Indolent labour union and matters arising by Hassan Gimba - ITREALMS

Commentary@ITREALMS ... making leadership SENSE with digital news!

For the past four years, I have been insisting that our problem and even need now is not about salary increment but about being a productive nation that produces what it needs and uses what it produces. This would galvanise our economy and strengthen the naira. With a strong currency, ₦30,000 is more than enough as a basic salary. Just imagine the naira to be equal to the dollar and there was a time when ₦60 was equal to $100. Here I have reproduced an old writeup on this topic.
There is no Nigerian that will tell you he is not aware of the NLC even if he does not know that it is an acronym for the Nigeria Labour Congress. What the average Nigerian knows about them is that they always go on strike at the drop of a hat, strikes that have lost their meaning because they always achieve almost nothing.

NEPAD now African Union Development Agency – ITREALMS Online

African Union (AU) has renamed the NEPAD Planning and Coordination Agency into the African Union Development Agency (AUDA), reports ITRealms.

This follows the outcome of the recent 31st Ordinary Session of the Assembly of African Union Heads of State and Government in Nouakchott, Mauritania, which saw African Heads of State and Government receiving several reports, including the status of the implementation of the AU Institutional Reforms presented by President Paul Kagame of Rwanda. President Kagame is the current chair of the African Union and the champion for the AU Institutional Reforms process.

Also, the Assembly approved the establishment of African Union Development Agency as the technical body of the African Union with its own legal identity, defined by its own statute.  The statue will be developed and presented for adoption at the next AU Summit in January 2019.

The Assembly commended the leadership of Senegalese President, H.E Macky Sall, current Chairperson of the NEPAD Heads of State and Government Orientation Committee, for reinforcing the credibility of NEPAD that has been acknowledged in the international community, including the G20 and the G7.

The current reforms at the AU are an affirmation by member states of their commitment to the NEPAD Agency as the Union’s own instrument established to champion catalytic support to countries and regional bodies in advancing the implementation of the continent’s development vision – as articulated in the seven aspirations and 20 goals of Agenda 2063.

Dr Ibrahim Mayaki, CEO of the NEPAD Agency, stated that, “A core aspect of the current reforms is to streamline and improve effectiveness and efficiency in delivery in the implementation of AU decisions, policies and programmes across all AU organs and institutions. In this sense, as the NEPAD Agency is the technical implementation agency of the AU, one specific recommendation in the Kagame report is to transform it into the AU Development Agency. We are enthusiastic about this transformation, which will make it possible to deploy our programmes even more effectively in the service of our continent’s development.”

Nigeria ranks 52% in ICT growth, records 148m mobile lines – Omobola Johnson

Minister of Communication Technology, Mrs. Omobola Johnson, has at the 150th anniversary of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in Abuja, said that Nigeria now ranks 52 per cent in Africa’s total internet access and also records over 148 million connected mobile lines with a teledensity of about 97 per cent, reports ITRealms.

The Commtech Minister, who was represented by the Director, e-governance, Mr. Tope Folashedemi, ITRealms gathered admitted that the country was down in United Nations (UN) e-government development ranking, adding that today, the country has moved up in the ranking with a growth rate of 11 per cent in 2013 to 52 per cent in 2014, which is 29 per cent share of Africa’s total internet access.
This according to her is a welcome development, as Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is now being deployed in both the public and private sectors for effective service delivery.

Buttressing further on the impact of the ministry over the years, she revealed that the country had a combined fixed and mobile telephone subscription of over 400,000 lines since independence in 1960, but in just 14 years after the licensing of the mobile operators, it recorded over 148 million connected lines with a teledensity of about 97 per cent.

“In the past four years, the country has witnessed changes or innovations in the way we conduct or transact business in many sectors of our economy. For example, with the deployment of the electronic (e-wallet) system, Nigerian farmers are now able to make payments for subsidized farm inputs through their mobile phones,” she stated.

She also explained that government was planning to get all its cities connected to the internet through its broadband initiative, adding that already, many state governments are keying into its national broadband plan, which is to make broadband ubiquitous across the country in no distant future.
Mrs. Johnson  stressed  that this will enable operators deploy broadband services across the country, adding that there is ongoing collaboration between government and the private sector for the expansion of fiber optic infrastructure across the country.

ITRealms further gathered that the ministry, according to Johnson, had implemented the Government Service Portal (GSP) and the Government Contact Centre (GCC) to enable citizens and other stakeholders have access to government services that are provided by the various Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) through a single window technology.

Use of CBT in Secondary Schools improper, says Lagos NUT

 ITRealms

The introduction of Computer-Based Test (CBT) in secondary schools has been crticised by the Lagos chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), ITRealms reports.

The state NUT Chairman, Mr. Segun Raheem, made this known in Lagos recently while addressing newsmen, and said  that the Computer-Based Test is sure to encounter hitches  because most of the students were not adequately prepared for the test

He also said the non-availability of Information Communication Technology (ICT) facilities and human resources make the NUT unprepared, adding "Computer Science has just been introduced to secondary schools as a compulsory subject which is coming rather late."

Further, ITRealms gathered, he said that only a few Lagos schools have computer science teachers and some schools gave temporary appointment to computer science teachers. Others got the teachers through the efforts of the Parents' Forum (PF)." The unionist noted that most of the secondary schools in the state had a desktop or a laptop which they used mostly for administrative work.

He noted that a few schools have ICT laboratories with internet facilities, asserting "With the present situation, in my own view, I doubt if the use of CBT is result-oriented for students in secondary schools in the state."

"Except if crash programmes on computer studies and practice is introduced in schools, which must allow each student to have a free practice with computer, CBT will not achieve the desired aim,
ITRealms learnt.

Lagos students join xenophobia protest, threatens showdown with South African investments

The University of Lagos Students’ Union (ULSU) has threatened to boycott all South African products if the barbaric massacre of innocent souls are not stopped by close of work today, Tuesday, April 21, 2015, reports ITRealms.

President, ULSU, Comrade Abiodun Martins, made this disclosure after the protests in Lagos on Monday on the xenophobia attacks on Nigerians in South Africa. He condemned the attacks wondering if this is how they (South Africans) want to pay Nigerians back for all the fight both economically and psychologically against apartheid.

Martins also said that ULSU will ensure all South African products are boycotted on or before Tuesday, 21st of April, 2015 if the barbaric massacre is not brought to a halt.
“We will ensure there will be no shopping at SHOPRITE, Pick n Pay, Spar, Steers, Debonairs, Hungry Lion, Mr Price, Woolworths or any shop that is a South African investment,” he warned, stressing that Nigerians will also be sensitized not to pay for a new subscription on DSTV, GOTV, make any recharge on MTN lines or purchase any new product from MTN.

ULSU, he told ITRealms condemned in strong terms the on-going xenophobic attacks on Nigerians and Africans in South Africa as it is a breach of human rights as established by the South African constitution.

According to him, social cohesion is a guarantee for success and development thus immigrants should not be seen as enemies of progress. Noting that Nigeria and Nigerians in the last four decades has been supportive in helping South Africa fight Apartheid and other social injustice such as racism and rape issues.

“South Africans owe everything they have today to the resolve of Africans to liberate their brethren from the putrid shackles of Apartheid! This is how they pay us back? How many South Africans were educated and sheltered? Without the material, financial and emotional solidarity of African governments, could the ANC struggle have gotten anywhere? Is South Africa suffering from Amnesia? How so soon have they forgotten the over $61billion injected into their economy during the Anti-apartheid struggle?” he lamented.

ULSU, he said, totally condemns the life loss and public disturbance in the last four days as this is unworthy of the human race. “No amount of economic hardship and discontent can ever justify the criminal activities that characterize these attacks. Justice must be done” he said.

As it stands now, South Africa is one monument of ingratitude and the government and people of South Africa must take all steps to change this perception or suffer dire consequences.

ULSU further called on all Nigerians to join the struggle as this is “our war and it must be won” insisting that an injury to one is an injury to all.
