Breaking News: Google offers WhatsApp users free backups - ITREALMS

Google has commenced offering of free backups for WhatsApp users with immediate effect, reports ITREALMS.

This is coming as the Google Drive storage quota for such WhatsApp backups no longer counts against anyone using Google mail (gmail).

ITREALMS gathered that this follows latest agreement between WhatsApp and Google, however, any “WhatsApp backups that have not been updated in more than a year will automatically be removed from storage.”

This policy, ITREALMS equally gathered, will go into effect for all users on November 12, 2018 though some users may see the quota benefits earlier.

“To avoid the loss of any backups, we recommend that people manually back up WhatsApp before November 12, 2018,” Google Drive Team said.

In addition, they recommended some actions including that account users confirm that their current WhatsApp client is backed up and if they wish to refresh any existing backups, “please manually back up your WhatsApp client before October 30, 2018.”

Truecaller soars to 100m daily active users

The Truecaller app has reached over 100 million active users in less than a year following is leapfrogging from 100 million monthly active users (MAUs) per month to 100 million daily active users (DAUs), and is growing faster than ever, reports ITRealms.

With over 20 per cent of its user-base in Africa, Truecaller app service identifies more than half a billion calls a month in the region, and 50 per cent of SMS received were spam.

ITRealms gathered that in Nigeria the application blocks and filters more than 13 million calls and 25 million spam SMSes per month.

From people predominantly using Nokia and BlackBerry phones, to a wide array of Androids and Apple’s, technology is constantly evolving around us. The cost of both mobile phones and data continues to plunge, people all around are now armed with connected devices.

In emerging markets, there is an increased importance placed on smartphones in peoples’ daily lives. It’s their primary gateway to the internet, their connection with family and friends, people abroad, and increasingly their main banking and finance tool.

Alan Mamedi, CEO & co-founder of Truecaller, said: “Close to a decade ago, we set out to solve what we thought was a simple problem – how do we figure out who these unknown numbers belong to that keeps calling us? Little did we know how big of a problem that actually was in all corners of the world.”

“It was so big, in fact, that Truecaller is pleased and excited to announce that we now have more than 100 million daily active users using our app for their daily communication. There are only a handful of mobile-only services that impact as many users each and every day and we are humbled to be able to join this exclusive group,” says Mamedi.

The proliferation of new and advanced technologies that are ever evolving, Truecaller has also come a long way since the day the company was founded. From simple beginnings as a Caller ID and spam blocking app, to a full fledge communications platform with calling, SMS’, Flash Messages and payment services.

“We could never have predicted that Truecaller would become an indispensable resource for women’s safety in many countries; or that it would be used for e-commerce and courier services around the globe to facilitate the difficult last mile of delivery; or allow more people to experience a data-only product in offline mode,” says Mamedi. “Truecaller is more than just an app on your phone, it has aided in bridging the digital divide between the urban and growing semi urban/rural markets in India; and has even enabled more African businesses to accept online payment.”

“We’re continuously working to make communications safer and efficient and the fact that we have so many users validates our mission. We’re excited to see what the next decade and 100 million users bring us. So to all millions of users who helped us get here we would like to say thank you,” Mamedi said.

Facebook data controversy: Mark Zuckerberg promises developers hardtime, reassures users

Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook shares an update on the Cambridge Analytica situation -- including the steps we've already taken and our next steps to address this important issue.

"We have a responsibility to protect your data, and if we can't then we don't deserve to serve you. I've been working to understand exactly what happened and how to make sure this doesn't happen again. The good news is that the most important actions to prevent this from happening again today we have already taken years ago. But we also made mistakes, there's more to do, and we need to step up and do it.
Here's a timeline of the events:
In 2007, we launched the Facebook Platform with the vision that more apps should be social. Your calendar should be able to show your friends' birthdays, your maps should show where your friends live, and your address book should show their pictures. To do this, we enabled people to log into apps and share who their friends were and some information about them.
In 2013, a Cambridge University researcher named Aleksandr Kogan created a personality quiz app. It was installed by around 300,000 people who shared their data as well as some of their friends' data. Given the way our platform worked at the time this meant Kogan was able to access tens of millions of their friends' data.
In 2014, to prevent abusive apps, we announced that we were changing the entire platform to dramatically limit the data apps could access. Most importantly, apps like Kogan's could no longer ask for data about a person's friends unless their friends had also authorized the app. We also required developers to get approval from us before they could request any sensitive data from people. These actions would prevent any app like Kogan's from being able to access so much data today.
In 2015, we learned from journalists at The Guardian that Kogan had shared data from his app with Cambridge Analytica. It is against our policies for developers to share data without people's consent, so we immediately banned Kogan's app from our platform, and demanded that Kogan and Cambridge Analytica formally certify that they had deleted all improperly acquired data. They provided these certifications.
Last week, we learned from The Guardian, The New York Times and Channel 4 that Cambridge Analytica may not have deleted the data as they had certified. We immediately banned them from using any of our services. Cambridge Analytica claims they have already deleted the data and has agreed to a forensic audit by a firm we hired to confirm this. We're also working with regulators as they investigate what happened.
This was a breach of trust between Kogan, Cambridge Analytica and Facebook. But it was also a breach of trust between Facebook and the people who share their data with us and expect us to protect it. We need to fix that.
In this case, we already took the most important steps a few years ago in 2014 to prevent bad actors from accessing people's information in this way. But there's more we need to do and I'll outline those steps here:
First, we will investigate all apps that had access to large amounts of information before we changed our platform to dramatically reduce data access in 2014, and we will conduct a full audit of any app with suspicious activity. We will ban any developer from our platform that does not agree to a thorough audit. And if we find developers that misused personally identifiable information, we will ban them and tell everyone affected by those apps. That includes people whose data Kogan misused here as well.
Second, we will restrict developers' data access even further to prevent other kinds of abuse. For example, we will remove developers' access to your data if you haven't used their app in 3 months. We will reduce the data you give an app when you sign in -- to only your name, profile photo, and email address. We'll require developers to not only get approval but also sign a contract in order to ask anyone for access to their posts or other private data. And we'll have more changes to share in the next few days.
Third, we want to make sure you understand which apps you've allowed to access your data. In the next month, we will show everyone a tool at the top of your News Feed with the apps you've used and an easy way to revoke those apps' permissions to your data. We already have a tool to do this in your privacy settings, and now we will put this tool at the top of your News Feed to make sure everyone sees it.
Beyond the steps we had already taken in 2014, I believe these are the next steps we must take to continue to secure our platform.
I started Facebook, and at the end of the day I'm responsible for what happens on our platform. I'm serious about doing what it takes to protect our community. While this specific issue involving Cambridge Analytica should no longer happen with new apps today, that doesn't change what happened in the past. We will learn from this experience to secure our platform further and make our community safer for everyone going forward.
I want to thank all of you who continue to believe in our mission and work to build this community together. I know it takes longer to fix all these issues than we'd like, but I promise you we'll work through this and build a better service over the long term.

Android users now enjoy a new version of Opera Mini browser

Android users globally now enjoy a new version of the Opera Mini Mobile browser which comes with redesigned interface, ITRealms can authoritatively report.
The upgraded version of Opera Mini for Android coincides with the announcement of Opera’s high growth targets for the Android platform on Tuesday, April 14, 2015,ITRealms gathered.
The chief executive officer (CEO) of Opera Software, Lars Boilesen confirmed this to  ITRealms.
“We aim to reach 275 million users on the Android platform by 2017, more than doubling today's user base of 130 million. This growth will further cement Opera's position as a dominant browser in fast-growing, emerging economies,” Boilesen said.

Android had over 81 per cent market share among smartphones operating systems in 2014, according to the International Data Corporation (IDC), the global market intelligence firm.

The new user interface, ITRealms learnt comes in the latest Opera Mini with some features including a simplified menu, overhauled speed dial, a private-browsing mode and options to customize the browser layout for more thumb-friendly surfing.

Also, the new Opera mini has a scalable interface with higher resolution for tablets and large phones, updates to discover news feed which provides more latest content across the web as well as a data counter to show daily progress on data savings, helping users keep data costs under control.

ITRealms also discovered that like previous Opera Mini versions, the Opera Mini 8 compresses webpages to as little as 10 per cent of their original size. This decrease in data traffic means users could get to their content faster, and could extend their data plans.

Hungarian Netizens prepare for protests over Internet tax

Over 30,000 internet citizens or users otherwise known as netizens in Hungary may be warming up for a protest over the government tax on the internet come Sunday, November 2, 2014, reports ITRealms.

As confirmed by Viktor Orban, the government has advanced plans to tax internet users from the beginning of 2015, according to a bill submitted to Hungary's parliament on last Tuesday.

ITRealms recalls that a few days ago, the Hungary said it would charge Internet Service Providers (ISPs) 150 forints (around 60 US cents or N99.39 in Nigeria) for each gig transferred. Hungary shifted 1,150PB in 2013, and 18PB in mobile data, according to figures from consultancy eNet and TheRegister.

Also, the government was reported as saying that the tax is no different to the levies it collects from telecos for long-distance calls, and there will be an upper limit to the download tithe, but would be set soon.
