The traditional ruler of Awba-Ofemili in Awka-North Local Government Area of Anambra State and Ofemili 1 of Awba-Ofemili, His Royal Highness, Igwe Ezekwesili Maduagwuna has held his 2023 Iwaji ceremony, reports ITREALMS.

The Iwaji Ofemili, according to the Palace Secretary, Ozo Isaac Akubuko, took place, weekend at Igwe’s palace in Awba-Ofemili and saw many dignitaries gracing the occasion from far and near, while some were honoured including the newly appointed Special Adviser on Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) to the Transition Chairman of the Awka-North, Hon. Chukwuma Nwankwo.

Hon. Nwankwo was recognised and honoured with the title of Akwudoleze n’ Awba-Ofemili by HRH Ofemili 1 of Awba-Ofemili among others.

Lagos Exco holds first-ever virtual meeting - ITREALMS

The Lagos State Government Executive Council, Tuesday leveraged technologies for their weekly meeting, reports ITREALMS.

Sources close to Alausa Secretariat, informed ITREALMS that it was banters here and there, waving of hands and laughter.

“Can you see me?” Am I connected?” “Yeah, I’m here”.

"Suddenly, at about 11.05am, the Chairman enters and announces his presence by calling the house to order. All is quiet.

"It was an exciting moment this morning at the Lagos State Executive Council (EXCO) meeting – the first-ever virtual meeting in the history of governance in the State. Nigeria? Well, not clear.

"The Chairman is no other person than Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu. The Deputy Chair is Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, the Deputy Governor.

"Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso said the meeting was held via Zoom, a free high-definition (HD) meeting application with video and screen sharing for up to 100 people.

"It was all in compliance with the directive against gatherings as part of the anti-Coronavirus battle-plan.

“The meeting was slated for 10.45am but almost all EXCO members had hooked up to the system by 10.00am, awaiting the arrival of Mr. Governor to kickstart deliberations for the day,” Omotoso said.

Governor Sanwo-Olu came online at about 11.05am. On top of the agenda was the review of the management of COVID-19, especially the provision of additional isolation centres; the fumigation of the State against the spread of the virus, and the package for the less-privileged and daily income earners, the indigent.

“The Commissioner for Agriculture, Mr. Gbolahan Lawal briefed members on the distribution of the relief packages to local governments and local council development areas. Members reviewed areas where teething problems occurred and proffered ideas to solve identified problems,” he added.

"There were comments by some members. As the debates and clarifications went on, the Chairman announced that those eager to speak should spend a minute each.

"While acknowledging the excitement of members for being part of the first virtual meeting of the Lagos State Executive Council, the Commissioner said the feat affirmed that governance in Lagos will proceed seamlessly despite the 14-day restriction announced by President Muhammadu Buhari.
ITREALMS recalls that Lagos and Ogun States as well as the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja are on a 14-day lockdown.

“Members were in high spirits. Some of us were in our offices; others attended the online meeting from the comfort of their homes. With this historic achievement, residents are assured that governance in Lagos State will continue, irrespective of the situation around us,” Omotoso asserted.

The idea of the online meeting was mooted by Governor Sanwo-Olu, who directed the Ministry of Science and Technology to facilitate it. The Special Adviser (Innovation and Technology), Mr. Olatunbosun Alake, moderated the meeting, reading out the dos and don’ts of the session which Science and Technology Commissioner, Hakeem Fahm described as “historic”.

“We should let our people know about this,” Waterfront Infrastructure Development Commissioner, Kabiru Ahmed said excitedly after the meeting.

Trauma conference holds in Lagos today - ITREALMS

A non-governmental organization (NGO), Trauma Care International Foundation (TCIF) has concluded plans to host its first-ever trauma conference on Tuesday, November 19, this year with the theme ‘Trauma Care: The Way Forward,’ reports ITREALMS.

Director of TCIF, Dr Deola Philips said, addressing the menace of trauma has become a public health burden in the country, hence the conference.

On the theme ‘Trauma Care: The Way Forward,’ Dr Philips said the objective of the conference is to provide a platform for debate and stimulation of inter-disciplinary discussions in the fields of trauma care and emergency response management.

She also said, the conference will provide a platform for policy makers, senior government officials, the academia, media practitioners, corporate organizations, professional associations, scholars and volunteers from various health and trauma-related disciplines to come together and discuss how their various disciplines can collectively contribute towards the development of workable ways to address trauma as an emerging public health challenge in our society.

A press statement available to ITREALMS, she was equally quoted as saying that the conference would be used as a platform for a formal introduction of TCIF to all key stakeholders in Trauma management in Nigeria and a launch of the TCIF Trauma Stakeholders' Forum.

The main focus of discussion at the conference would comprise the National Health Act and its provisions for Emergency Care; Improvements in Pre-Hospital Emergency Care Systems; Delivering Advanced Trauma & Emergency Care in Low-Income Settings; Transforming Health Care in Nigeria through Trauma Network; Building Sustainable Trauma Care Systems in Nigeria and in West Africa; Securing Health Care Financing For Trauma And Emergency Services: National Basic Health Care Provision Fund; and Voluntary Blood Donation as a worthy cause.

The special guest of honour, she said, would be Dr. Osagie Ehanire, Honourable Minister of Health, Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Confirmed keynote speaker, she said is Senator Ibrahim Oloriegbe, Chairman Senate Committee on Health under the Distinguished Chairmanship of Prince Julius Adewale Adelusi-Adeluyi, Chairman Juli Plc and former Health Minister.

Further, she said, on-site participation is strictly by invitation and advised potential participants to register online.

ICT holds key to credible elections in Nigeria – Prof. Aderounmu

The President of the Nigeria Computer Society (NCS) and Co-Centre Leader, World Bank-Designated Centre of Excellence in Software Engineering, Professor Adesola Aderounmu, has said that Information and Communication Technology (ICT) holds the future of credible elections in the country, reports ITRealms.

In a keynote at the 5th Covenant University Conference on e-Governance in Nigeria, recently, Prof. Aderounmu insisted that to guarantee the credibility of future election process, it must be ICT-driven process.

He also urged Nigerians to beginning to form the electoral culture of institutionalizing ICT in this area.

He lamented that elections in Nigeria hitherto have been that of violence and discord.

“Since the dawn of politics in post-colonial Nigeria, our elections have mostly been a tug of war, riddled with violence, rigging and all manners of complications,” he said.

Stressing that democratic experience has been progressively retrogressive, essentially because the electoral process has been consistently defective.

“Free and fair elections in our part of the world have been rare like an exotic treasure that you only find by luck. In short, ours has been a history of traumatic electoral misadventures that have been part of indices defining us as a third world country lagging behind the advanced democracies of the West,” he said.

Prof. Aderounmu noted the importance of highlighting the existence of a genuine need for ICT systems for development in sub-Sahara Africa.

“In particular, we have to distinguish elections as the best opportunity to encourage political leaders to promote innovation in the polity. So, using ICT to elect credible leaders could motivate successful and satisfied politicians to encourage emerging governments to adapt the innovations to mainstream development and governance.

“As the 2019 elections draw closer, there is no doubt that putting in place relevant ICT infrastructure now for the application of adaptable technology in our electoral processes will go a long way to ensure transparency and credibility of the elections.

“It is a welcome development that the leveraging of technology had started, even if rudimentary, with the last 2015 elections that ushered in the present administration in Nigeria.

“For instance, the application of technology for biometric registration of voters, the issuance of smart permanent voters card (PVCs) to voters and voter verification and authentication using the smart card reader, has helped the infiltration of ICT into the electoral process.

“So also was the idea to scan and upload all voting result sheets for all the elections on a database, which was made accessible to all stakeholders for some months after the 2015 elections.

“All these formative adaptations of technology with the 2015 elections are commendable, but there is still a long way to go with our future elections. Let us now go into specifics on how ICT can transform our future electoral processes and elections,” he said.

Trust for organisation holds key for success – Edelman Barometer

Trust and credibility survey among Nigerians in institutions, government, business, media and non-governmental organisations has revealed that 72 per cent of the populace ranked trust in an organisation as number one consideration above other factors when buying a product or relating with them, reports ITRealms. 

In the first-ever 2018 Edelman Trust Barometer Report unveiled in Lagos, Nigeria, weekend at Eko Hotel & Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos, Nigerians sampled in the survey said although a good reputation may get them to try a product, but unless they trust the company behind the product, they will soon stop buying it regardless of its reputation.

“Eighty-seven per cent of the respondents say companies that only think about themselves and their profits are bound to fail,” the report indicated, noting that respondents’ expectation is that businesses should be the driver of economic prosperity rather than mining profits to themselves only.

“Fifty-seven per cent agree that driving the economic prosperity of our country is one of the most important things businesses should do,” it affirmed.

The presentation of the 2018 Edelman Trust Barometer in Nigeria by Edelman was organised by Chain Reactions Nigeria, Edelman’s Exclusive Nigerian Affiliate and the Preferred West African Partner, with the theme: “The Battle for Truth.”

Speaking at the presentation of the global data from the report, Managing Director, Edelman South Africa, Jordan Rittenberry, expressed concern that the overall global assessment of the four mainstream institutions showed declines in trust about business and non-governmental organisations in 14 of the 28 countries sampled, and therefore called on key decision makers in the respective organisations to be deliberate in building their trust asset through increased investment.

Rittenberry said: “Over time trends have shown there is low trust in business and non-governmental organisations, so it is important that people in these institutions pay more attention to how the citizens trust them.”

Rittenberry added that “media is now least trusted institution” as a result of the menace of fake news which he noted has moved from being just a phenomenon to a key factor in shaping perception.

“People define media as both content and platforms, so nearly seven in 10 worry about false information or fake news being used as a weapon,” he declared.

The Managing Director/Chief Strategist, Chain Reactions Nigeria, Israel Jaiye Opayemi, in a welcome speech enthused that the inclusion of Nigeria in the annual survey for the first in the 18-year-old history of Edelman Trust Barometer was in fulfillment of the company’s promise last year to ensure Nigeria was in focus among the comity of nations of reckon annually sampled by Edelman. 

 

“Trust sits at the heart of social capital. For those who were here last year, we made a promise that Nigeria would be included in the 2018 deck of the Edelman Trust Barometer. I am happy to announce that we are here today to fulfill that promise,” he said.

HDP holds national convention today

ITREALMS:

All is now set for the national convention of the Hope Democratic Party (HDP) today in Abuja, ITRealms reports.

The national chairman of the party, Chief Ambrose Owuru confirmed this to ITRealms in a public statement, saying that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has accepted the Wednesday, March 21, 2018 as the convention date.

Owuru also said that the meeting would be used to prepare the party and strategize for the forthcoming 2019 elections, as well as elect its national officers.

"The venue of the convention is Hope Dove, Life Camp, Abuja," he declared.

Hope Democratic Party (HDP) was registered on November 10, 2006, later de-registered by the Independent National Electoral Commission in 2011, but was later reinstated by a federal high court judgment in 2015. 

HDP participated in the last 2015 general elections and was one of the 14 political parties that fielded presidential candidates in the last presidential election.

In 2015, Hope Democratic Party (HDP) developed five plan revolution blueprints for its envisioned new Nigeria. The 5 plan revolution blueprints are Agricultural and Industrial Revolution, Health and Educational Revolution, Economic and Political Revolution, Infrastructure and Leadership Revolution and Cultural and Security Revolution.

Owuru, who was also the party’s presidential candidate in the last election, further explained that the party’s five plan revolution blueprints, include “The execution of this well articulated welfarist programme is articulated to reverse in positive light the current or prevalent overtly negatively adopted capitalist tendencies that has over time bred corruption in Nigeria and which also has over time grown into a cankerworm permeating all spheres of the life of our people in the country thereby stalling any sustainable developmental projects such as funds for world class infrastructural development, good roads, steady jobs and general welfare of Nigeria citizenry are channeled to private accounts breeding social injustice in the land, mass poverty and disparities between the poor and the rich and which in turn breeds social misfit and ready hands for crime, terrorist recruitment leading to insecurity in the country.”

News Express unveils new logo, holds 5th lecture

Nigeria’s influential online newspaper, News Express, today marked its fifth anniversary with a well-attended Lecture during which it also unveiled its new logo. Venue of the event was the upscale Sheraton Hotel & Towers, Ikeja, Lagos.

The event attracted an array of distinguished personalities from all spheres of endeavour and heavy media presence. The Guest Lecturer, Governor Abubakar Sani Bello of Niger State, spoke on the theme, “National Unity and the Demand for Restructuring — A Governor’s Perspective”. The Governor, who was held back in Abuja by the National Economic Meeting, was represented by his Chief Press Secretary, Mallam Jibrin Baba Ndace, who did justice to the topic.

Managing Director of Nigeria Export Processing Zones Authority (NEPZA), Hon. Emmanuel Jime, delivered the Keynote Address on the theme, “Using the Platform of Public Office to Reclaim the Promise of Our Destiny”. He was unavoidably absent but was represented by a Deputy Director in his office, Barrister Richard Obianu, who expertly delivered his paper.

Other speakers included Presidential Spokesman Femi Adesina; Chairman of Zinox Technologies Limited, Leo Stan Eke; and General Manager, External Relations, Nigeria LNG Limited, Dr. Kudo Eresia-Eke, all of whom held the full house spell-bound with their masterly deliveries.

Chaired by eminent lawyer and President Emeritus of Aka Ikenga think tank, Chief Goddy Uwazurike, the event also graced by NTA Lagos Channel 10, Mrs. Helen Onma Odeleye; while former Anambra State Governor and Director General of Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr. Dakuku Peterside, sent representatives. Peter Obi was represented by his Special Adviser, Barrister Valentine Obienyem and Dr. Peterside by NIMASA Director of Legal Services, Barrister Abdulsalam Suleiman.

One of the highlights of the occasion was the unveiling of the new logo of News Express, depicting two intertwined circles – one red and one black – along with the name of the paper. The circles represent the world while red stands for day and black night.

The new logo was unveiled by Presidential Spokesman Femi Adesina while it was interpreted by Speech Coach and Registrar of the Institute of Certified Communicators of Nigeria (ICCOM), Mr. Chris Nkwocha.

A thrilling poetry performance by Oluseye Noiki further added colour to the event.
