Sex for SIM: Armed robber arrested - ITREALMS

An armed robber who invaded an apartment in a Lagos suburb of Ikotun, and carted away some mobile devices including laptops and mobile phones has been arrested after accepting a victim’s proposal to return her Subscriber Identification Module (SIM) card in exchange for sex, reports ITREALMS.

A SIM card, ITREALMS gathered is an integrated circuit (IC) intended to securely store an International Mobile Subscriber Identity (IMSI) number and its related key, which are used to identify and authenticate subscribers on mobile telephone devices such as mobile phones and laptops.


The armed robber, a 21 year-old young man identified as Tosin Lamidi, had reportedly robbed the apartment of one Ms Gift Nseobong at Number 8 Mutiatu Okesalu Street, Ikotun-Lagos over the weekend.

According to an eye-witness, Comrade Ikposa on his Facebook wall, Tosin stole laptops and phones from the apartment at gunpoint.

Ms Gift whose phone was among the mobile devices stolen in attempt to recover her SIM, called her number and Tosin picked up the call.

Consequently, a sex deal was reach in exchange for the return of the SIM card between the two of Gift and Tosin.

She was particular about the SIM due to some personal important document on it.

Following the deal accepted by Tosin Lamidi, they agreed to meet at Ikotun roundabout onward to a hotel.

“It was at the roundabout that he (Tosin) was arrested,” the eye-witness declared.

Investigations by ITREALMS revealed that Tosin Lamidi claimed to be student of Mass Communications at the Lagos State University.




ITREALMS recalled that technically, the actual physical card (SIM) is also known as a Universal Integrated Circuit Card (UICC) and comes as a piece of smart card usually made of the PolyVinyl Chloride (PVC).




Additionally, ITREALMS gathered that PVC is the world's third-most widely produced synthetic polymer of plastic after polyethylene and polypropylene, resulting in about 40 million tonnes of PVC being produced annually.




According to online encyclopedia, Wikipedia, PVC comes with embedded contacts and semiconductors, whereas the SIM remains its primary component.
