Chief Adebanjo is a respected leader of the pan-Yoruba group, Afenifere and an outspoken elder statesman, who died on February 14, 2025, at his home in Lekki, Lagos.

The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kayode Ariwoola; Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State; Senior Advocates of Nigeria, led by Chief Folake Solanke; lawyers; Judges of various courts; as well as associates on Monday converged on the premises of the Oyo State High Court, Ring Road, Ibadan, pouring encomiums and tributes on late Justice Adegboye Ayinla Gbolagunte, who died on June 24, 2024 at 64.

Justice Gbolagunte, of the Oyo State Judiciary, is survived by his widow, Wuraola Ayoola, and three children.

The United Bank of Africa (UBA) Plc in Nigeria has been ordered to pay its customer N8,000,000 only for gross violation of her right to data privacy in a matter funded by Paradigm Initiative (PIN) through its digital rights reporting platform Ripoti, reports ITREALMS.

The bank was found liable for unilaterally opening a domiciliary account for Miss Folashade Molehin without her consent, breaching her right to data privacy.

The chief executive officer of Kontemporary Konsulting and founder, Africa ICT Alliance (AfICTA), Dr Jimson Olufuye, has called on African policy makers to pay attention to core values to engender critical development for the continent, reports ITREALMS.

Speaking at the just concluded Africa Geospartial Data and Internet Conference in Accra, Ghana on Internet Governance for all round Development (IG4D), Olufuye said that shaping the Africa’s digital future requires that policy makers should pay serious attention to some core values such that geospatial among other developmental data to pave ways for open and transparency society.

This, he also said would obviously make access for innovation and creativity to thrive for the continuous growth and development of African economies.

“And for more jobs to be created for our large youth population,” he said.

By paying attention to policy making, Olufuye, who is one of the five global business representatives to the United Nations Commission for Science and Technology for Development Working Group on Enhanced Cooperation (WGEC 1.0 & 2.0) pointed out that it will propel the realization of the Sustainable Development Goals on the continent of Africa and bridge the digital divide.

On what is the nexus of geospatial data, the Internet Governance and the SDGs, Olufuye emphasized that geospatial data has everything to do with cadastral information of a country.

“It is a major national resource data which has the potential if well managed to be the fulcrum of prosperity of any nation,” he said.

Olufuye, who equally is the immediate past chair AfICTA, said that with available Internet tools, this resource could be better managed in an open, transparent and accountable manner for the benefit of the people.

“So, the nexus of geospatial data and Internet Governance is the values that drive them to enable benefits for all,” he said, stressing that these values include openness, transparency, inclusivity, collaboration, effectiveness, sustainability, responsiveness, peace, trust to name a few.

With the holistic use of geospatial data engendered by Internet Governance principles, he said, it would be possible that citizens could derive better values for their land thereby boosting their purchasing power with the attendant eradication of poverty, hunger, ill-health, illiteracy, gender inequality, and clean water and sanitation would be available.

“Goal 15: Life on Land and goal 17: Stronger stakeholder Partnership are benefits that would also result in proactive geospatial data governance,” he submitted.

Fair pay ethics: Age a defining factor - PwC

The latest report on ‘The ethics of pay in a fair society: what do executives think’ has shown that age has a lot to do around with fair pay in a society, reports ITRealms.

According to PwC’s latest survey and report, there is a significant inter-generational difference of opinion when it comes to fair pay and what constitutes ethical behaviour around pay, with the younger population wanting stronger protection for the less well-off, compared to the older generation who are more likely to put faith in the effectiveness of market outcomes to create a fairer society.

The analysis, ITRealms gathered was completed in partnership with the London School of Economics, included a survey of 1,123 executives around the world, which showed that the data is remarkably consistent across a range of demographic factors such as gender, territory and earnings level.

In addition, the study says, age was one significant differentiator, with those under 40 who were surveyed far more likely to believe that distribution of wealth should lead to moral outcomes, with all members of society receiving an income that is sufficient for them to lead a dignified life.

By contrast, the over 50s believe talented people deserve to receive income in line with their contribution and that market efficiency is important in determining how income should be allocated.

For Advisory leader, PwC Nigeria, Dr Bert Odiaka, “Fairness is a morally and politically loaded term and means different things to different people. But questions about fairness, and the role companies have to play in this, are not going away any time soon.

Demographic factors generally do not predict attitudes to fairness. But the major exception to this is age, with our survey revealing almost 50% of over-65s identified themselves most strongly with pro-market principles, while less than a third of under 35s did the same.

Also, he said, the findings demonstrated that there is no single catch-all principle.

“Views of distributive justice are multidimensional and complex. There is much more to fairness than equality. Companies must therefore develop a much fuller narrative on what they mean by fairness and how they are delivering on that for employees, or risk the debate being hijacked by a one-dimensional view of fairness based on pay ratios,” Odiaka said.

Those surveyed, he pointed out, also did not subscribe to the view that the role of companies is to make money and of the state to redistribute it.

Instead, they thought that companies have a broadly equal responsibility in providing a fair pay structure among their employees. Companies are seen not to live outside of, but to be very much a part of, society and are expected to act justly.

But companies, as well as societies, are not always living up to people’s hopes of them. Typically a quarter to a third of people surveyed feel that companies are not delivering principles of fairness that they deem to be important.

For example, the principle around equal opportunity, where market competition is seen as fair game, so long as there is a level playing field, was the principle where there was the biggest gap between aspiration and reality. 40 per cent of respondents consider equal opportunity to be important but they did not consider the principle to be implemented in their society.

The Associate Director and Head People & Organisation PwC Nigeria, Olusola Adewole, said of the study that “There is a tricky balance to strike. Markets matter and companies that ignore the pay rates set by the market risk becoming uncompetitive in terms of cost or quality of talent. But at the same time, how companies operate across the developed world is being challenged, and will become more so as automation takes its course.

“Fair pay and the ethics behind it, is an important part of rebuilding trust in business. But there is also an opportunity to create a more engaged workforce with benefits for long-term value and productivity. Companies should therefore consider their perspectives on this debate and look to figure out exactly what fairness means for them.”

WorldRemit launches Android Pay, targets $600bn industry

The integration will make WorldRemit the only remittance provider offering international payments through Android Pay around the globe.

By connecting directly with Android Pay, WorldRemit customers can transfer money instantly across continents in just 5 taps - without entering credit card or 3DS details. Using mobile money, a recipient customer can then pay for school fees, utility bills and groceries among other things directly from their mobile phones - without the need for 3G or wifi. As Android Pay is supported by industry standard tokenization, payments are sent with a virtual account number providing an extra layer of security.

WorldRemit currently sends money to more mobile money accounts than any other operator in the world. The company enables migrants to send money from their smartphones to the mobile phones of the people they love, in over 140 countries to be paid out in cash, paid into a bank account or into a mobile money account.

“Currently 60% of WorldRemit app users are on Android, which is also by far the most popular mobile operating system in the developing world, where 2 billion people are still unbanked, but critically half a billion use their mobiles as a bank account,” she said.

The VP stressed that this integration with Android Pay is the next logical step of mobile first approach, and continues the commitment to provide greater financial inclusion.
