Presidential Task Team denies involvement in Apapa mayhem - ITREALMS

The Presidential Task Team (PTT) denied any involvement with the violence that erupted at the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) Lillypond Truck Transit Park at Ijora, Lagos State, last Thursday, leading to the death of one person and loss of property, reports ITREALMS.

The Task Team urged anyone spreading false information on its involvement to desist forthwith.

A press statement signed by the Executive Vice Chairman of the Presidential Task Team on Apapa, Comrade Kayode Opeifa and made available to ITREALMS on Monday, Opeifa exonerated his team, saying the violence was reportedly fomented by miscreants opposed to the operations of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation and Special Offences (Enforcement Unit) task force in the area.

''We are deeply saddened by the violence and commiserate with the family of the deceased and other victims of the unfortunate incident. But it is important to state categorically that the Presidential Task team was not involved with the unfortunate incident. We therefore call on those spreading such false claims to henceforth desist.''

According to Opeifa, the Task Team empathize with the Nigeria Ports Authority (NPA) whose vehicles and offices were attacked or destroyed in the mayhem.

He also commended the efforts of the Nigerian Police, Lagos Command, and the Lagos State Task Force on Environmental Sanitation and Special Offences (Enforcement Unit) task force for quickly bringing the situation under control, even as it applauded the NPA management for not allowing the situation to adversely affect Ports operations.

''We also commend effort of the Nigerian media for resisting attempt by some vested interests at taking advantage of the incident to discredit the efforts of the Federal Government through the Presidential task team in sanitizing and restoring law and order in the Apapa axis.

''As partners in nation building, we want to urge our friends in the media to always cross check the veracity of their information before publishing so as not to propagate falsehood emanating from some quarters, and which could mislead the public who count on the media for objectivity and professionalism in its reportage,'' part of the press statement read.

Shell team wins NOGIG for record third time

For the third time running, Shell has won the Nigeria Oil and Gas Industry Games (NOGIG), posting a commanding victory streak in the history of the 30-year old triennial competition, reports ITRealms.

At the end of the week-long NOGIG 2018 in Lagos, Team Shell topped the medal table with 11 gold, 12 silver and 11 bronze, leaving the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and Chevron in second and third places respectively.

African LG Peer Review team heads to Morocco

The United Cities and Local Governments of Africa (UCLG Africa) are heading to the city of Rabat, Morocco, for a training workshop for the first cohort of the members of Pan African Local Government Peer Review, reports ITRealms.

The workshop, ITRealms gathered, has been slated for November  1 and 2 at River Hotel to allow self-assessment and peer learning within the local government community of Africa, with an aim to drastically improve the delivery capacity and good governance of local governments and their national associations.

ITRealms reports that the Pan African Peer Review Programme ambition is to bring a local and territorial perspective to the African Peer Review Mechanism of the African Union (APRM).

This Programme, ITRealms recalled was launched in 2012 with the financial support of the Luxembourg Grand Duchy, and the technical support of the Local Government Association of England & Wales (LGA) of the United Kingdom. It started as a pilot project of 5 peer review exercises targeting 3 categories of cities that expressed interest for it: small (less than 100,000 inhabitants) in Otjiwarongo (Namibia); medium-size (between 100,000 and 1 million inhabitants); in Tiassale (Cote d’Ivoire); and major cities (over 1 million inhabitants) in Yaounde (Cameroon); as well as 2 national associations of local government in Ghana with the National Association of Local Government of Ghana (NALAG) and Uganda, with the Ugandan Local Government Association (ULGA).

ITRealms also reports that these peer review exercises were highly appreciated by the political leadership in all the five institutions, following which the office bearers of UCLG Africa decided to transform the pilot project into a full-fledged Pan African Local Government Peer Review Programme.

The 2-day training workshop is meant to capacitate the local government officials and officers that volunteered to serve as members of the Pan African Local Government Review Team to master the process and skills needed to efficiently implement a peer review exercise.

The workshop will be attended by 35 participants from all the regions of Africa, and will include: Political Leaders; City Managers; Chief City Finance Officers; Chief City Technical Officers; Permanent Secretaries of National Associations of Local Governments; Directors of UCLG-Africa Regional Offices.

Eke Ukwu demolition: Why Ekeh, Zinox boss donated N50m, sets up disbursing team

Some cogent reasons have emerged on the motive behind the donation of N50m made by serial technology entrepreneur, and chairman of Zinox Group, Dr. Leo-Stan Ekeh, reports ITRealms.

This is coming as the Leo-Stan Ekeh foundation sets up a team to disburse N50m donation made up of notable indigenes of Imo State.

Investigations by ITRealms showed that Ekeh who is an Owerri native and peace-loving, wanted peace to reign due to losses from demolition of goods and property of citizens.

Ekeh also called on citizens of Imo State to allow peace to reign in the aftermath of the crisis and reported loss of lives which trailed the demolition of the Eke Ukwu market, unarguably the biggest market in the state.

The donation of N50 million, Ekeh explained would be disbursed to those directly affected in the market and families of the victims who unfortunately lost their lives on Saturday. This, he hopes, will help cushion the effects of the demolition on their livelihood and calm the tense situation in Owerri, while also pleading with those affected not to allow themselves to be used to cause trouble in the state.

Confirming this, Head of Leo Stan Ekeh (LSE) Foundation, Mr. Niyi Onabanjo, Ekeh made it clear to the smart implementation committee already set up and headed by a man of integrity, Chief Ambrose Ejiogu, that all those directly affected, by definition, means those trading in the market, whether indigenes of Owerri, Orlu, Okigwe or from neighboring states.

In addition to Chief Ejiogu (Chairman) and Dr. Vin Udokwu (Secretary), other members of the committee are Chief C.Y Amako, Prof. Obioma Iheduru, Chief Emeka Ekwebelem, Mrs. Chuks Ekemaru, Dr. Canice Nwosu, Prof. Henry Njoku, Sam Nwoke and Chief Analyn Nwaneri, among others.

The committee’s mandate is to work with the leadership of the market association in identifying those affected for disbursement of the funds to them. This, he hopes, will be sorted out within two weeks and funds disbursed 21 days from today.

Onabanjo hinted that Ekeh had two months ago awarded a multi-million Naira contract for a comprehensive refurbishment of a Practical Entrepreneurship Centre sited inside a market in Owerri which is slated for commissioning first week of November as a model.

He believes if the model works, the Imo state government may replicate same in other regions for the benefit of her citizens.

“Though a private initiative, I am sure he would have mentioned it to the State Governor. He intends to invite quality multinationals like Microsoft, Google, HP, IBM, Cisco, Facebook etc. to come and inspire Imo State youths so that they can see the bigger picture of the global wealth roadmap. As a promoter of knowledge democracy, he has been quietly assisting his state in the little ways he can.”

Team Offikwu wins NCC Tennis Cup 2016

Team Offikwu has won the NCC Tennis Cup 2016 and taken home the star prize of Seven Million Naira N7million), after upsetting the defending champions (Tombim) who took home- N5million) on Sunday at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club (LLTC), Onikan, Lagos; ITRealms reports.

Before the all- exciting but over-stretched  grand finale game, Team Civil Defence had won the Third place prize of N3million having beaten Team FCT to the Fourth  position with N2million prize.

Speaking at the grand finale of the tournament, Solomon Dalung, Minister of Youth and Sports, commended NCC for setting the tune in line with the policy direction of the Federal Government by inviting the private sectors’ interests to sports development.

“This national league, Dalung said, “Was organized in all the six geo-political zones of this country including Abuja, without the Federal Government giving a dime as intervention. Yet, it has been a very huge success; evidence that if Federations organize themselves very well there are so much for them to benefit from sponsors.

“I want to congratulate the young people that have won in various categories including sums of cash prizes. This is an indication that in hard work there is a gain. I want to encourage the young people to use this period of their youthful lives to participate in sports because there are employments, wealth and ‘weapon’ in sports that you can use to combat poverty”.

The minister re-echoed Federal Goverbnment’s resolve to continue to invest in sports while dropping the hint that the government would take more active interest in the development, governance and administration of the various Federations to ensure that transparency, accountability and management of resources remain the order of the day.

Also speaking at the event, Professor Umar Danbatta, executive vice chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) descried the feat as a total accomplishment on the part of NCCin view of the excitement and personalities that graced the grand finale.

Danbatta who was represented by head of Public Relations at the Commission, Mr. Reuben Muoka,  noted that the Minister had followed up on the NCC-sponsored tourney from the fixtures through the start- of till the finals.

He appreciated the minister for his sense of humility, commitment and endurance which he displayed by attending the tournament and sitting through to watch every match in spite of his tight schedule in office.

“This shows a great support to what NCC is doing. NCC is encouraged. We are happy the way it turned as the best team emerged the winner.

“This team is new in the tournament and they actually invited players even from abroad. The NCC Tennis League has come to a stage when teams buy players while giving home based players succour. The league has brought about stiff competition and the best Nigerian players are participating too.

“NCC had at the maiden edition in 2015 spelt out the aims of the League as a way to take top flight tennis to different cities and parts of the country which has never hosted such tennis events; to develop squads that will attract sponsorship and get high level coaches attached to teams.

“The tournament is also regarded as an avenue created by the NCC to provide some substantial prize monies that will enable top national players invest in their professional tennis careers and attain a world ranking that will enable them create wealth for themselves, their families and the nation.

“We also value this tournament as an avenue to introduce many more weeks of tennis competition into the Nigerian tennis calendar that will allow national players compete regularly and achieve some rapid improvement in skill levels,” he added.

The final match between Sylvester Emmanuel representing Offikwu, the highest ranked Nigerian on the ATP circuit, and Moses Michael, national champion who represented Team Tombim ended at 6-2; 6-1.

Dignitaries on the occasion also included former Vice-President, Alex Ekwume and Barrister Rotimi Edu, Chairman, LLTC; Nduka Oduzor, among other dignitaries.

In his post-victory chat with media practitioners, Sylvester Emmanuel extolled NCC for organizing the tournament which he said add glamour to the tennis calendar in Nigeria.

“This season has been a wonderful one for me and the team and we hope 2017 will be there. In the coming year, I will be playing more of the international competitions; I will be moving to Barcelona for the training and tournament”; the new champion said.

He recalled that in the past, local players used to complain of lack of competitions, but the NCC tournament and others have now provided real opportunity for young tennis players to prove their worth on the game.

Emmanuel who doubles as Team Offikwu captain, added: “It means a lot to us as players, because we had just two tournaments- the CBN and the Dalung Cup. But with this king of league as organized by NCC, you will know there is tournament to play each week; traveling from one State to another.

“The organisers really did very well. I want to give them all the credit and we hope they continue”.

AfDB, FMW joint team visits Abia, inspects Federal Roads in Aba

A joint team of experts were in Aba, Abia State from the headquarters of the African Development Bank (AfDB) in Abidjan, led by Mr. Mwila Aeron Katambula, the Bank's Transport Specialist, and a team from the Ministry of Works, for the final lap of talks between Abia State Government and AfDB on some developmental projects of interest to the bank in Abia State, reports ITRealms.

The state Governor, Dr Okezie Ikpeazu, who received the team and another team from the Federal Ministry of Works Abuja that accompanied the AfDB team on Wednesday at the Government House Umuahia, said that Abia State can't wait to see the commencement of reconstruction of some major roads in Aba, especially Port Harcourt road and Ikot Ekpene road, among others.  

"Road infrastructure is very important to us in Aba. Apart from being the commercial nerve Centre of Abia, Aba is the SME Centre of Nigeria. Aba is very important to the economy of both Abia and Nigeria. So, the issue of road infrastructure, waste management and storm water management are the challenges we face in Aba. 

"Abia State does not have the resources to do good work at Port Harcourt and Ikot Ekpene roads. With your visit today, you've renewed our hope that help will come very soon and the roads will be fixed.

"On our part we have tried to do what is required of us in terms of ensuring that the ground work is done to enable AfDB come in." The Governor said. 

Speaking on why they're in Abia, Katambula said: "We are eager to participate in the development of Abia State. Our mission today is a follow up to meeting we had before, we want to ensure that everything is ready because we want to fast track the projects that the bank will take up in Abia."

The AfDB and FMW teams later met with the State's Commissioners for Works, Hon. Eziuche Ubani, and that of Finance, Hon. Obinna Oriaku, and other top state government officials.

After several hours of meetings, the Commissioner for Works, Hon. Ubani led the two teams to Aba, to have on the spot assessment of the two key Federal Roads: Port Harcourt and Ikot Ekpene Roads located in the commercial city. 

The inspection tour offered them the opportunity of first hand information of the level of decay of the roads and the trauma and suffering of the residents and travelers in and around these two key roads.

AfDB is currently doing the technical analysis and studies of the roads before releasing funds for repairs of the roads.

This accounts for why the AfDB team had to come with the FMW team to meet face to face with Governor Ikpeazu and his team in Abia. 

During the visit to Aba, the Commissioner for Works, Hon Ubani told the AfDB and FMW team that the state government "is desperate to fix roads in Abia, and Aba in particular to stimulate economic activities and drive development across the state" 

"So far we've done a good number of roads which fall within the responsibility of the state, but unfortunately, we can't fix federal roads without first agreeing on terms of fixing them with the Federal Government. 

"Unfortunately we don't have the amount of money required to fix these roads, especially Port Harcourt and Ikot Ekpene roads that is why we are delighted to have the AfDB here together with a team from the Federal ministry of works, to see the level of deterioration of these roads."

Onyemenam says @NIMC 'We’ve attained paradigm shift'

The Director General/CEO of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) Barrister Chris Onyemenam, has said his team attained a paradigm shift with the successful setup and implementation of the National Identity Management Scheme (NIMS) in the country, reports ITRealms.

Onyemenam made this declaration in a chat with selected media over the weekend, saying that the value proposition that flows from the NIMS cuts across the three tiers of the government, the private sector, the family, and to the international society.

“If you take it by extension to the civil service generally, the concept of ghost workers or duplicate identities will be eliminated. No one can be in Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS) more than once, because the individual will be traced through the biometrics and the National Identification Number (NIN),” he said.

The NIMC DG expressed confidence in the current setup of the scheme, revealing that the Commission activities is in tandem with global best practice, which says, “Uniquely identify every citizen and legal resident, in terms of ‘who you are’ and not what you are eligible to or what you can participate in like the Voter card, or what you are obliged to like Tax, or what you need like the driver’s license.”

Onyemenam explained that the ability to create a single version of truth will serve the entire country because the NIMS is a cross cutting platform. 

“If you don’t know people and they commit a crime, they can deny it. If someone is able to have more than one identity then they can benefit from their own acts of deception,” he said.

As said by him, nowadays, 419 is rampant because people could claim to be who they are not and still get away with it. 

“So in terms of fighting crime, what we have done with the NIMS is an important tool for law enforcement agencies to fight crime, corruption and/or ensuring that the war against corruption succeeds, because you can’t hide from yourself after having been identified by the Commission as a criminal,” Onyemenam said.

He emphasised that because it is from birth to death, NIMS provides the economic planners of the country that hardcore data about some of the social economic characteristics of citizens in a slightly more factual sense than what other organisation provides, for instance, “if you know the people in the age bracket 0-13 and you want to be able to feed them, you will use the uniqueness of the identity that has been given to them, to ensure that the benefit goes to them only.” 

The same, he said, applies to scholarships, bursaries, stipends to the unemployed, etc. this is the kind of benefit that the element of none repudiation and unique identification confirms on the administration of subsidies, special programmes, and general economic management or eceonomc governance in the country.
