Oyo State governor, ‘Seyi Makinde, has declared that his administration will restructure the Alesinloye Market, Ibadan, to avert a recurrence of the fire incident that destroyed goods worth millions of Naira in March, reports ITREALMS.

The governor also said that the state government has provided some sort of palliatives to serve as an immediate cushion for the victims of the fire incident.

The Oyo State governor, ‘Seyi Makinde, has commiserated with traders, who lost properties to a fire outbreak, which destroyed shops and goods at the popular Aleshinloye Market in Ibadan, in the early hours of Wednesday.

The governor, who was represented by the Deputy Governor, Barr. Abdulraheem Bayo Lawal, expressed the government’s sympathy to the victims of the fire outbreak during an on-the-spot assessment of the incident.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has identified the cause of the weekend fire disaster along the ongoing reconstructed section of the East West Road in Rivers State, blaming tankers drivers who were jostling for space, reports ITREALMS.

The fire, ITREALMS gathered, consumed some five persons including a pregnant woman and 120 vehicles.

The Lagos State government has been called out to compensate traders at the Ladipo Auto Parts Market in Mushin Local Government Area of the state over the fire incident of Friday, 25 February, 2022, reports ITREALMS.

This call was made by a public analyst, Ozo (Engr) Patric Uwaezuoke Mba at the weekend, saying that as the bonafide Nigerians who pay their taxes and levies to the government especially of Lagos State, that they deserve some compensation including fire-fighting vehicles or facilities.

Catholic priest, Edmund Nwagbara, dies in fire outbreak @Nnewi – ITREALMS

A Catholic priest in charge of the St Peter Clavar Parish, Nnewichi, Nnewi, Rev Fr Edmund Nwagbara is dead, reports ITREALMS.

Fr. Edmund, ITREALMS gathered died during an early morning fire outbreak in his room which cut up with him on Saturday.

Confirming this, the Catholic Diocese of Nnewi through the Director of Communications, Fr Martin Onwudiwe told ITREALMS that Fr. Edmund died in the early morning fire in his apartment.

“Rev Fr Edmund Nwagbara was the parish priest of St Peter Clavar Parish, Nnewichi, Nnewi,” he said.

Fr. Onwudiwe also urged faithfuls to continue to pray for Fr. Edmund among the departed.

“May we continue to pray for his repose,” he concluded.

8 dead in Anambra Tanker fire - ITREALMS

An estimated eight persons were reportedly dead from the fire disaster in Amawbia, Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State, reports ITREALMS.

The fire was ignited following an accident involving a fuel carrying tanker some three metres away from the Government House Lodge in Amawbia on Saturday night.
Also, the News Express reported that the inferno burnt most of the vehicles parked around the scene of the accident, even as on-coming vehicles were hurriedly diverted to take other routes.

The full extent of the damage caused by the accident was yet to be ascertained as at the time of filing this report.

‘Nigeria schools deliberately set on fire’ - ITREALMS

An estimated 20 per cent of Nigerian schools are deliberately set on fire, says the latest United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) reports ITREALMS.

According to the Global Education Monitoring (GEM) Report summary made available to ITREALMS, UN noted that out of the estimated 260 school sites in Nigeria’s north-east, 20 per cent had been deliberately set on fire, which amounts to some 52 schools.

The report endorsed by chair  of GEM Hon. Helen Clark also reported that 28 per cent had been damaged by bullets, shells or shrapnel, 32 per cent had been looted and 29 per cent were in close proximity to armed groups or military.

ITREALMS also gathered that there are 19.9 million refugees under the protection of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), of whom about 52 per cent are under 18.

 “Around 39 per cent of refugees live in managed, self-settled or transit camps or collective centres, mostly in sub-Saharan Africa. The majority of the rest live in individual accommodation in urban areas,” part of the summary showed.

The GEM summary which is on migration, displacement and education has as theme: Building Bridges, Not walls; showed that in many conflict-affected countries, internal displacement has strained already struggling education systems.

The report further posited that education has a role in preventing violent extremism, pointing out that whereas violent extremism, terrorist attacks and state and non-state civilian targeting undoubtedly directly cause migration and displacement, public opinion in high income countries has come to overemphasize the reverse, associating migration with terrorism.

“Yet any such relationship is very tenuous; attacks by foreigners represent a fraction of those by nationals and pathways to radicalization can take numerous forms. Preventing the emergence of extremism is a key line of defence against terrorism.

“Extremists tend to instrumentalize development challenges or exacerbate them to create and exploit a vicious circle of marginalization, particularly affecting the poorest and most vulnerable. By promoting respect for diversity, peace and economic advancement, education can be a buffer against radicalization.

“Violent extremists often see education as a threat and target schools for attacks, as with the Boko Haram attacks in Nigeria,” the GEM report stated.

ICANN57: Fire @Hyderabad bound cargo ship

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Number (ICANN 57) public meeting may have suffered a setback as the Hyderabad-bound cargo ship carrying hi-tech equipment belonging to the organisation were affected in a fire incident, reports ITRealms.

ICANN public meetings, ITRealms notes are usually a large-scale technical event, which include the visible parts like microphones, monitors and cameras are the tip of an iceberg.

According to sources close to ICANN, beneath the surface, there are miles of cable and hundreds of pieces of equipment providing connectivity, and enabling engagement and the seamless presentation of ICANN sessions.

“Unfortunately, some of our equipment was recently impacted by a fire,” ICANN source told ITRealms, stressing that “Our Public Meeting technical equipment was on board. We had two containers - a 40-foot and a 20-foot container.”

ITRealms recalls that on 1 September 2016, an explosion caused a fire on a cargo ship docked in Hamburg, Germany.

In addition, ITRealms reports that it took 150 firefighters four days to extinguish the fire, even as the ship crew initially tried to extinguish the fire and sustained slight injuries.

“No one else was hurt,” our source said, pointing out that reports indicated that welding in the cargo hold caused the accident.

The ship had departed Helsinki, Finland, after ICANN56 and the equipment was bound for Hyderabad, India via Mumbai.

Edo Council Secretariat destroyed by fire

The Esan north-east local government area secretariat in Edo State, was consumed by fire in the late hours of Friday, ITRealms reports.

This, ITRealms gathered, happened just few hours after 10 councilors passed a vote of no confidence on the chairman, Hon. Sam Oboh.

Also, ITRealms gathered that Mr. Oboh was said to have ignored numerous invitations by the lawmakers to appear before them to explain alleged financial recklessness and flagrant abuse of due process in the running of the secretariat. Amongst the chairman’s alleged offences included collection of gratuity while still in office, collection of internally generated revenue (IGR) up front to 2020, diversion of compensation meant for traders whose shops were burnt and the collection of over-draft from banks without legislative approval.

A signed resolution by the entire members of the house dated May 26, 2016, with ref No: ENE/C/168 addressed to the executive chairman reads in part:“It would be recalled that the house has been watching your activities for some time now and how you have continually manipulated the internally generated revenue of the council for your personal aggrandizement and as a result hereby passes a vote of no confidence on you.”
