UNICEF, UNFPA, UN Women urge action to end female mutilation - ITREALMS

Mary Oloiparuni was 13 when she was mutilated. Restrained in a doorway early one morning in her home, she was cut, bled profusely and experienced agonizing pain. The scarring she endured then continues to cause her pain today, 19 years later. It has made giving birth to each of her five children an excruciating and harrowing experience.

                                                                                                                                  

Mary is not alone. At least 200 million girls and women alive today have had their genitals mutilated – suffering one of the most inhuman acts of gender-based violence in the world.

On the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation, we reaffirm our commitment to end this violation of human rights, so that the tens of millions of girls who are still at risk of being mutilated by 2030 do not experience the same suffering as Mary.

A joint statement available to ITREALMS by Dr. Natalia Kanem, Executive Director, UNFPA, Henrietta H. Fore, Executive Director, UNICEF and Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, Executive Director, UN Women, they noted that this effort is especially critical because female genital mutilation leads to long-term physical, psychological and social consequences.

"It violates women’s rights to sexual and reproductive health, physical integrity, non-discrimination and freedom from cruel or degrading treatment. It is also a violation of medical ethics: Female genital mutilation is never safe, no matter who carries it out or how clean the venue is," they decried.

Because female genital mutilation is a form of gender-based violence, we cannot address it in isolation from other forms of violence against women and girls, or other harmful practices such as early and forced marriages. To end female genital mutilation, we have to tackle the root causes of gender inequality and work for women’s social and economic empowerment.

In 2015, world leaders overwhelmingly backed the elimination of female genital mutilation as one of the targets in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. This is an achievable goal, and we must act now to translate that political commitment into action.

At the national level, we need new policies and legislation protecting the rights of girls and women to live free from violence and discrimination. Governments in countries where female genital mutilation is prevalent should also develop national action plans to end the practice. To be effective, their plans must include budget lines dedicated to comprehensive sexual and reproductive health, education, social welfare and legal services.

At the regional level, we need institutions and economic communities to work together, preventing the movement of girls and women across borders when the purpose is to get them into countries with less restrictive female genital mutilation laws.

Locally, we need religious leaders to strike down myths that female genital mutilation has a basis in religion. Because societal pressures often drive the practice, individuals and families need more information about the benefits of abandoning it.

Public pledges to abandon female genital mutilation – particularly pledges by entire communities – are an effective model of collective commitment. But public pledges must be paired with comprehensive strategies for challenging the social norms, practices and behaviours that condone female genital mutilation. Testimonials by survivors like Mary also help to build understanding of the practice’s grim reality and long-lasting impact on women’s lives. Advocacy campaigns and social media can amplify the message that ending female genital mutilation saves and improves lives.

Thanks to the collective action of governments, civil society, communities and individuals, female genital mutilation is in decline. But we are not aiming for fewer cases of this practice. We are insisting on zero.

U.S. wants more investment in Girl-Child education, female political participation - ITREALMS

The United States Consul-General for Nigeria, Mr. F. John Bray has called for increased investment in the education of the girl-child and greater political participation by women in Nigeria, reports ITREALMS.

In his keynote on the second day of the 17th Annual Conference of Women in Management, Business and Public Service (WIMBIZ), in Lagos at the weekend, Consul General Bray encouraged the women leaders to continue working to promote gender equality in Nigeria.

Dwelling on the topic “Unstoppable You: Reinvent & Reinvigorate” at the event attended by leading women from both the private and public sectors.

 “Nigeria cannot achieve its dreams of a prosperous and inclusive society without reinventing its approach to how it is treating the overwhelming majority of the women and girls that live in this country …  It may be up to you to change the tenor of the national discourse and prod Nigeria to place education and health, and the status of women and girls higher on the national agenda.”

Bray lamented that Nigeria is reportedly home to the largest number of out of school children in the world, many of them girls.

“If Nigeria properly invested in the education of women and girls, how many more Amina Mohammeds will represent this country on the world stage?  If more women and girls are given equal opportunities, how many more Chimamanda Ngozi Adichies will be able to tell stories that enthrall the world?” Consul General Bray asked.

Noting that removing the barriers to women's full economic participation is key to an inclusive and prosperous Nigeria, he challenged the conference participants to press for greater involvement by women in the nation’s politics.

Bray said the current political order in Nigeria does not offer enough opportunities for women. He added that low female participation in politics must change if issues of concern to women are to rise in prominence and draw the interest and resources that they deserve.

 “WIMBIZ and various Nigerian women’s organizations can help Nigeria decide the course of its future and chart a course that will lead to a more democratic and prosperous nation. You can start by working to ensure that the 2019 elections are free, fair, credible, and peaceful. That would be a great start!” Consul General Bray said.

Glo gets thumbdown for sacking 90 married female staff

Glo Mobile has been receiving thumbdown for allegedly sacking over 90 female married staff on the occasion of 2018 International Women Day, reports ITRealms.

Latest in giving Glo knocks and thumbdown is the Public Interest Litigation Initiative (PILI), a non-governmental organization, which said they were hugely pained by Glo sack of these female employees.

A press statement made available to ITRealms in Abuja by the Executive Director, PILI, Prof Adesoji Adesugba, the NGO totally condemned Glo action in its entirety and manifestation, insisting Glo has adversely violated the rights of women as encapsulated in the United Nations (UN) Charter against discrimination on any basis, which Nigeria is also a signatory.

Also, the group said it was annoying to note that a global brand like Globacom “which ought to have stood firmly against such illicit acts by inculcating global best practices in her modus operandi has gotten itself contaminated in an avoidable error of this proportion.”

While recalling that preliminary investigation on the subject matter has thrown up several issues, Prof. Adesugba wondered why Glo could choose to deliberately undermine the letters of Article 30 of the United Nations Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) which explicitly defined what amounts to discrimination against women.

The statement reads in part: “It is disheartening to hear that these particular set of female staff who have worked very hard to take the company to the height it has attained today could be treated in a needlessly reckless manner. We at PILI find this unacceptable and have taken a legal action to challenge this glitch.

“It is going to be a legal fight to the finish until and unless very urgent and responsible steps are taken by Globacom to restate them back to their various positions with full benefits in addition to paying damages to them for distorting their career path or progress.

“Annoyingly, this unwarranted decision was taken when the International Women’s Day celebration for 2018 was around the corner. This is not only a violation of extant laws governing labour in Nigeria but also a complete deviation from global best practices where women who aspire to reach the zenith of their chosen careers are not only given a chance to excel but also supported to do so.

“The reasons adduced as accounting for their sack in the company is grossly insufficient. Globacom is tactically saying expertise and competence can be easily slaughtered. Let me remind Globacom that the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Number 5 is also aimed at comprehensively achieving gender equality and empowerment of women and girls all over the world.”

As said by him, the time has come for all men of goodwill to rally round women in order to ensure that they successfully overcome any impediments on their way to becoming fully empowered economically, politically and socially.

“We have to start the process of ensuring that, no worker in Nigeria, particularly those affected by this action are not used and dumped after contributing immensely in training, mentoring and track record of service to their employers,” Adesugba submitted.

FRSC to prosecute driver who sped-off with female personnel

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has reacted to the video making a round on social media describing it as a one-sided story intended to manipulate the public sympathy and expressed determination to prosecute the driver sped away with a female personnel at the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja, reports ITRealms.

Confirming this to ITRealms, the Corp Marshal, Dr. Boboye Oyeyemi described as manipulated video of the incident which has been trending on social media platforms.

The Corps, he told ITRealms, is determined to follow through with the suspect's prosecution as a deterrent.

According to him, on Wednesday last week, July 12 to be precise, at FCT, the offender was flagged down for routine checks and at the point when his car was to be impounded due running foul with the traffic laws, a female staff was attached to the offender to accompany the vehicle to a nearby FRSC office for further processes as demanded by the law.

“The driver sped away with the female staff,” he declared, adding that a patrol team obviously concerned about the motive, applied force to rescue the female operative.

“The manipulated video which the suspect released afterwards only told one side of the story,” he decried.

Benue boys, Plateau girls emerge in U-17 Airtel Rising Stars

The season five of the Under-17 Airtel Rising Stars (ARS) football tournament at the weekend saw the male team from Benue State and female counterpart from Plateau State emerging winners of the Abuja Regional Championship, reports ITRealms.

This means that both teams which emerged at the Old Parade Ground in Abuja, ITRealms reports would now represent the North Region at the national finals holding in Lagos.

The Abuja tournament which kicked off on Thursday 30^th of July came to a successful conclusion on Saturday 1^st August at the Old Parade Ground, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.

In the final matches of both male and female categories, the Benue boys defeated their Nasarawa counterparts by 3 goals to nil, while the Plateau State girls beat their Kaduna counterparts 7 – 6 through penalties after a gruelling encounter that ended goalless.

In the third place matches, the boys from Kaduna defeated team FCT by 2 goals to 1, whilst the Abuja girls clinched the third place medals at a match that was also decided by penalties where they beat the girls from Kano by 4 goals to 1.  

A huge crowd of soccer loving youths defied the early morning showers to be at the venue to watch the final matches. The highly elated winners celebrated joyously as the trophies were presented to them by Airtel’s Regional Operations Director, North, Wole Abu who was in company of the Zonal Business Manager, North Central, Lynda Umeh; Regional Trade Marketing Manager, North, Nasihu Abdulmajid and ex-Super Eagles International and technical adviser in the ARS 5, Garba Lawal.

Speaking shortly after presenting the medals and trophies to the teams, Mr. Abu noted that the Telco remains committed to its laudable contribution towards the development of youths and sport in Nigeria and has been consistent in supporting football talents to achieve their potentials.

“From Season 1 to the current Season 5, we have seen improvement in terms of organisation and officiating. Airtel Nigeria is convinced that this platform will continue to discover and produce football talents that will move on to professional football as we have seen from the testimonies of those that have been discovered. Airtel is interested in the success of youths in Nigeria,” he noted.  

Coach of the Benue State Team, Ernest Patrick, was full of delight at the victory of his team and expressed readiness to represent the North in the National Finals. “We feel proud and excited to have seen the result of our efforts. We worked hard but we will also work on our lapses. We played a good game and the other teams played well too. By God’s grace we will lift the trophy in Lagos. More is expected of us as we move to the National finals. We hope to make impact and win the competition.”

Salisu Nakande, Coach of the Plateau girls, who was a member of the Golden Eaglets squad to China ’85, said the victory at the regional championship is not new to him, but the task is for the team to lift the trophy at the national finals in Lagos.

“I am used to the terrain and I am not new to the National Finals. In the Airtel Rising Star Season 4, my boys made it to the finals but we lost to Kwara State. This time around, I foresee a very strong final and we will work hard to put in our best so we can win the National Finals in Lagos,” he said.

Meanwhile, four outstanding players were identified and honoured during the Abuja Regional Finals.

Rita Sunday, who plays for Plateau, won the Female Highest Goals Scorer award with a total of 6 goals, while Stephen Friday of Team Abuja won the Male Highest Goals Scorer award with total of 3 goals. The female Most Valuable Player award went to the skilful 15 year old Chinwe Akabike of Kaduna girls, while the male Most Valuable Player award went to Sanusi Usman,16, who plays for Benue State.

The next leg of the Regional Championship will be played in Port Harcourt at Liberation Stadium, PH between the 6^th and 8^th August. Thereafter, Lagos will host the last leg of regional championship at Legacy Pitch, National Stadium, Surulere, starting from 14^th to 16^th of August 2015.
