The workshop, with the theme: "Expected Official Roles and Responsibilities Towards Successful Implementation of 2024 CGS-SDGs in the state," was organised to aid the fast-tracking of the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals in the state.

The African Union Development Agency (AUDA-NEPAD) has hosted a two-day workshop on biotechnology, gene editing, gene drive and synthetic biology for the African Biosafety Communication Network, from 25-26 October 2022 in Accra, Ghana, reports ITREALMS.

“Dealing with complex domains like biotechnology and related emerging technologies is a big challenge, in particular when these technologies seem beyond the understanding of the layman. Paradigm Initiative strengthens lawmakers with inter-regional digital rights workshop - ITREALMS

As part of efforts at strengthen policymakers’ capacity to handle digital rights and related issues, Paradigm Initiative has hosted an Inter-regional Policy Workshop on Internet Rights from 7-8th October 2019 in Nairobi, Kenya, reports ITREALMS.

The workshop, which is targeted at Parliamentarians from East and Southern Africa, including representatives from the two Regional Economic Communities (RECs), is part of a series of interventions aimed at complementing existing capacity of policy makers in developing human rights respecting Internet legislation.

The workshop seeks to foster dialogue among the delegates, further enhance their capacities to address digital rights and offer them an informed awareness of issues, best practice and mechanisms that other countries utilise, which can be adapted for implementation in their respective jurisdictions.

Speaking on the development Honourable Thoko Tembo from the Parliament of Malawi noted that the expansion of Africa’s digital landscape means that the Internet is fast becoming a human right and affects a lot more people. “As a policy maker, I am extremely excited to attend this workshop. The knowledge and awareness obtained will help formulate the right policy that will ensure citizens enjoy digital rights, he said."

The seminar underscores the critical role of Parliamentarians across the globe in the Internet Governance multi-stakeholder ecosystem and an equally critical role in formulation of Internet policies, regulation and legislation.

According to Google Policy Fellow for East Africa, Rebecca Ryakitimbo, “this workshop will help set precedence for regional frameworks around digital rights and freedom bearing in mind the trends and similarities in these countries”.

The convening is expected to culminate into the development of an Inter-regional Advocacy Framework for addressing digital rights and freedoms.

Meanwhile,Bulanda Nkhowani- Google Policy Fellow for Southern Africa applauded the initiative, “this is timely for the two regions faced with similar threats on internet freedom in form of internet taxes, repressive cyber laws and massive detentions of activists and internet users in countries like Uganda, Zambia, Malawi and Tanzania”.

Participants will leave with deepened and up-to-date insights on the status of digital rights in the two regions and in Africa, as well as empowered with the requisite tools to establish human rights-based cyber laws and ultimately contribute to establishing coordinated best practice in Internet public policy on the continent.

U.S. Consulate supports robotics workshop for 303 teachers, 187 students - ITREALMS

The office of the United States Consulate General in collaboration with RoboRave International, a U.S.-based tech academy, has just concluded a week-long robotics workshop for some 303 teachers and 187 students, reports ITREALMS.

The participating students and teachers were from 29 public and private schools across Lagos, Ogun, and Edo states as well as the Federal Capital Territory.

RoboRAVE International Director of Global Programs Russ Fisher-Ives and RoboRAVE North America Director Brian Montoya facilitated the series of workshops in Benin, Lagos, and Abuja from October 21-27. 

Throughout the training, students were taught the basics of programming a robot to perform various tasks while teachers learned various aspects of implementing an integrated approach to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education.

Speaking at the grand finale of the workshop held at the Zone Tech Park in Gbagada, Lagos, U.S. Consulate Public Affairs Officer, Mr. Russell Brooks, explained that the workshop was designed to stimulate the interest of the participating students in math and science, as well as careers in the STEM fields.

Mr. Brooks discussed the importance of STEM education to Nigeria’s future prosperity and economic competitiveness. According to him, developing robotics skills can place students on a track to future careers in computer science and artificial intelligence.

“The U.S. Mission in Nigeria is committed to supporting programs that provide youth with access to quality technological learning opportunities. We are also passionate about building teacher confidence and capabilities in the areas of robotics and STEM,” Brooks said.

The robotics workshop supports the U.S. Mission’s goal of promoting STEM education in Nigeria as a driver of sustainable economic growth.

Paradigm Initiative to host digital rights workshop @Zambia - ITREALMS

Paradigm Initiative has concluded plans to host the Southern African Digital Rights Workshop in Lusaka, Zambia, reports ITREALMS.

The interactive workshop, ITREALMS gathered, will take place over the course of two days from the 18th to 19th of October 2018, introducing participants to the basic concepts of Digital Rights. This is according to a statement signed by the social enterprise's communications officer, Sodiq Alabi.

According to Wathagi Ndungu, Paradigm Initiative's Google Policy for East and Southern Africa, "the purpose of the workshop is to create an empowered Civil Society digital rights community for Southern Africa that is able to defend and advocate for digital rights in the region, as part of a Pan-African coalition."

"The media will also be trained to competently report on digital rights issues in the region. The end goal of the workshop is to ensure that legislators, after interacting with trained Civil Society Organizations and media that understand and follow current trends in digital rights they will be able to analyse and articulate digital rights issues in their respective countries thus improving the quality of parliamentary debates on the issues," Ndungu added.

Representatives from government and law enforcement will gain insights and thus employ them when making policy. They will be able to formulate policy from an informed position.

In attendance will be representatives from Civil Society, Government, Private Sector, Media and Law Enforcement. They will be coming from Zimbabwe, Malawi, South Africa, Botswana, Namibia and the host country Zambia.

Speaking on the development, Paradigm Initiative's Director of Programs, Tope Ogundipe, saidm "during the workshop and after we will create a Southern African Digital Rights Strategy and come up with ways to empower more individuals in the Digital Rights sphere. This workshop is a significant step towards informing individuals in the Southern African region how they can influence Internet policy and avert further Digital Rights abuses in the region."

Reliance Infosystems partners Microsoft on fintech

ICANN to host first capacity building workshop for GAC members @UAE

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) to host the first capacity building workshop for the Governmental Advisory Committee (GAC) Middle East members and GAC newcomers, reports ITRealms.

The workshop organized by ICANN is in cooperation with the ICANN Governmental Advisory Committee (GAC) Under-served Regions Working Group.

ITRealms gathered the workshop would be held on 28 October, on the first day of ICANN’s 60th Public Meeting (ICANN60), in Abu Dhabi, United Arabic Emirates (UAE) with the support of the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) of the UAE.

This is the first capacity building workshop targeting GAC members in the Middle East.

ITRealms reports that ICANN President and CEO, Mr. Göran Marby, and GAC Chair, Mr. Thomas Schneider, are billed to present at the workshop along with executives, alongside the regional ICANN team, and community members.

The workshop will focus on raising awareness about ICANN policy making processes and assisting the GAC members and governments in the Middle East on how to effectively participate and contribute to ICANN. It will also introduce policy topics and working groups relevant to the work of the GAC members. The workshop will seek feedback from the participants on how ICANN can help them foster and boost their participation.

In addition, ITRealms reports that the workshop would cover wide a range of topics including: Introduction to ICANN and its role and work in the Middle East region, Role of ICANN in the global Internet Governance Ecosystem, Update on ICANN constituencies and cross community work at ICANN60.

The 2017 edition of the one-day PricewaterhouseCooper (PwC) Capability Enhancement Workshop for Journalists ended in Lagos with a line-up of subject matter experts dissecting various topics, reports ITRealms.

Led by a senior manager and Lead, Sustainability and Climate Change at PwC Nigeria, Mories Atoki, and Lead partner at BudgIT, Mr. Seun Onigbinde, whereas panelists included the publisher of BusinessDay, Mr. Frank Aigbogun, Publisher, CableNG, Mr. Simon Kolawole, and Wole Famurewa of CNBC Nigeria.

ITRealms reports that the presentations at the workshop included a session on “Tracking amd Reporting the SDGs” facilitated by Atoki, while Mr. Onigbinde, facilitated a session on “Using data to transform the news and provide insights."

In his opening remarks, the Country Senior Partner, PwC Nigeria, Mr. Uyi Akpata, noted that the annual workshop now in its fourth year with over 200 journalists benefiting from the training, is a major component of PwC’s Corporate Responsibility strategy.

“It was instituted in recognition of the very important role of the media in society and particularly, the role that the media in Nigeria has and continues to play in informing and educating the public,” he said.

Akpata also explained that PwC support for the media through this workshop and the media excellence award is in line with their purpose which is to build trust in society and solve important problems.

“It is a demonstration of our strong belief that for the Nigerian people to enjoy good governance, the media must perform its role optimally and professionally and this is reflected in the quality of reporting, in the capacity of individual journalists to carry out research and investigations, in the independence of editorial judgments, and in their ability to use technology as an enabler,” he assured.

Group laments lack of project measurement, plans workshop

A strategy-focused organisation, Development Measures, has concluded plans to hold a 3-day Strategy Development and Management for Results Workshop for Development professions in Nigeria, reports ITRealms.

Monitoring and Evaluation expert and President, Development Measures, Nigeria, Emmanuel Uche, who disclosed this to newsmen in Abuja, Monday, said the organization is: “delivering this Strategy, Monitoring and Evaluation Training as part of its Institutional strengthening capacity building series.”

ISOC, IXPN collaborate on enhancing Internet Exchange Points

The Internet Society (ISOC) and Internet eXchange Point in Nigeria (IXPN) recently collaborated on a workshop with focus on enhancing Internet Exchange Points in the country, reports ITRealms.

Disclosing this to ITRealms, the chief executive officer of IXPN, Mr. Muhammed Rudman said the five-day workshop is in line with the Internet Society (ISOC) Internet Exchange, Access, and Infrastructure System Project.

The workshop with the theme “Internet Routing Technologies and IXP interconnection” he said was held between November 16 and 20, 2015 to increase local technical capacity and use of the Internet exchange points (IXPs) in the country.

He also said the workshop is a follow-up to the Internet Society’s access, connectivity and infrastructure work to support the growth of IXPs across Africa. 

ISOC objectives for Africa, he said in a press statement signed by Betel Hailu, are to work with local Internet partners to realize Africa’s potential to deliver locally 80 per cent of the continents Internet content.  

“In partnership with local stakeholders, we support capacity building efforts and extend technical assistance to facilitate IXP development, domestic and cross-border interconnection in Africa. As countries establish and utilize their IXPs, both domestic and cross-border Internet traffic will be routed locally, creating downward pressure on costs, increasing quality of service, and as a result stimulating economic growth and distribution of local Internet content,” Hailu said.

ITRealms gathered that over 24 network engineers from the telecom companies, academics, and Internet Service Providers (ISPs) attended the workshop, designed to teach the technical skills needed to maximize their benefits from domestic and cross-border interconnections at IXPs. 

Equally, it is expected that participants will increase requisite local technical expertise to support interconnections at the IXP. Hence the workshop incorporated hands-on training for the participants to familiarize themselves with interconnection technologies and techniques that increase the efficiency of network interconnections and traffic exchanged at the IXP.

25 countries storm Contonou for ICANN domain names, trademarks workshop

A two-day workshop on domain names, trademarks and rights protection on the continent ends at the Hotel Novotel Orisha Cotonou with 25 African countries participating, ITRealms reports.

Also, ITRealms reports that over 80 attendees came from the 25 participating African countries.

The workshop put together by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, ITRealms gathered was opened by Komi Koutche, the Beninese, Minister for Information and Communications Technology in the company of Mr. David Olive, ICANN’s Vice President for Policy Development Support.

Additionally, ITRealms gathered that participants cut across the country code Top Level Domain  (ccTLD) managers, registrars, practitioners of intellectual property rights, rights protection specialists to name a few and had the opportunity to share best practices for the protection of users' rights on the continent.

According to Olive, “Generic Top-Level Domains (gTLDs) will have a profound impact on brand owners, regional industry and consumers,” stressing that it is important that ICANN supports Africa in its strategy to promote Internet industry.

He also revealed to ITRealms that the workshop affords ccTLD managers and registrars to be better equipped for the rapid implementation of measures for the security, management and promotion of ccTLDs.

“This is a critical part in enabling the Domain Name industry to flourish in African digital economy,” he said.

Pierre Dandjinou , the Vice President of ICANN for Africa, disclosed to ITRealms that the protection of rights is hardly addressed in Africa and mechanisms for protection of existing rights are not very popularized on the continent hence the workshop,

“As many African countries having started to organize their structures of intellectual property rights, it may be necessary to better inform them on the relationship between domain names, trademarks and the mechanisms for conflict resolution,“ Dandjinou said.
