The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Hon. Justice Olukayode Ariwoola has pronounced the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), a worthy telecom regulator in Nigeria for its dedicated efforts in promoting awareness and knowledge of Information Communications Technologies (ICT), among the judiciary in particular, and the Nigerian public.

The CJN who is the Chairman, Board of Governors of the NJI, spoke in an opening remark at the 2023 edition of NCC-hosted annual workshop for judges on telecommunications issues, which began in Kano on Monday.

A group, Kano North Renaissance (KNR), has applauded the Executive Vice Chairman, Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta, over his recent emergence as the regulator of the year at the prestigious Vanguard Newspapers Award.

The award was presented to the professor of telecommunications in recognition of his outstanding contributions to Nigeria's digital economy.

The award was conferred on Danbatta in recognition of the EVC's effective regulatory achievements through cutting-edge initiatives, especially during his first five years in office during which Nigeria’s telecom sector has shown spectacular landmarks, at a glamorous ceremony at the Eko Hotels & Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos on Friday.

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has bagged the 2021 ITREALMS Telecom E-Waste Regulator Award, reports ITREALMS.

The award, ITREALMS also gathered, was presented on behalf of the management of ITREALMS Media group by the president of the National Association of Telecom Subscribers (NATCOMS), Chief Deolu Ogunbanjo, at the 2021 ITREALMS E-Waste Dialogue held Thursday at the Welcome Centre Hotels, Lagos, with the theme “e-Waste in Nigeria: Consumer as key to Circular Economy & 20 years of GSM.”

Cable operator rejects regulator’s market analysis - ITREALMS

The cable operators have rejected the telecommunications regulator’s draft broadband market analysis, submitted today, Friday, reports ITRealms.

According to the Cable Europe, the European Commission should not to accept Dutch regulator, the Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM’s) draft broadband market analysis.

ACM, as reported by Broadbandtvnews, has concluded that VodafoneZiggo holds “joint significant market power (SMP)” together with Dutch incumbent operator KPN. As a direct consequence both operators will have to provide wholesale access to third parties. The analysis now rests with the European Commission, which has the power to accept or reject the proposed measures.

“This proposed intervention in the Dutch market is anachronistic and runs contrary to the consumer interest. My first reaction is one of astonishment,” commented Matthias Kurth, Executive Chairman of Cable Europe.

“The Dutch market is highly competitive and is often cited as best in class by international observers. It scores high on the Commission Digital Economy and Society Index. 

"Consumers have the choice between two very fast broadband services practically everywhere in the country. The market is extremely dynamic and characterised by innovation, quality of service and affordable prices and there is a commercial wholesale access offer in the market (KPN).

“Imposing onerous regulation using the concept of joint SMP in a market with these characteristics will set a negative precedent in Europe. Regulatory intervention comes with risks which are often difficult to gauge in advance. The negative consequences of this proposed regulation will outweigh any marginal improvements the regulator is seeking to achieve. I hope the Commission will examine this analysis with great care and conclude that the Dutch market and its citizens already benefit from effective competition.”

Smile toasts Danbatta, NCC on African Regulator of the Year Award

Smile Telecoms Holdings Limited has given a toast to the Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta and the entire staff of the commission on winning the African Regulator of the year ward 2015, recently, reports ITRealms.

In a letter signed by its Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Irene Charnley, the operator also commended the leadership of the NCC’s chief, which has continued to win more accolades and laurels for the nation.

“We recognize this ward as a testimony to the hard work, innovation and leadership of the NCC in driving the growth of telecommunications and, in particular, broadband in Nigeria under your able stewardship,” the letter noted.

Special Assistant on Media to EVC, Yakubu Musa quoted Charnley as noting that available statistics and evidence from Smiles own operations in Nigeria, convinced the telco that under your leadership, the NCC will continue to win accolades and that indeed, Nigeria and Africa will benefit from the innovative interventions the commission continues to introduce.

“It is our expectation that this award will spur the NCC on to become even more innovative in its efforts to ensure that Nigeria meets the targets it set for itself in the Nigerian National Broadband Plan,” the letter further noted.

The commission carted away the award at African Information Technology and Telecoms Awards (AITTA) recently in Ghana, and less than 14 days later, it added the European Award for Best Practices 2016 to its collection.

The award ceremony which held in Brussels, Belgium was hosted by the European Society for Quality Research (ESQR), an affiliate of the European Union (EU).

“No fewer than 63 countries participated in the award ceremony out of which the NCC won the European Award for Best Practices 2016.  The award which is the Gold category is “in recognition of its outstanding commitment, support and results in quality management strategies.”

NCC shines as African regulator award in Accra

The apex telecommunications regulator in the country, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) at the weekend shined as the award for the African Regulator Award was handed over to the commission in the city of Accra, capital of Ghana, reports ITRealms.

According to the chief executive officer and publisher of London-based MobileWorld magazine and United Kingdom (UK) registered Instinct Wave Incorporate, Mr. Akin Naphtal, the Africa Information Technology and Telecoms Award (AITTA) happened at Kempinski Hotel, Gold Coast City, Accra, Ghana was the climax of a two-day 3rd West Africa Telecom Summit and Expo 2016.

He also disclosed that the Director, Public Affairs at NCC, Mr. Tony Ojobo who represented the Executive Vice Chairman (EVC), Prof. Umar G. Danbatta received the award presented by Ghana’s Chief Regulator and Director-General, National Communications Authority (NCA), Mr. William Tevie.

The MobileWorld boss explained that the choice of NCC as the winner of the award based on the U.K. firm’s Intelligence Unit gathering of data across the African continent. Stressing, “NCC’s strong and committed effort to enhance competitiveness and innovation as factors of economic growth” made it the winner of the award.

He further said that NCC’s transparent regulatory activities, prudent management of spectrum and human resources made the Commission, a regulator of choice.

Besides these, the NCC remains the pathfinder and first among equals as far as telecommunications activities are concerned that is why it remains a shining example of how the sector should be regulated.

Today, Nigeria is the investors’ first choice for telecommunications investments in Africa.

The organisers also said, that Nigeria by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) assessment recorded the highest and fastest growth in numbers connected by five years consecutively and so got global nods for that and coming home to Africa, the continent has continued to benefit from NCC’s experience and expertise.

In addition, he said, the active subscriber base of Nigeria surpasses those of several countries combined in Africa and Africa’s largest networks reside in Nigeria, all thanks to the robust regulatory activities of Commission.

Responding, Ojobo dedicated the award to the Almighty God, asserting it is “a motivation for the Commission to do more, in protecting both the consumers and operators.”

SIM card deactivation, not total withdrawal - NCC

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has reacted to a spate of complaints following the deactivation of unregistered Subscriber Identification Module (SIM) cards by operators, as directed recently by the regulator, reports ITRealms.

NCC also said that only those subscribers who registered their SIM cards properly will have them reactivated.

NCC Director, Public Affairs, Mr. Tony Ojobo made this clarification, saying that the Commission has been saturated with inquiries, some of which alluded to the impression that their SIM cards have been withdrawn permanently. 

“This is not the situation,” he declared, adding that “the deactivation exercise and decision was a result of a meeting with the office of National Security Adviser (NSA), the Department of State Service (DSS), the NCC and operators “after which the operators were given one-week to deactivate those unregistered and improperly registered SIM cards.”

The operators were specifically told that those subscribers whose lines were not registered and have not made any effort to register them should be communicated before deactivation.

“So the deactivation of these SIM cards is in line with that meeting. Subscribers who fail to register properly will have their lines deactivated but those who comply will have them reactivated,”Ojobo said.

“Proper registration means a subscriber’s facial pictures properly captured, biometrics/finger prints, valid means of identification, address, among others,” he explained.

Further, Ojobo said that these are part of the security measures to check incessant cases of crimes with the use of the telephone.

“People hide under anonymity to commit crimes because their lines are not registered, but all that has to change as the network operators have been told what to do,” he emphasized.

ITRealms reports that the ultimatum to deactivate unregistered SIM card expired on Tuesday this week.

The operators, he said, were told among others to ensure compliance of all registration with the Data Dictionary, Technical Specifications on Finger prints and facial images and the business rules agreed by all stakeholder.
