Leading telecommunications firm MTN Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to closing the gender gap in the technology sector by announcing its headline support for the 2026 International Girls in ICT Day, reports ITREALMS.

The campaign, organized by eBusiness Life Communication Limited, is set for June 25, 2026, at the Lagos Oriental Hotel. This year's event follows the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) mandate to encourage young women to pursue careers in a field historically dominated by men. The 2026 theme is “AI For Development: Girls Shaping The Digital Future.”

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Lagos State Council, celebrated a significant milestone as its Secretary, Mr. Tunde Olalere, was honored with the "Most Safety Conscious Media Champion of the Year" award by Tochlight Africa. reports ITREALMS.

The award ceremony, held at the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) in Ikeja, brought together friends, well-wishers, and a delegation from the NUJ Lagos State Council.

The first female editor of Champion Newspapers and avid journalist, Dr Ngozi Fidelia Anyaegbunam is dead, reports ITREALMS.

This was confirmed by the family in a press statement signed by her son, Rocky C. Agbese, noting that with gratitude to God for a life well spent, that Dr Ngozi Fidelia Anyaegbunam died after a brief illness.

2023: Youth must champion peace initiatives in Nigeria - ITREALMS

As the country prepares for the forthcoming general election 2023, the West Africa Network has called on the youth to shun violence and commit to building peace initiatives in communities across the country.

Considering how young people are used as perpetrators of violence, especially during elections, Patience Obaulo, head of Programs, WANEP Nigeria said their momentum can be redirected positively hence the need for peacebuilding and leadership training.

NUJ leads Champion staff to protest over unpaid 54 months salaries - ITREALMS

For unpaid 54 months salary arrears, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Lagos State Council on Friday, led former staff of Champion Newspapers to protest at Oriental Hotels, Victoria Island, Lagos, venue of 2020 Champion Newspapers Excellence Awards, reports ITREALMS.

The protest against the management of the Newspapers was led by the Council Chairman, Dr. Quasim Akinreti as well as the National Trustee of the Union, Mr. Sylva Okereke.

It was gathered that as the protest was going on, the management of Champion Newspapers threatened to arrest the Council chairman and his team of protesters, who were unperturbed over the threats by the police and management of the hotel. 

The protesters claimed that the Publisher of the Newspapers, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu and the Managing Director of the Company, Mrs. Nwadiuto Ihekanwa have been considered very insensitive to the plights of the past and present staff of the company, as over 25 staff have so far died due to non-payment of over four years salaries. 

It was gathered that despite selling the property of Champion Newspapers to Promasidor company for N2.5 billion, the heartless management refused to pay the over N100m owed to the staff. Protesters were seen carrying placards with inscriptions, "No Pay, no award! Madam, You're Wicked!! You have enslaved our members!!!

Others read in part, “Champion management you're heartless! Pay us our money" and “Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu enslaved our members.”

ITREALMS recalls that the 2020 Champion Newspapers Excellence Award was expected to attract at least two governors, including Governors Ayade and Ugwuanyi. Other recipients include, the CEO Airpeace, the GMD of Zenith Bank, Seplat and Globacom among others.

Cherie Blair Foundation hosts champion mentoring

The Cherie Blair Foundation for Women recently hosted special event to champion mentoring as a powerful tool for empowering women entrepreneurs in developing and emerging economies, reports ITRealms.

This, ITRealms gathered drew on findings from an evaluation of its Mentoring Women in Business Programme.

According to the Chief executive officer (CEO), Cherie Blair Foundation for Women,  Sevi Simavi, the research showed that women entrepreneurs in developing and emerging economies face a number of barriers to establishing and growing successful businesses.

These barriers, she outlined to include educational inequalities, inability to access networks, a lack of access to capital and a lack of role models.

“Mentoring can play a vital role in breaking down these barriers and empowering women to gain the skills and confidence they need to succeed,” she said.

ITRealms recalls that Simavi was quoted as saying that to mark this year's International Women's Day, people across the world are being asked to make a 'Pledge for Parity'.

“In my view, there is no better time to make such a commitment,” she declared, adding that the World Economic Forum estimates that it will take until 2133 for men and women to gain economy parity.

She pointed out that in order to close this gap sooner, hence the need to start now.

Stressing that whether as an individual or an organisation, everyone has the power to take concrete action to advance gender equality - from ensuring that women are given equal opportunities to progress in the workplace to challenging own internal biases.
