Border closure: FG lists gains, says import revenue rose by 15% - ITREALMS
The Federal Government has listed gains of its current border closure to include higher import revenue, lower domestic fuel consumption and increased rice production by local farmers among the gains of the closure of the country's land borders in four geo-political zones of the country, reports ITREALMS.
The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, disclosed these gains when he visited the Seme Border on Monday, along with Minister of Foreign Affairs Geoffrey Onyeama; Minister of Interior Rauf Aregbesola, Minister of State for Finance, Budget and National Planning Clement Agba, National Security Adviser Babagana Monguno and the Comptroller General of the Nigerian Immigration Service Muhammed Babandede.
He said since the closure, the monthly import revenue has increased by 15 per cent, instead of dropping as expected in many quarters, while the local consumption of fuel has dropped by 30 per cent, apparently due to reduced smuggling of the products to neighbouring countries.
Alhaji Mohammed also said the closure has so far curbed the smuggling of foreign rice into the country, in addition to other prohibited items.
''There has been an enhanced production and milling of Nigerian rice. Patronage of Nigerian rice has also increased and farmers are expanding their farms as well as engaging more hands,'' he said.
The Minister put the value of items seized since the closure at over N3,500,000,000, listing such items as including 38,743 of 50kg bags of parboiled foreign rice, 514 vehicles, 1,012 drums filled with PMS, 5,400 Jerrycans of vegetable oil, 346 motorcycles, 10,553 Jerrycans of PMS and 136 bags of NPK fertilizer used for making explosives.

#BoycottGTBankOverInnoson hashtag gains momentum
The trending hashtag ‘#BoycottGTBankOverInnoson’ condemning
the ‘commando’ abduction of the chairman, Innoson Motors Group, Chief Innocent
Chukwuma, has continued to gain momentum as more Nigerians join campaign,
reports ITRealms.
The hashtag ‘#BoycottGTBankOverInnoson’ was as a result of
backlash following the commando abduction of Chief Chukwuma, on Tuesday early
hours by the men of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) from
his residence at Savage Crescent, GRA Enugu.
In support for this campaign some Igbo entrepreneurs have
commenced closure of their both business and personal accounts with GTBank.
This, ITRealms gathered
include the sale of GTBank shares at the stock market, which is anticipated to
affect the bank’s trading at the Stock Exchange in the coming days as the rush to
disassociate themselves with GTBank continues.
In a related development, CKN News reports that there is a
sustained campaign against GTbank over arrest of the Managing Director of
Nigeria's indigenous motor assembly plant, Innoson Motors, since his arrest Tuesday,
thousands of Nigerians from a section of
the country have vowed to close down their accounts with the Bank, some have
already done that and posted them on social media . Investigation by CKN News
revealed that even the elites among them were not exempted.
According to reports, a very popular hotelier that owns a
four star in Owerri is one of those who has done that.
ITRealms gathered
that the message is already trending on social media, while GTBank management
insists they have no hand in the arrest of Chukwuma by EFCC.
One of the concerned Nigerian declared that “the bank is
lucky to steal money from a person's account and yet keep ignoring the orders
of tiers of courts to pay back with interest. That is possible only in a
lawless country.”
Our source noted that in the United States, the court that
ordered the bank to pay the debt incurred would have used its instruments to
sell the GTB'S assets and recover the money for the victim.

Continental rail project gains momentum
The first meeting of the steering committee and experts of the Continental High Speed Rail Network project ended in Dakar, with the aim of sharing the experiences of member countries while waiting for the feasibility study, reports ITRealms.
The two-day meeting of the coordination mechanism for this project is an initiative of the NEPAD Agency, in the framework of the African Union's Agenda 2063, which is the main continental strategy for regional integration through the provision of infrastructure.
“The Continental High Speed Rail Network project is backed by a long-term vision that has a draft action plan and an institutional framework, a general framework in which several actions have been carried out since 2015,” remarked Louis Napo, Advisor on the High Speed Train project at the NEPAD Agency. An overall feasibility study of the project needs to be developed in order to proceed to the implementation phase.
“However, this initiative will not start from scratch as several countries are engaged in similar projects, wherein some are still in the planning phase,” said Adama Deen, Senior Advisor to the CEO, and Project Manager, Continental High Speed Railway Project, at the NEPAD Agency.
The first session of the meeting was devoted to presentations on the experiences of Senegal, South Africa and Morocco, the latter two countries considered to be the most advanced in this field, which can inspire other countries on the continent.
The presentations by officials of railway companies in Senegal, South Africa and Morocco were followed by questions and comments, in order to inspire the best strategy possible for the project of the Continental High Speed Railway Network.
Adama Deen then went back on the actions taken before stressing the need to develop a study and a pilot project, which would involve taking charge of points relating to the cost of the project, its viability on how to deploy it through the continent and the choice of technology.
“The funding strategy is also a key success factor, of the project's business case. The Study would therefore be exploring the quantification of 3 key viability factors: the strategic equity and strategic debt required, as well as, the multiple revenue streams, to make the first 10-Year Implementation Plan, and the first country- regional pilot project viable, for implication by 2023,” Mr Deen added.
"In essence, we have a target to reach 20% network development by 2023; hence, we will working with "willing and ready" countries, and their respective regional economic communities, to define the first set of regional HSR pilot projects, Mr Deen further said. "Starting in 2018, we can have a clearer idea of what we want," he added, “For which viable and solid decisions must be taken, allowing the project to move forward.”
