Scientists effectively tune the brain to alleviate pain

A set of scientists at The University of Manchester, United Kingdom, have shown for the first time that if the brain is ‘tuned-in’ to a particular frequency, pain could be alleviated, reports ITRealms.

Experts, ITRealms gathered defined chronic pain as pain which lasts for more than six months; is a real problem for many people, with 20-50 per cent of the general population estimated to suffer from it, comprising 20 per cent of consultations in general practice.

According to these scientists, it is a much greater problem in the elderly with 62 per cent of the United Kingdom (UK) population over 75 year’s old suffering from it.

“Chronic pain is often a mixture of recurrent acute pains and chronic persistent pain. Unfortunately there are very few treatments available that are completely safe, particularly in the elderly,” says Dr Kathy Ecsy, the lead scientist of this project.

Nerve cells, she explained on the surface of the brain are co-ordinated with each other at a particular frequency depending on the state of the brain. Alpha waves, she said, are tuned at 9-12 cycles per second have been recently associated with enabling parts of the brain concerned with higher control to influence other parts of the brain. 

For instance researchers at the Human Pain Research Group at The University of Manchester found that alpha waves from the front of the brain, the forebrain, are associated with placebo analgesia and may be influencing how other parts of the brain process pain.

This, the team of scientist said, led to the idea that if man could ‘tune’ the brain to express more alpha waves, perhaps we can reduce pain experienced by people with certain conditions.

ITRealms reports that Dr Kathy Ecsy and her colleagues in The University of Manchester’s Human Pain Research Group have shown that this can be done by providing volunteers with goggles that flash light in the alpha range or by sound stimulation in both ears phased to provide the same stimulus frequency.  They found that both visual and auditory stimulation significantly reduced the intensity of pain induced by laser-heat repeatedly shone on the back of the arm.

Professor Anthony Jones is the director of the Manchester Pain Consortium which is focused on improving the understanding and treatment of chronic pain. 

“This is very exciting because it provides a potentially new, simple and safe therapy that can now be trialled in patients,” he said.

At recent public engagements events, ITRealms gathered that showed they had a lot of enthusiasm from patients for this kind of neuro-therapeutic approach.

Further studies, ITRealms gathered are required to test the effectiveness in patients with different pain conditions but the simplicity and low cost of the technology should facilitate such clinical studies.

Dr Chris Brown, who is a Lecturer in Psychology at The University of Liverpool, who was involved in the research while working in Manchester, said: “It is interesting that similar results were obtained with visual and auditory stimulation, which will provide some flexibility when taking this technology into patient studies.  For instance this might be particularly useful for patients having difficulty sleeping because of recurrent pain at night.”

How N67.45m was transfer from NIMASA in 9 days

An account officer with the Access Bank Plc, Oliver Ewerem has narrated how funds were transferred to Gama Marine Nigeria Limited and one Vincent Udoye from a NIMASA account within nine days to the tune of N67.45m, reports ITRealms.

Noteworthy is that a former Director-General of the Nigeria Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Patrick  Ziadeke Akpobolokemi and six others continued before Justice R.I.B Adebiyi of a Lagos State High Court sitting in Igbosere, 

Ewerem made this disclosure while being led in evidence by prosecuting counsel Idris Abdullahi Mohammed, and gave a breakdown of some of the transactions that occurred between 2nd - 11th February, 2015.

“On 2nd February, 2015, there was a credit of N28,000,000 from the account of Committee of Voluntary International Maritime Organization Member State Audit Scheme, (VIMSAS). The same day, another credit of N39, 450,000 entered into account of Gama Marine.

“On 10th February, 2015, there were withdrawals from Gama Marine account in favour of one Vincent Udoye, N10 Million in three tranches which is N30 million was made. Another withdrawal by same Vincent Udoye in three tranches of N10, 000,000 which is N30 million occurred again in the same account.

"Also, on 10 February, 2015, a credit of N10, 000,000 in three tranches was paid  into Vincent Udoye’s account. On 11 February 2015, another credit of N10,000,000 million in three other tranches were again paid into the account of Vincent Udoye, altogether being seven transactions and amounting to N67,450,000."

ITRealms recalls that Akpobolokemi is standing trial alongside six others on a 13-count charge bordering on conspiracy, stealing and fraudulent conversion of funds to the tune of N687, 294,680 (Six Hundred and Eighty Seven Million, Two Hundred and Ninety Four Thousand, Six Hundred and Eighty Naira).

His co-accused persons are Captain Ezekiel Bala Agaba, Ekene Nwakuche, Governor Amechee Juan, Vincent Udoye, Captain Ade Sahib Olopoenia and Gama Marine Nigeria Limited.

Illegal detention of journalist: Lagos NUJ petitions IGP Arase, demands N100m compensation

The Lagos State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has petitioned the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Solomon Arase over the detention of one its members, Yomi Olomofe, demanding damages to the tune of N100m, reports ITRealms.

Olomofe, who had been having a running battle with the Nigeria Customs Service was invited to the police office in Panti, Lagos, for clarification on the matter, but rather than being questioned on the purpose of the visit, was on Thursday detained.

Olomofe, who doubles as the editorial board chairman of Badagry Prime News, was later moved to the Alagbon command in Ikoyi area of the state.

A copy of the petition made available to ITRealms by the union’s lawyer, Jiti Ogunye, the NUJ and Olomofe are seeking for a public apology, assurance of Olomofe’s safety, N100

 million compensation for breach of fundamental rights.

In the said petition, NUJ said that Olomofe has, again, been admitted to the hospital for urgent medical attention and that the shock of his latest harassment has caused him a fresh psychological breakdown and emotional distress, as he has been told by his doctors that he has relapsed into a state of depression with his blood pressure alarmingly high.

“The Nigeria Police Force, under your watch, has done nothing to bring the perpetrators of this dastardly act of attempted murder to justice for nine (9) months is a monumental scandal. But that our client could be framed up and the Police Force, who ought to be his “friend", could be a willing ally or tool of persecution in the hands of those who are still hell-bent on eliminating our client, is worse than a scandal. It is an unmitigated tragedy of policing and law-enforcement in Nigeria. 

“Our position is that although the Police is vested with powers of arrest and detention under the Police Act, Criminal Procedure Act, the Administration of Criminal Justice Law of Lagos, 2011, and the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, there is no lawful excuse or justification for the arrest and detention of our client, his release from Police custody within twenty-four (24) hours in seeming compliance with the provision of Section 35 of the Constitution, notwithstanding. Our client's rights to the dignity of the human person and personal liberty, guaranteed by Sections 34 and 35 of the Constitution, have been violated. And his right to freedom of expression and the press under Section 39 of the same Constitution, as a practicing journalist, who is being cowed, intimidated and harassed [in order  to compel him into self-censorship], is implicated. 

“In the circumstances, we hereby request, that the Nigeria Police Force refrain from further violating the rights of our client, at the instance of his assailants and tormentors, as described above.

“Now that the Nigeria Police Force has not only refused to investigate the complaint of our client, with a view to bringing those who intended and attempted to murder him to justice, but also has joined in the abuse of our client's fundamental human rights, the Nigeria Police Force and the Inspector-General of Police should assure our client, and his family of their continued safety.

“The Nigeria Police Force should investigate the dormant complaint of our client, and bring his assailants, who are still threatening his life, to justice.

“For the aforementioned violation of his rights, the Nigeria Police Force should pay the sum of N100 Million Damages to our client, within twenty-one [21] days of delivery of this petition; and

“That the Inspector-General of Police, on behalf of the Nigeria Police Force, should, within twenty-one [21] days of delivery of this petition, tender a public apology to our client, and the apology should be published in three (3) national newspapers (dailies), for the aforesaid violation of our client's fundamental rights.

“If the Nigeria Police Force refuses, neglects or fails to comply with the demands made herein, within twenty-one [21] days of delivery of this letter, we shall not hesitate to institute a legal action against the Nigeria Police Force and your good self to secure the enforcement of the fundamental rights of our client, in a court of law with requisite jurisdiction”, the petition reads.
