The Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) and Association of Telecommunication Companies of Nigeria (ATCON), have cried out to the Federal Government (FG) to quickly address their challenges before it gets out of hand completely, reports ITREALMS.

ALTON and ATCON represent the Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) and telecommunications companies in Nigeria, as they called upon the government to take decisive action in addressing the numerous challenges confronting the telecommunications industry.

A joint statement available to ITREALMS endorsed by the ALTON chairman, Engr. Gbenga Adebayo and ATCON president, Engr. Tony Izuagbe Emoekpere, they underscored the urgent need for collaborative efforts between the public and private sectors to overcome obstacles hindering the sector's growth and development.

They outlined some of these challenges to include but not limited to infrastructure deficits, cost-reflective tariff of services, protection of assets and network infrastructure, as well as the regulatory independence, among others.

On infrastructure deficits the two associations noted that their members still lack access to essential telecommunication services due to a myriad of challenges, including multiple taxation and regulations and prohibitive Right of Way (RoW) charges, inadequate electric power supply and vandalism of telecommunications infrastructure.

They pointed out that on ‘Protection of Assets and Network Infrastructure’ it has become imperative to advocate for legislation that designates telecommunications infrastructure as Critical National Infrastructure (CNI), expressing deep concern over the escalating security threats facing telecommunications infrastructure in Nigeria.

“Telecommunications infrastructure undisputedly plays a pivotal role in Nigeria's national security and socioeconomic growth, especially as the country currently contends with multiple security challenges that require urgent and immediate actions in response to these threats. Attacks on cell towers, fibre optic cables, and other critical assets disrupt telecommunications services and result in significant financial losses for operators,” they declared.

Urging the federal government to prioritize the security of telecommunications infrastructure and collaborate with law enforcement agencies to enhance protective measures and combat vandalism and sabotage effectively.

On the cost-reflective tariff of services, ALTON and ATCON reiterated that telecommunications infrastructure development requires substantial investments in network expansion, maintenance, and technology upgrades. Despite the adverse economic headwinds, the telecommunications industry remains the only industry yet to review its general service pricing framework upward in the last 11 years, primarily due to regulatory constraints.

“For a fully liberalized and deregulated sector, the current price control mechanism, which is not aligned with economic realities, threatens the industry's sustainability and can erode investors’ confidence. ATCON and ALTON call upon the government to facilitate a constructive dialogue with industry stakeholders to address pricing challenges and establish a framework that balances consumers' affordability with operators' financial viability,” they demanded.

For the regulatory independence, ALTON and ATCON advocated for the sustenance of a culture of independence in the regulatory landscape to safeguard against undue influence and unwholesome incursion into the Nigerian Communications Commission’s (NCC) domain, which will inspire trust in the telecommunications sector and encourage investment.

Regulatory neutrality and independence, the said, are crucial to ensuring a thriving telecommunications sector. Statutory provisions lend credence to this notion, as a lack of an impartial regulator will lead to a failure to maintain public confidence in the objectivity and independence of its decisions.

The two industry associations, therefore, reaffirmed its commitment to working collaboratively with the government to address the challenges facing the telecommunications industry in Nigeria.

By fostering a conducive regulatory environment, prioritizing infrastructure development, enhancing security measures, and facilitating pricing adjustments, the government can unlock the full potential of Nigeria's telecommunications sector, driving economic growth and societal development.

NIN-SIM policy: FG bars outgoing calls on unlinked lines - ITREALMS

The Federal Government (FG) has directed telecommunications operators in the country to bar outgoing calls on unlinked lines from April 4, 2022, reports ITREALMS.

According to the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, the President, General Muhammadu Buhari, retired, has approved the implementation of the policy with effect from Monday, 4th of April, 2022.

Covid-19 lockdown: ATCON seeks free movement for telco's technical staff

ITREALMS: 

The Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON) has requested that the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to initiate the process of National Right of passage for all technical staff of telecommunications companies in the event of foreseeable lockdown, reports ITREALMS.

ATCON through its Executive Secretary, Mr. Ajibola Olude noted this has become imperative because either the Federal Government or the State Government in an attempt to curb the spread of Coronavirus outbreak in the country.

"This request is made because of the essential nature of telecommunications infrastructures in managing the entire situation and the need for maintenance and repairs that may arise during the possible lockdown," he said.

ATCON, he said, counts on NCC to expedite action in this regard while they appreciated the Commission for being proactive and attentive.

"We also urge all our teeming members and their staff to comply with all the guidelines stipulated by the Federal Ministry of Health and all relevant authorities at State levels," ATCON Executive Secretary said.

ATCON to host Pantami in Abuja - ITREALMS

ITREALMS:

The Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON) has concluded plans to host the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr. Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami to what it called ‘special reception’ reports ITREALMS.

Disclosing this, the Executive Secretary, ATCON, Ajibola Olude, said that President ATCON, Mr Olusola Teniola, would lead the special and high-powered reception slated for Thursday, December 12, 2019 at the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja.

He said that among the objectives of the event would be to formally introduce the Honourable Minister of Communications to the captains of the industry.

In addition, he said, the reception would give the industry the opportunity to meet with him and share some of the challenges that are impacting negatively on the telecom industry in Nigeria and to offer the Minister the opportunity to share his plans for the industry with the relevant stake holders.

ATCON says Glo is agent of transformation - ITREALMS

Globacom has been described as an agent of transformation by the leadership of the Association of Telecom Companies of Nigeria (ATCON), for its efforts on revolutions in the Nigerian telecoms sector, reports ITRealms.

Globacom and its chairman, Dr. Mike Adenuga Jr. were given unique prominence in a list of 100 heroes of Nigeria’s telecom in a new publication by the Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON).

The book was formally unveiled in Lagos on Friday at the Oriental Hotel, Lekki.

The launch of the publication which was chaired by Dr. Ernest Ndukwe, former Executive Vice Chairman, Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), also has in attendance, Alhaji Adebayo Shittu, Minister of Communications, who was the Special Guest of Honour.

The publication noted that Globacom had pioneered a series of innovations that have helped to transform the nation’s telecommunications sector extensively, adding that one of the most impactful feats performed by Globacom was the introduction of per second billing (PSB) in Nigeria at inception.

PSB made it possible for Nigerians to get unprecedented value for money by paying only for the exact time spent on calls.

It also added that Globacom facilitated telephone penetration nationwide through hundred percent reduction of GSM SIM price from N20,000 to N200 and crashing of call tariff from N50 to 5kobo.

In addition, the publication also listed several products pioneered by Globacom. They included Blackberry, vehicle tracking, mobile internet, mobile banking, multimedia messaging service (MMS), in-flight roaming services, voice SMS, Magic Plus and Text2email.

Also noted was Globacom‘s Glo 1,the first wholly-owned submarine cable, a high capacity  optic fibre cable which brings direct connectivity between West Africa, the UK and the rest of the world. The 9,800 km-long cable which provides excess bandwidth to all the cities connected to it ensures the availability of bandwidth to enterprise customers in West Africa and beyond.

In continuation of Globacom’s giant strides in the nation’s telecoms industry, it recently laid foundation of Glo 2 sub marine cable, another landmark which on completion will be the first submarine cable in Nigeria to terminate outside Lagos, thus providing enough bandwidth to communities in the southern part of the country, especially the oil platforms.

ATCON shops for 14-NEC members, plans 2018 AGM

The Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON) is now shopping for responsible 14 members of the entity to form the National Executive Council (NEC) from April 2018, reports ITRealms.

This is coming as ATCON also plans its Annual General Meeting (AGM) which would be an elective AGM where those 14 NEC members would be elected for the next two years.

The Executive Secretary at ATCON, Mr. Ajibola Olude, disclosed this to ITRealms, saying that as part of upholding the principle of transparency in the conduct of the forthcoming election into various positions in the NEC of the association, they beckon on all the CEOs and Directors of all our qualified member companies to take active part in the in Annual General Meeting (AGM) and Election into the National Executive Council (NEC).

He listed some of the positions to include, National President;  1st Vice President; 2nd Vice President;     National Secretary; Treasurer; Financial Secretary; National Publicity Secretary; Coordinator, Telephone Operators; Coordinator, Infrastructure Providers; Coordinator, Internet Services Providers;   Coordinator, Manufacturer's Representative; Coordinator, Equipment Dealers; Coordinator, Value Added Services; and Coordinator, Consulting.

To qualify for an election, ITRealms gathered that a candidate must be a Chief Executive Officer or at least a Director duly authorized or designated to represent his/her company by its management.

Nigeria still desire broadband capacity - Akinlola

The chief executive officer of Ntel, Mr. Ernest Akinlola has said that Nigeria is still very much desirous of broadband capacity, reports ITRealms.

Akinlola made this known at the 2017 Telecoms Executiveand Regulator Forum (TERF) at Oriental Hotel in Lagos, weekend, where he was represented by the Director, Regulatory and External Affairs at ntel, Mr. Osondu Nwokolo.

TERF is organised by the Association of Telecoms Companies of Nigeria (ATCON) and powered by InstinctWave.

He also noted that Nigeria is still in need of broadband capacity anchored on synergy by relevant stakeholders.

In addition, Nwokolo decried the fact that many at times, the decision affecting directly on the telecom sector is taken outside the industry without core industry players participating.

This, he said, does not argue well for the development and growth of the sector, especially in the telecom sector who are supposed to use the supposed infrastructure.

Equally, he said that spectrum trading is a good idea but content to drive it should be looked into as well.

He advised government to always include the Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and operators who deliver based on requisite OEMs tp the end user.

Further, he canvassed for the OEMs to be part of the beneficiaries of any tax incentive to afford to domestication of their factories in the country, thereby creating jobs for Nigerians and reducing the cost of acquiring such equipment or devices by end users.

Late Florence Seriki: Ardent promoter of Local Content says ATCON

The Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON) has described late founder of Omatek Computers, Mrs Florence Omatule Seriki as an ardent promotor of local content, reports ITRealms.

President of ATCON, Mr. Olusola Teniola in a tribute made available to ITRealms, said that the Nigerian Information and Communication Technology (ICT) space stopped breathing following the confirmation of the death of a woman who, he said, was passionately and tirelessly championed the drive for Nigerian Local Content in the person.

ATCON, Teniola said, received the news of her death as a rude surprise because she died when the entire Nigeria ICT Industry needed her sheer determination, business acumen and deep insight to drive the Nigerian Local Content to a positive conclusion.

“To us at the Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria, Engr. Mrs. Florence Omatule Seriki can be described as an entrepreneur per excellence, a patriot, a goal getter, a nationalist, an industrialist and an advocate of Nigerian local content,” he said.

Also, ATCON said its teeming members pray that the Almighty God grant the husband, the children and the entire family of late Engr. Mrs. Florence Omatule Seriki, the fortitude to bear this irrevocable loss and also grant her gentle soul eternal and peaceful rest.

“No doubt, she will be greatly missed,” Teniola said.

Step down CST bill now says ATCON, warns of chronic recession

The Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON) has called on those propagating the proposed Communications Service Tax (CST) bill to step it down, reports ITRealms.

The National President of ATCON, Mr. Olusola Teniola, made this call at the stakeholders forum on CST hosted by the Lagos Chambers of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) in Lagos on Wednesday, warning of ‘Chronic Recession.’

ATCON, he said believes any action that has the potential to derail the telecoms industry should be avoided by all tiers of government in Nigeria as the benefits of imposing a Communication Service Tax on telecoms subscribers are far lower than the revenue that it is going to create for the government.

ATCON insist that the proposed Communications Service Tax bill should be stepped down, arguing that doing otherwise, will speed-up the nation into ‘Chronic Recession.’

The high taxation, ATCON said, takes so much away from both the telecoms operators and subscribers that little or nothing is left to run the business.

The group also advised the Federal Government and any government tiers to boost the economy with increased government spending, outside which will result in stagflation thereby causing simultaneous high inflation and unemployment instead of prosperity.

Further, ATCON described the CST as lack of innovation, because the operators in the sectors are already faced with multiplicity of taxation, thus the group considers the proposed Communications Services Tax bill unnecessary and prohibitive.

“Imposition of Communications Services Tax bill could stifle innovation and creativity in the sector and this would automatically reverse the gains already made in the past decade,” ATCON president said, stressing that this might lead to increase in unemployment, decrease in revenue accruable to government which would heighten the county’s poverty level.

Teniola, new ATCON president promises to leverage on progress by Ajayi

The newly elected National President of the Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON), Mr. Olusola Teniola has promised to leverage the progress made by his predecessor, Mr. Lanre Ajayi, reports ITRealms.

Teniola in his acceptance speech gave this assurance, saying, he would continue in the good works of his predecessor and create new milestones to get the Association to grapple with emerging challenges in the industry.

He also said his regime is out to set new goals after due consultations for ATCON to enable them contribute significantly to the sustainable development of the telecommunications industry in Nigeria.

Teniola further said, he will adopt some steps to advance the work of the Association as to fast-tracked growth of the sector with a view to attracting more local and Foreign Direct Investments (FDI) into the Nigerian telecommunications market.

He outlined some five-point agenda including seeking strategic and purposeful engagements with all tiers of government, collaboration with the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) and other related Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).

In addition, Teniola said he will focus on protection of telecom investment in Nigeria, expand the scope of Communication Business Information Technology Exhibition and Conference (ComBIT Expo), redefine ATCONNews ThisWEEK newsletter and strengthen the secretariat via partnership.

ATCON would be open for strategic partnership from members and international communities.

ATCON elects Teniola president, gets new exco

The Managing Director of Internet Solutions Nigeria Limited, Mr. Olusola Teniola, has been elected new president of the Association of Telecommunication Companies of Nigeria (ATCON), reports ITRealms.

Teniola is leading other executive members including Engr. Tony Nwosu as first Vice President; Mr. David O. Roberts – 2nd Vice-President; Mr. Mike Ofili – National Secretary; Mrs. Aderonke Adeyegbe – Treasurer; Mr. Ike Nnamani – Coordinator Telephone Operations and Mr. Hyacinth Anucha – Coordinator Value Added Services.

ITRealms reports that the elections of the new exco were unopposed. 

In his acceptance speech, Mr. Teniola expressed appreciation for the successful and peaceful process and commended members for their support.

The immediate-past president, Engr. Lanre Ajayi has since handed over to the newly elected exco while the election followed the Annual General Meeting (AGM) held on Wednesday, May 11^th 2016 at Protea Hotel, Ikeja-Lagos.

ITRealms also reports that the inaugural meeting of the Telecoms industry Advisory Council was recently held and the council elected Alhaji Ibrahim Dasuki Nakande as the Chairman and Dr. Emmanuel Ekwuem, MD/CEO Teledom Group as Vice Chairman.

The outgoing President, ITRealms gathered was received a “National Outstanding Leadership” and “Commander of Nigerian Students” awards from the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS).

The former ATCON president, confirmed that membership of the association has grown to 115.

ITRealms further recalls that during the tenue of Ajayi, ATCON made some progress including hosting training on migration from IPV4 to IPV6, AFRINIC and was sponsored by the NCC, Internet Solutions, Medallion Communications to name a few.

Ajayi pointed out that the NEC of ATCON paid visits to some of its members, a total of about seven members which included Swift Network, Visafone, IHS, Airtel, Etisalat, Natcom among others.

However, the auditor’s report was read by Mr. Olusegun Abraham, from Abraham Shalom and Co, and was adopted.

Breaking News: GSMA, ALTON, ATCON, NATCOMS reject plan to tax e-Services in Nigeria

The Global System for Mobile Association (GSMA) has led a joint petition with the Association of Licensed Telecom Operators of Nigeria (ALTON), the Association of Telecoms Companies of Nigeria (ATCON) and National Association of Telecoms Subscribers (NATCOMS) against the proposed 9 per cent Communication Services Tax to be levied on charges payable by end-users of an electronic communication services in Nigeria, reports ITRealms.

Whereas GSMA is the industry association for mobile operators worldwide; ALTON, is for mobile operators of Nigeria; ATCON is for other associated telecom companies, and NATCOMS represents telecom consumers; jointly expressed dismay regarding the proposal, under consideration by the National Assembly, to establish a 9 per cent Communication Service Tax to be levied on charges payable by a user of an electronic communication service, for instance on Short Messaging Service (SMS), voice calls, MMS, data usage among others supplied by service providers.

In a strongly worded petition entitled ‘Objection to the Proposed Bill for the Establishment of a Tax on Electronic Communication Services in Nigeria’ addressed to the duo of Nigerian Finance Minister, Mrs Kemi Adeosun and her counterpart in Communications, Barr. Adebayo Shittu, the four telecommunications interest groups jointly rejected the proposed plan by the government to tax electronic communication services in the country.

A copy of the petition obtained by ITRealms, revealed that Mortimer Hope, Director Africa of GSMA, Engr. Gbenga Adebayo, chairman of ALTON, Engr. Lanre Ajayi, President of ATCON and Chief Adeolu Ogunbanjo, the national president of NATCOMS signed for their respective organisations.

ITRealms also reported that the petition which was copied to the Executive Vice Chairman, Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta, Senate President, Dr. Olubukola Saraki and the Speaker, House of Representatives, Hon. Dogara Yakubu among others, insisted that if this tax proposal is accomplished, it will not only increase prices for consumers, but stifles further investment in a market already battling multiple taxation.

“If introduced, such tax will result in an increase in prices for consumers, have adverse impacts on the adoption of mobile services and industry investment, and be counter-productive to the longer term national digital strategy objectives set by the Government of Nigeria,” the groups said.

According them, the bill tends to increase affordability barriers to the uptake of mobile services in the country.

They quoted a recent World Bank report which showed that a 10 per cent increase in mobile broadband penetration in low to middle income countries leads to a 1.38 per cent increase in Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth.

They also pointed out that as at March 30, 2016, Nigeria has 83 million people with access to mobile services, lamenting that over half of the population are still without a mobile connection, while affordability remains a key challenge to connect the unconnected, who are typically lower income population groups.

“Further taxation on electronic communication services will hit lower income consumers the most, who are already struggling due to the adverse economic situation and increased price pressure and for whom affordable access to information and communication technology is critical to their social and economic inclusion," the petitioners lamented, stressing that this will result in a double taxation for consumers who already pay Value Added Taxes (VAT) on telecommunications services.

The quadruple interest group argued that the proposal would also further increase the administrative cost burden on service providers to comply with numerous and complex tax regulations, already high compared to other countries of the world.

They, therefore, requested of both Ministers to urgently intervene to prevent the adoption of a new tax on electronic communications services to ensure that digital economy delivers its full potential in Nigeria and for Nigerians.

Senator Akpabio in car accident but stable

The former Executive Secretary of the Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON) and immediate past governor of Akwa-Ibom State, Dr. Godswill Akpabio was Monday morning involved in a motor accident, but said to be stable, reports ITRealms.

The accident which occurred along Airport Road at the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja was said to have left the former governor and currently the minority leader of Senate visibly shaken.

Following the accident, Akpabio accompanied by the wife were rushed to the National Hospital Abuja.

ITRealms report further has it that Akpabio has since been moved to a private ward in the hopsital and received in audience, the Governor of Akwa-Ibom State, Mr. Emmanuel Udom, who invariably flow into Abuja on hearing the news, which occurred before 10am on Monday.

However, a relative who pleaded non-mention of his name in the press said they are praying for Akpabio's quick recovery.

Nigeria must take advantage of 58m Internet users - Ajayi

The National President, Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON), Engr. Lanre Ajayi, has called for the optimization of the 58 million Internet users in the country, reports ITRealms.

He said even though Nigeria has more than 58 million active internet users which is more that the population of many African countries, stressing that with availability of infrastructure little content is being placed in there.

Currently, he said, what is seen online are a few e-commerce and government services,adding that every business should be online, declaring, “it is time to rise up for everybody to benefit from the internet.”

Ajayi, ITRealms gathered,made this known in  a goodwill message at the 2015 Edition of the annual Nigeria Internet Group (NIG) Conference and Exhibition whichhad the theme: “Internet Penetration, the Way Forward” and held at the Golden Gate Restaurant, Ikoyi, Lagos at the weekend.

He revealed that the evolution of NIG began in 1995 when the internet usage was still at its infancy and acknowledged the contributions of Engr. Olawale Ige, the then Minister of Communication for his contributions to the growth and development of NIG. He said that while the internet use in Nigeria has been upbeat, only 50 per cent of the job has just been concluded, calling on Nigerians to support NIG to achieve better internet penetration.

Engr.Ajayi pointed out that even though Nigeria internet awareness began late the coming on board of NIG brought great impetus to the development and promotion of the internet through advocacy, conferences and exhibitions, ITRealms learnt.

The immediate past NIG president, Engr Adebayo George Banjo,had earlier welcomed guests to the occasion stating that the Conference and Exhibition has been with the group since inception and called for support.
