peace for comments on the issue.

“It is shocking how a news medium that wishes to be taken seriously will concoct outright falsehood and attempt to put it in the public domain as the truth,” he said, insisting that Air Peace will never ask anyone to make payments to private accounts for any reason.

“Members of the public should be much more diligent in their transactions to avoid being duped by unscrupulous persons,” he said, advising those who may still be doubt to contact Air Peace, headquarters at Ikeja-G.R.A.
