The Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB) has cemented its status as a champion of digital transformation in public service, winning the Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council (PEBEC) Transparency and Efficiency Champion Award for the fourth consecutive year, reports ITREALMS. 

The Board topped the national Ease of Doing Business rankings in 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2025.

In recent years, the telecommunications landscape in Nigeria has witnessed exponential growth, with an increasing number of users relying on data services for communication and connectivity. Data service has become a tremendously successful market segment for telcos.

In Q3 2023, Nigeria's top mobile network operators, MTN and Airtel, collectively generated N403.2 billion from data services. MTN, the country's largest telecom operator, saw a 38.9 per cent increase, reaching N279.5 billion in data revenue compared to N201.1 billion in the same period the previous year. Airtel Nigeria experienced a 29.3 per cent growth, reporting N123.7 billion in data subscriptions for the quarter ending September 2023. Both telecom giants attribute this surge to heightened data consumption by their customers.

As part of a coordinated effort to ease the circulation of banknotes of various denominations, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has confirmed the evacuation of banknotes from its vaults to commercial banks across the country, reports ITREALMS.

The CBN has also directed all commercial banks to open for operation on Saturdays and Sundays.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has appealed to the leadership of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) to ensure supply of petroleum products to facilitate the movement of of men and materials during the election days for the 2023 general elections, reports ITREALMS.

Making this appeal on Tuesday at joint management meeting with the leadership of Nigerian National Petroleum Company, the Chairman of INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, said that it has become necessary to mobilise every national institution to give Nigerians a pleasant experience on the 2023 election days.

Ease of doing business: Amended tax order inimical to telecom, imposes 38 levies – ALTON

The Association of Licensed Telecommunication Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) has expressed concerned over the difficulties in doing business in the sector imposed by the Amended Taxes & Levies Order, 2015, reports ITRealms.

The order, ITRealms gathered imposed not less than 38 taxes and levies on telecom sector, which ALTON described as institutionalizing the multiplicity of taxes across different tiers of government.

Lamenting these difficulties to ITRealms, the ALTON chairman, Engr. Gbenga Adebayo, said the Amended Order failed to fix the taxable rate resulting in the imposition of arbitrary levies and charges at the State Government levels.

“The industry is also burdened with enactment of laws at the State Government levels to legitimate spurious levies and charges on our members which negates the ease of doing business in Nigeria,” he told ITRealms.

Particularly, ALTON noted that item 3 (b) of the Amended Schedule to the Taxes and Levies (Approved List for Collection) Act introduced new levies and taxes under items 12 – 25. Most of these taxes and levies were hitherto contested by our members on the grounds that they were not applicable to telecommunications operations justified by the previous Taxes and Levies (Approved List for Collection) Act 1998.

For ALTON, “It is disturbing that the entire instrument has given the State Governments authorization to coerce and disrupt the operations of our members in order to compel the payment of sundry levies, charges and taxes.  Rather than Amended Order addressing the issue of multiple taxation; it on the contrary increased the tax burden of our members and adversely impacted the ease of doing businesses in Nigeria.”

Further, ALTON pleaded for the intervention of the Honourable Minister of Finance, Mrs Kemi Adeosun, to review the Amended Taxes and Levies Order 2015, which has been adjudged to be inimical to the normal operations of telecommunication operations, stressing that telecommunications infrastructure deserved a presidential executive order at this time of the nation’s growth.

PMB promises ease of doing business in Nigeria, eyes top 100 economies by 2019

President Muhammadu Buhari has promised the international community of ease of doing business in Nigeria, just as the country will be among top 100 nations in the next three years, reports ITRealms.

Speaking in Nairobi, Kenya on Sunday, President Muhammadu Buhari said, Nigeria will be one of the most attractive and easiest places of doing business in the world by year 2019.

Buhari who made this disclosure while in a session on "Dialogue with the Private Sector" at the sixth Tokyo International Conference for African Development (TICAD VI), said his administration is implementing policies and measures to create right and enabling environment for business and investors in Nigeria.

ITRealms recalls that Nigeria is currently ranked 169 out of 189 countries by the World Bank, according to the Bank's 2016 Ease of Doing Business report.

The session attended by several African leaders, ITRealms gathered included Japan Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and international business executives, Buhari told participants that his administration’s vision and objective is to make Nigeria one of the top investment destinations in the world, within the shortest possible time.

“We believe government has a particular responsibility to create right and attractive environment for businesses and economic activities to thrive. In furtherance of this vision, we have launched the Presidential Enabling Environment Council (PEEC) and Inter-Ministerial Council to oversee the efforts of government to remove various bottlenecks that stifle businesses and economic activities and thereby create economic activities and the right enabling environment and investment climate in Nigeria.

According to the Senior Special Adviser (SSA) to the President on Media & Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu in a press statement made available to ITRealms, the secretariat of PEEC, Buhari was quoted as sayings, will include strong private sector representation that would be led by experienced business professionals from the private sector.

‘‘We are committed to moving up the ranking of the World Bank’s ease of doing business index 20 places in first year and be in the top 100 within the next 3 years,’’ the President said.
