ANEC 2018: Participants tasks INEC on credible election - ITREALMS

Rising from the 14th All Nigeria Editors Conference (ANEC 2018) participants have tasked the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), to remain independent in its practice by allowing citizens’ votes to count, reports ITREALMS.

ANEC, ITREALMS gathered, was hosted by the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE); made up of editors drawn from the print, electronic and online media across the country, which has three categories of membership, namely member, associate and fellow. NGE fellowship is earned and conferred and not applied for.

Participants at the 14^th edition held in Asaba, capital of Delta State, which ended at the weekend with the theme: "Credible Elections, Sustainable Democracy and the Nigerian media” in a 9-point communique observed that elections in Nigeria are not yet built on truth and urged INEC to ensure every vote counts during the 2019 elections.

“… As such, is cardinal to sustaining democracy,” part of the communique signed by both the president, Funke Egbemode and General- Secretary, Victoria Ibanga read in part.

It also challenged media practitioners to join in the mobilisation of Nigerians through unbiased reports to take collective responsibility in choosing leaders for the nation in the next general elections.

Equally, they expressed the need for Nigerian journalists to intensify efforts that will deepen democracy through sustained investigative, balance and analytical reportage.

Noting however, that the role of traditional media is being threatened by emergence of social media where balanced reporting, truth and accuracy are relegated, ANEC vowed to defend the truth through professional practice.

U.S., UK, Israel, South Africa participants line up for Nigeria Innovation Summit’17

The 2017 Nigeria Innovation Summit has advanced plans to host the annual event that brings together stakeholders from different sectors of Nigeria's economy to share ideas, trends, and opportunities around technology, innovation and entrepreneurship development in Nigeria, reports ITRealms.

The event scheduled to hold from September 7-8, 2017 at Sheraton Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos, Nigeria, the organisers said is attracting participants from the United States, United Kingdom, Israel, South Africa.

The Summit, according to Emerging Media the organizers, seeks to promote the need for Nigeria to become more innovative and apply innovation across all sectors to drive economic growth and sustainable development through emerging technologies, research & development, entrepreneurship, commercialization and investments as key drivers of an innovation ecosystem.

Speaking on the need for such Summit at this time, Mr. Kenneth Omeruo, MD/CEO, Emerging Media said, “Nigeria has the potentials to be a global economic power if we embrace and invest heavily in technology and innovation. It is instructive to note that Tunisia ranked 45^th and Morocco 50^th as the only African countries mentioned in the 2017 Bloomberg Innovation Index, which scores economies using factors including research and development intensity and the concentration of high-tech companies. South Korea, Sweden, Germany, Switzerland, Finland are the top five countries in that index. I think there is so much to learn from these countries. We should be implementing policies and investments that will encourage technology, innovation and entrepreneurship in Nigeria. The Nigeria Innovation Summit 2017 is offering a platform to engage stakeholders across all sectors on the need for such.”

He further emphasized the urgent need for Nigeria to invest in innovation, research and technology development, in order to become an innovation-driven nation and hence, improve in the Global Innovation Index ranking, attract foreign investments and boost the economy and life of the people.

The 2017 Summit under the theme ‘Transforming Nigeria’s Economy through Technology, Innovation and Entrepreneurship’, Mr. Omeruo said, provides opportunities for the 36 States, Ministries, Departments and Agencies of Government as well as Corporate bodies to showcase their agenda for digital transformation and  innovation agenda.   

He described the Summit as a platform that creates awareness on the need for Open Innovation in Nigeria where the government, industries across all sectors, academia, entrepreneurs collaborate to solve the problems of economic growth in Nigeria.

Also speaking, Mr. Tony Ajah, the Director of Nigeria Innovation Summit  said that the 2-day Summit will feature Keynote Speeches, Panel Discussions, Exhibitions, Workshops, and the Nigeria Innovation Awards. ICANN50 draws 3,343 participants, affirms multistakeholder model for Internet Governance

About 3,343 participants have registered on site at the Hilton Metropole venue of the fifty public meeting of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) in London, reports ITRealms.

President and CEO of ICANN, Mr. Fadi Chehadé, told ITRealms at the opening session on Monday that today is a great day for advancement of the multistakeholder model and its inclusivity.

He stressed that ICANN 50 is a milestone meeting for many reasons, not the least of which is the remarkable affirmations of the multistakeholder model it has brought and participation of 3,343 as this morning."

He also commended the Chinese government's adoption of the Domain Name System Security (DNSSEC) deployment and the expansion of the Internet Protocol (IPv6) protocol, which would ensure the expansion of the continued global expansion of the Internet.

He also called for the implementation of the NetMundial for the Internet community to make progress. While acknowledged the announcements by both Lebanon and China, "Both are a testament to the world's growing commitment to an inclusive multistakeholder Internet governance model, as is the remarkably high participation from so many people from every region of the world."

Equally speaking, Minister Lu Wei of China's Cyberspace Affairs Administration told attendees, noted that they all hold one single aspiration, that is, to improve the governance of the Internet. This is in line with ICANN's vision of 'One World, One Internet'.

He expressed appreciation and support for the advancements of the multistakeholder model that framed the NETmundial meeting in Sao Paulo, Brazil in April.

Minister Lu's comments followed the recognition of the newly formed Lebanon Internet Center or LINC.

Dr. Imad Hoballah, a member of the LINC Board, said, "The multistakeholder approach draws its strength from the ability to bring together diverse views, and align them to a common goal of a global, interoperable Internet."

The U.K.'s Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Culture, Communications and Creative Industries Edward Vaizey told participants, "The Internet, as it has been governed, has to be seen as an unqualified success story. It's created the opportunity for massive economic growth and for greater intellectual freedom. So if we're going to look at the governance of the Internet, it's important that we preserve those principles."

Board Chair, Dr. Stephen Crocker, embraced ICANN's maturation to meet the needs of an expanding online world.  "Our world, - the Internet world… is constantly evolving, changing to meet the ever-expanding number of global Internet users."

The Board Chair for the UK Internet registry Nominet, Baroness Rennie Fritchie said, "We approach the challenge of Internet governance with the same appetite, finding better ways of doing our bit, working together and a desire to make real progress."

The First Minister of Wales, the Rt Hon Carwyn James told participants that in an increasingly globalized world, having a sense of identity, of course, becomes ever more important.

"The Internet allows us to make connections that go beyond our local neighborhoods and even beyond our country's borders, allowing individuals to develop their personal identity in whatever manner they see fit," James said.

1,800 participants took part @ ICANN 45 meeting

A total of 1,800 participants may have taken part in the just concluded public meeting of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).

Director of Global Media Affairs, Mr. Brad White, disclosed this to ITRealms, saying that people from around the world registered for the meeting, making it the second largest in ICANN history.

Over the years, ICANN has established market competition for generic domain name (gTLD) registrations resulting in a lowering of domain name costs by 80 per cent and saving consumers and businesses over US$1 billion annually in domain registration fees.

 ICANN implemented an efficient and cost-effective Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy (UDRP), which has been used to resolve thousands of disputes over the rights to domain names.

 Working in coordination with the appropriate technical communities and stakeholders, ICANN adopted guidelines for the deployment of Internationalized Domain Names (IDN), opening the way for registration of domains in hundreds of the world's languages.

    Verisign, ICANN and NTIA jointly completed deployment of Domain Name System Security Extensions (DNSSEC) for the root zone in July 2010. These extensions make certain kinds of cyberfraud much more difficult to perpetrate. As of 30 June 2011, 70 TLDs had adopted DNSSEC, including two of the largest TLDs -- .com and .de.

    ICANN created the New gTLD Program, so that any established entity in the world can apply to operate its own top-level domain. Many of these new gTLDs will go online in 2013.

    The world broadly accepts ICANN as the place to work out Internet governance policies. As 2011 ended, the Governmental Advisory Committee represented 109 nations (plus the European Union and the Vatican). The Country Code Names Supporting Organization (ccNSO) represented more than 120 country code domains. The At-Large Advisory Committee represented 134 At-Large Structures (ALSes) from all geographic regions.
