Facebook rolls out video service globally - ITREALMS

With the aim of giving people around the world a new way to discover great videos and interact with friends, content creators and other fans, Facebook has made its video-on-demand service, Facebook Watch available globally while also expanding its Ad Breaks program so more partners can make money from their videos.

According to social media giant’s management, taking Facebook Watch global also means new opportunities for creators and publishers around the world.

Facebook Watch enables users discover new videos spanning entertainment, sports, news and more in a personalized Watch feed, catch up with creators and publishers they love by keeping a watchlist, or a collection of recent videos from Pages they follow, save videos to watch later in Watch as well as participate in videos.

“Over time you'll be able to find new video experiences in your Watch feed, like watch parties, premieres, and videos focused on audience participation — like the new trivia game show, Confetti. And we'll make it easier to find live videos so you can discuss the big moments as they’re happening,” a statement from Facebook reads.

The service was launched in the US a year ago to give people a place on Facebook to find shows and video creators they love and to start conversations with friends, other fans, and even creators themselves. Over the past year, Facebook has made the experience more social — like making it easier to see which videos your friends have liked or shared, creating shows that have audience participation at their core, and opening Watch to videos from Pages.

“These updates have helped people discover and engage more deeply with videos they love — from Red Table Talk with Jada Pinkett Smith, to beauty mogul Huda Kattan’s behind-the-scenes show Huda Boss, to live Major League Baseball games. Every month, more than 50 million people in the US come to watch videos for at least a minute in Watch — and total time spent watching videos in Watch has increased by 14x since the start of 2018. We're excited to bring Watch to everyone around the world and invite you to join in the action in our new video destination,” the statement adds.

To access Watch on iOS and Android, users are urged to look for the Watch icon in their shortcuts bar or the “More” bookmark. Watch is also available on Apple TV, Samsung Smart TV, Amazon Fire TV, Android TV, Xbox One, and Oculus TV.

Meanwhile, the company’s Ad Breaks service, which is designed to allow companies monetize their content, will roll out in the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand on Thursday, August 30, and launch in another 21 countries including France, Germany, Spain and across Latin America and Asia on September 21.

E-commerce grows to $2trn globally

United Nations Conference on Trade & Development (UNCTAD) has grew the electronic commerce market globally estimated at $2 trillion in 2015, reports ITRealms.

The UNCTAD's 2017 Information Economy Report, ITRealms reports placed the value of global e-commerce increased to an estimated $25 trillion in 2015, up from $16 trillion in 2013.

The report stresses that the world is on the cusp of a 'new' digital economy, which will have transformational impacts on the world economy, creating both opportunities and development challenges
UNCTAD also said that its eCommerce Week 2018 will place particular emphasis on the role of digital platforms, a key feature of the evolving digital economy.

Digital platforms - often accessed through mobile apps - bring together and aggregate demand and supply in ways that were not possible before (being faster, cheaper and more easily coordinated), including in geographical areas/service sectors traditionally neglected.

Digital platforms present new opportunities for international trade and efficient economic activities, including for small businesses. However, the extent to which people and enterprises engage and benefit from such platforms varies considerably. There are indeed concerns that they will disrupt economies, with potential negative consequences for employment and working conditions.

ITRealms reports that the fourth E-Commerce Week, with the theme "Development dimensions of digital platforms", will offer a venue for different stakeholders to discuss key challenges and opportunities arising from such platforms, and put forth concrete actions to harness maximum benefits for developing countries.

Android users now enjoy a new version of Opera Mini browser

Android users globally now enjoy a new version of the Opera Mini Mobile browser which comes with redesigned interface, ITRealms can authoritatively report.
The upgraded version of Opera Mini for Android coincides with the announcement of Opera’s high growth targets for the Android platform on Tuesday, April 14, 2015,ITRealms gathered.
The chief executive officer (CEO) of Opera Software, Lars Boilesen confirmed this to  ITRealms.
“We aim to reach 275 million users on the Android platform by 2017, more than doubling today's user base of 130 million. This growth will further cement Opera's position as a dominant browser in fast-growing, emerging economies,” Boilesen said.

Android had over 81 per cent market share among smartphones operating systems in 2014, according to the International Data Corporation (IDC), the global market intelligence firm.

The new user interface, ITRealms learnt comes in the latest Opera Mini with some features including a simplified menu, overhauled speed dial, a private-browsing mode and options to customize the browser layout for more thumb-friendly surfing.

Also, the new Opera mini has a scalable interface with higher resolution for tablets and large phones, updates to discover news feed which provides more latest content across the web as well as a data counter to show daily progress on data savings, helping users keep data costs under control.

ITRealms also discovered that like previous Opera Mini versions, the Opera Mini 8 compresses webpages to as little as 10 per cent of their original size. This decrease in data traffic means users could get to their content faster, and could extend their data plans.
