Health Care Concerns: Let us imagine there is a mega cyber cum digital security trap awaiting developing nations! Can your President and African Presidents in particular who receive health care delivery services outside their countries become a victim of intelligent microchip implant into their bodies as a way of hijacking the control of governance of a nation?
With Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT) and robotics, nothing is impossible! Simply defined, a human microchip implant is typically an integrated circuit device with identification and control capabilities. The above may therefore be classified as the mega Cybersecurity concern – when the president is digitally and remotely hijacked. The crisis situation and disaster recovery response certainly dwarfs what we know as cyber threat today! Can chip implant order a president to perform instructions he doesn’t want to perform?
When it comes to technologies, especially information and communications technology, health issues occupy a very sensitive high priority. In this era of intensive research in IoT and related embedded intelligent systems, developing nations should be concerned on the state of development, competence, capacities and capabilities of their Health Care sector, facilities and delivery systems. Thinking outside the box, if we agree that the digital workplace revolution is irreversible and leaves no avenue of escape for anyone – especially when it is now almost a done deal that AI and Robots will replace qualified teachers in a decade or so; then, it therefore becomes easy to reason that a combination of concealed microchip implant, AI and Robots can covertly takeover the President’s mind and governance of the unconscious and unprepared nation. Today, regime change is by force or arms. Tomorrow it may be via chip implant!
Chip technology and health issues have come a long way in the scientific research domain. Well documented studies reveal that the first experiments with Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) implant was carried out in 1998 by the British scientist Kevin Warwick. This intelligent chip implant was used to open doors, switch on lights, and cause verbal output within a building. RFID uses electromagnetic fields to automatically identify and track tags attached to objects. Without doubt, RFID has significant wide range uses to our lives and world. From digital library, health records management, aviation system tracking, supermarket product identification, credit cards and many more.
Also, according to Wiki, “on 16 March 2009 British scientist Mark Gasson had an advanced glass capsule RFID device surgically implanted into his left hand. In April 2010 Gasson's team demonstrated how a computer virus could wirelessly infect his implant and then be transmitted on to other systems. Gasson reasoned that with implanted technology the separation between man and machine can become theoretical because the technology can be perceived by the human as being a part of their body. Because of this development in our understanding of what constitutes our body and its boundaries he became credited as being the first human infected by a computer virus”.
Indeed, the national risk of the future of digital workplace takeover by external forces is not limited to the teaching, greater part of engineering, legal, aviation, agricultural and other critical professions but to those of human resources management, physical security, policy makers, leadership, etc. Engaging the emerging monumental challenges dictates that unless we retool the education and entire national workforce, massively invest in the software engineering, enthrone e-Government and knowledge workforce capacity building, we may be further surprised with a sudden eclipse of our efforts to deliver sustainable development. Education, health, digital and environmental infrastructure remains non-negotiable strategic imperatives.

As the IoT week event in ETSI came to an end last Friday, there was no doubt that the huge tractor in front of the building was the star of the week. But this wasn’t only for the size of its tyres…
The showcase was indeed a worldwide first: a tractor
connected to a car to mitigate the risk of collision on the road and bring down
the 400 fatal yearly car accidents caused by farm vehicles that are not visible
when coming into the road. Using ETSI’s ITS-G5 standard and the oneM2M gateway,
the use case demonstrated how standards help provide interoperability between
two sectors such as agriculture and automotive.
Other showcases proved how products based on the oneM2M
platform have evolved from prototypes to commercial applications over the last
5 years. Implemented in all parts of the world, they addressed such diverse
domains as smart cities, smart agriculture, automotive, smart home, smart
living, testing, smart body area, aquiculture or healthcare. There was also the
opportunity to test interoperability with interworking platforms or emerging
technologies such as Artificial Intelligence or blockchain. Large global
companies, SMEs, start-ups, R&D centres worked together to build up these
projects and put them on the market, showing the dynamic IoT ecosystem and how
the diversity of actors and expertise can be a real asset for industry at
large.
Developers were happy to go into details in a tutorial
dedicated to IoT applications and to build small projects with developers’ kits
provided to them. In parallel, security experts discussed the challenges for
IoT security and privacy. While the chair of the ETSI cybersecurity committee
gave a list of very similar issues to those found in desktop OS vulnerabilities
in the 90’s, he also gave a set of 3 main recommendations for IoT devices
security: no default passwords, implement a vulnerability disclosure policy and
keep software updated.
Smart cities was another hot topic of the event. It was
addressed through use cases, standardization challenges and first
implementations. As was outlined by the speakers, there is no ‘one size fits
all’ for cities as they have various needs including those for towns, islands
and rural areas which are different from large urban areas. If the cities’
priority is to solve societal issues, it’s a fact that interoperability of the
various types of data collected is crucial, but standards are then essential.
Some very positive feedback from commercial implementations
were presented. Bordeaux metropolis smart lighting in France was an example and
their goals were achieved: reduce energy consumption, optimize services
suggested for users by the metropolis and measure the impact of the deployment
of street-connected infrastructures. A few Irish cities are also deploying
several services. Other cities have implemented, or are going to implement,
valet parking, highway use, platooning or urban driving for instance, this
includes Livorno in Italy, Tampere in Finland, Versailles in France, Daejeon in
South Korea, Eindhoven in the Netherlands or Vigo in Spain.
This year, SmartBAN, smart body area network, was also a new
and very interesting topic. The use of wearables and body sensor devices is
rapidly growing in the Internet of Things (IoT). Addressing eHealth is of
course a technology challenge, you need to deal with interoperability in
heterogeneous use cases, low power, low latency, security, robust operation and
the ability to interact with embedded intelligence in smart environments.
ETSI’s technical committee on Smart BAN presented its work but other industry
players, including a prominent sportswear actor, offered technology solutions
and visions to solve these issues. Speakers concluded that SmartBAN can not
only provide connectivity for our portable and wearable devices in the IoT, but
it can also serve as the personal interface to the digital world, in particular
the healthcare system of the future. To do so, new solutions are needed both
technically and in terms of interoperability.

oneM2M welcomes Ireland, others as IoT accelerates - ITREALMS
The
global standards initiative for Machine-to-Machine technologies, oneM2M has welcomed the National Standards
Authority of Ireland (NSAI) and others into its fold, saying its membership has
continued to grow as Internet of Things (IoT) accelerates, reports ITREALMS.
oneM2M, ITREALMS gathered, covers requirements,
architecture, API specifications, security solutions and interoperability for
Machine-to-Machine (M2M) and IoT technologies.
This, ITREALMS reports that cybersecurity specialist,
research institutes, service providers and Ireland’s official standards
body are among the latest companies to
join the global Internet of Things (IoT) standards
initiative oneM2M as it evolve universal framework to empower mass
adoption of the IoT across a range of sectors.
The
newest additions to oneM2M’s vast membership which is made up of vendors,
operators and national bodies – highlights the wide relevance of oneM2M’s work
across the globe, with the new members coming from Canada, America, Europe and
Asia.
The
National Standards Authority of Ireland (NSAI) opted to join oneM2M as
part of the Irish Government’s strategy to prepare networks for the
digitalisation of key processes, including the future industrial revolution –
Industry 4.0.
“We
are joining oneM2M at a pivotal time as we have just kicked-off our standards
development programme for ‘IoT & Future Networks’ which will feed into the
Irish Government’s National Industry 4.0 Strategy,” said Geraldine Larkin,
Chief Executive of the NSAI. “Membership will give our experts the added
advantage of having access to and contributing to Technical Specifications
which are being created outside of the mainstream standards
organisations, as well as the opportunity to collaborate with industry and
research institutes from various backgrounds.”
oneM2M’s
common service layer can be embedded within hardware and
software to create a common language between IoT devices,
enabling vertical
interoperability, best-in-class security and interworking with
legacy IoT standards.
Friedhelm
Rodermund, Founder and Director at IOTECC, another company to join oneM2M
this year, said: “As a company which focuses on IoT standards
consulting, IOTECC joined oneM2M to understand how it
is evolving further to cover the needs of more and more
verticals, and how it enables interworking between oneM2M and a growing number
of IoT technologies and standards.”
LG
CNS, another new addition to oneM2M’s membership, has
recently launched INFioT, an international standard which is based on
oneM2M’s horizontal platform. LG CNS has also
embedded the oneM2M standard into its recently launched smart
city platform ‘Cityhub’ which collects and analyses data generated
and sent by various city infrastructures via IoT technology.
New
member CSEM will combine oneM2M’s platform with its
secured, low-power IoT solutions to create autonomous and optimised
interoperable platforms. GlenMartin will use its membership to
explore the launch of a secure data exchange for IoT data.
The companies
which have joined oneM2M since January 2018 include CSEM, GlenMartin,
IOTECC GmbH, LG CNS, National Standards Authority of Ireland
(NSAI), Telensa Limited and the University of Athens.
“This
year has seen a great increase in membership which highlights that as momentum
behind the global roll-out of the IoT gains pace, so too does the industry’s
standardisation efforts,” said Fran O’ Brien,
oneM2M’s Steering Committee Chairman. “This is leading to
an ever-growing number of companies recognising the importance of seamless
interoperability across all connectivity technologies as the foundation for a
valued, future-proof IoT platform. As more IoT devices and applications emerge,
this will only escalate and as a totally agnostic framework, we are confident
the growth in oneM2M members will also continue.”
oneM2M
will also address the adoption of the IoT at its Industry Day, which will be
held during IoT
Week Korea, on Friday, September 14, at the COEX
Convention Center, in Seoul, Korea.

MWC2017: Nokia leads in 5G, IoT and cloud for new markets
As the 2017 Mobile World Congress (MWC) kicks off in
Barcelona, Nokia has advanced plans to launch solutions covering Fifth
Generation (5G), the Internet of Things (IoT), software and cloud underscored
the breadth and strength of a product portfolio bolstered by the acquisition of
Alcatel-Lucent in 2016, reports ITRealms.
Nokia President and Chief Executive Officer, Rajeev Suri made
this disclosure saying that Nokia came to Mobile World Congress this year with
a bigger and fully end-to-end portfolio to sell, and with groundbreaking
innovations to share.
"All of this is underpinned by an organization squarely
focused on the execution of our strategy to lead in high-performance networks
with communication service providers, expand to new verticals, build a strong
standalone software business and create new business and licensing
opportunities in the consumer ecosystem," he said.
New products like 5G FIRST, announced today at the company's
press and analyst event in Barcelona, show Nokia's innovation strength to
deliver differentiated products that connect not only millions of users but
interconnect billions of things to create what Nokia calls the 'global nervous
system,' Suri said.

IDC foresees spending on IoT reach $7.8bn
The Internet of Things (IoT) market in the Middle
East and Africa (MEA) has been forecasted to defy the region's moderate
economic outlook by growing 19.6 per cent year-on-year in 2017 to total $7.8
billion, according to a recent update to the Worldwide Semiannual Internet of Things Spending Guide from
International Data Corporation (IDC), reports ITRealms.
Research analyst for
telecommunications, IoT, and digital media at IDC MEA, Mr. Wale Babalola,
disclosed this, noting that when compared favorably to the healthy 18.1 per
cent growth seen in 2016, the market's performance to the proliferation of
digital transformation initiatives across the region as businesses and
government entities strive to boost productivity and improve efficiency.
"The MEA IoT market is becoming increasingly competitive,
enabling organizations to source a range of innovative digital solutions aimed
at transforming business operations, improving the customer experience, and
enhancing employee engagement. Indeed, IoT now offers a myriad of
industry-specific solutions that can be easily deployed by organizations in a
bid to stay ahead of competition.
"IDC expects the manufacturing, transportation, and
utilities industries to see the highest levels of IoT-related spending in 2017
as organizations across these verticals look to digitalize their operations and
improve their value proposition across different lines of business. The
commitment of service providers, application developers, and OEMs to developing
purpose built end-to-end IoT solutions is serving as a major driver of the
growing adoption we are seeing across the region."
Manufacturing organizations will lead the way in 2017, with IDC
forecasting IoT-related spending of $1.3 billion for this vertical. The
'manufacturing operations' use case will account for more than 51% of this
investment. 'Manufacturing operations' is an IoT use case that supports
digitally-executed manufacturing and the way in which manufacturers use
intelligent and interconnected I/O (input output) tools (e.g., sensors,
actuators, drives, vision/video equipment) to enable different components in
the manufacturing field (e.g., machine tools, robots, conveyor belts) to
autonomously exchange information, trigger actions, and control each other
independently.
The transportation industry is also forecast to see IoT-related
spending of around $1.3 billion in 2017. The 'freight monitoring' use case is
expected to account for $849 million of this figure, which aptly highlights the
increasing importance of monitoring goods and improving productivity. The use
of IoT for freight management purposes (air, railroad, land, or sea) is based
on RFID, GPS, GPRS, and GIS technology to create intelligent,
internet-connected transportation systems. These systems perform intelligent
recognition, location, tracking, and monitoring of freight and cargo by
exchanging information and real-time communications via wireless, satellite,
and other channels.
IDC forecasts IoT-related spending by MEA utilities to reach
$918 million in 2017, with investments around 'smart grid' technologies to
account for more than 82% of this total. Smart grids are rapidly gaining
traction across the region as municipalities increasingly see the value
proposition in deploying related solutions in an effort to efficiently
distribute resources to their respective end customers.
"Numerous smart city projects are already underway across
the region, and the propagation of such initiatives will continue to fuel IoT
adoption by both public and private sector organizations," says Babalola.
"Saudi Arabia and the UAE are leading the charge when it comes to smart
cities, so it makes sense that these two countries will account for the highest
contributions to overall IoT investment in MEA during 2017, with a combined
value of more than $1.6 billion."
IDC's Worldwide Semiannual Internet of Things Spending Guide forecasts IoT revenues for 12
technologies and 47 use cases across 20 vertical industries in 8 regions and 52
countries.

HomeGrid President says certification critical for IoT interoperability success
The President of HomeGrid
Forum (HGF), Donna Yasay, has identified certification as critical for
Internet-of-Things (IoT) interoperability success, reports ITRealms.
Speaking at a panel of technology peers at IoT Tech Expo
in North America on how certification programmes are at the forefront of
interoperability, said it’s the answer for vendors looking to keep up with
today’s growing industry for smart home innovation.
“To ensure multi-vendor interoperability, accredited industry
certification programs should be used for every product to provide credibility
and quality assurance for retail and carrier based customers looking
to add ever increasing numbers of devices to the home network,” commented Yasay.
“The successful global adoption of the Internet of Things is dependent on a
robust and secure home network,” Yasay said.
IoT applications, Yasay said, typically use simple, low
bit-rate devices; hence the key requirements are in-home coverage, security and
auto-configuration.
Yasay also noted that however at the same time there is a
growing need for much faster in-home networks.
Buttressing her point with a recent iGR report,
she pointed out that it showed average monthly
broadband usage in the United States (US) homes is 190 gigabytes per month,
with more than 95 per cent of this traffic being video.
In addition, she said that Juniper Research recent study
which showed that 4K Over-The Top (OTT) adoption is set to rise from
2.3 million users globally this year, to 189 million by 2021.
This, she said, translates to 1 in 500 US residents currently
watching 4K online, but by 2021, it will be 1 in 10, a massive increase in
access and in-home bandwidth.
She further said that the beauty of G.hn is that it could
provide a single in-home network that meets the needs of both IoT applications
and ultrafast video.
“G.hn technology can provide seamless wired connectivity or a
backbone for multiple wireless access points and IoT devices to
greatly improve the wireless coverage within a home,” she explained.
Pointing out that today’s average household has advanced from
having one user watching the occasional video on YouTube, to several users
watching whole television series independently and simultaneously, using
platforms such as Amazon Video and Netflix.
“G.hn is now widely regarded as the obvious choice for reliably
delivering high bandwidth services and applications, and will increasingly be
used to help connect IoT devices. This can either be as a backbone
for low-speed wireless IoT technologies, or embedding the powerline
variant of G.hn in large, fixed, mains-powered devices such as washing machines
and refrigerators,” she said.
Therefore, interoperability, she said, is key to both these very
different applications, stressing that HomeGrid Forum thus provides G.hn
silicon and system certification through a strict compliance and
interoperability testing programme to ensure the simplest and most secure
means for consumers to connect their increasing number of devices and
applications using the home network.

MEA investment in IoT to reach $6.6
The International Data Corporation (IDC) latest forecast has
stated that organizations in the Middle East and Africa (MEA) will invest more
than $6.6 billion in Internet of Things (IoT) hardware, software, services, and
connectivity in 2016, reports ITRealms.
The global ICT consulting
and advisory services firm, disclosed this in an update to its Worldwide
Semiannual Internet of Things Spending Guide, expecting that IoT revenues in
the region to increase at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 21.3 per cent
over the next four years to total more than $14.3 billion in 2020.
IDC also stated that manufacturing and transportation are the
vertical industries leading the way in terms of IoT investment in MEA, with
both expected to spend an estimated $1.1 billion each in 2016. The next largest
industry, utilities, is expected to see IoT investments of almost $800 million
this year. The IoT use cases receiving the greatest levels of investment from
MEA organizations across these three industries are:
• Manufacturing Operations, which supports digitally-executed
manufacturing, or how manufacturers use intelligent and interconnected
input/output tools (sensors, actuators, drives, vision/video equipment etc.) to
enable different components in the manufacturing field (e.g. machine tools,
robots, conveyor belts) to autonomously exchange information, trigger actions,
and control each other independently.
• Freight Monitoring, which uses RFID, GPS, GPRS, and GIS
technologies to create an intelligent, Internet-connected transportation
system. This system carries out the intelligent recognition, location,
tracking, and monitoring of freight and cargo by exchanging information and
real-time communications via wireless, satellite, or other channels.
• Smart Grid (Electricity), where non-smart meter field devices
owned by the electric utility are used to control and optimize power flow to
ensure efficient, safe, and reliable service. The devices are used throughout
the electricity distribution grid for tasks such as line sensing, substation
automation, and feeder & line equipment control and optimization. Utility
owned in-home devices are included in this category when used for grid
operations.
IDC further said that by looking across all industries in the MEA region, freight
monitoring will receive the greatest level of IoT investment throughout the
forecast period, followed by smart grid (electricity) and manufacturing
operations. In addition to these use cases, remote health monitoring, smart
buildings, and smart home concepts will see significant levels of investment
over the next few years. The IoT use cases that will experience the greatest
revenue growth over the 2016–2020 forecast period are smart buildings,
insurance telematics, and smart grid (gas).
"IoT solution deployments across MEA will continue to see
increased adoption rates, both in the public and private sectors, as
stakeholders begin to realize an immediate return on their investments,"
says Wale Babalola, a research analyst for telecommunications, IoT, and digital
media at IDC Middle East, Africa, and Turkey. "In addition, the growing
development of purpose-built IoT platforms and the continuing proliferation of
smart devices will serve as catalysts for IoT adoption across the region's
industry spectrum."

terms of overall IoT investments in the MEA region, six industries will see IoT
spending levels increase by more than 100% over the 2016–2020 forecast period –
construction, consumer, insurance, manufacturing, retail, and
telecommunications. Cross-industry investments, which represent use cases
common to all industries, are also forecast to see revenues more than double
during this period.
"A use case represents a detailed composition of a
technology investment that is made to produce a set of end-user benefits,"
says Marcus Torchia, research manager for IoT within IDC's Customer Insights
and Analysis team. "The long-term opportunity for IoT vendors is helping
to identify and create immediate and residual benefits for end users through
their technologies. We see strong opportunities across many industries. For
example, in highly instrumented verticals like manufacturing and
transportation, large data sets are used to optimize operational processes and
extend the life of high-capital cost assets. In other sectors like healthcare
and consumer, IoT technology is being used to produce benefits that improve
quality of life."
The Worldwide Semiannual Internet of Things Spending Guide
forecasts IoT revenues for 12 technologies and 47 use cases across 20 vertical
industries in eight regions and 52 countries. Unlike any other research in the
industry, the comprehensive spending guide was designed to help vendors clearly
understand the industry-specific opportunity for IoT technologies today.

IEEE names Uwaje, Africa chair on publicity for IoT World 2016
New York-based Institute of Electrical and Electronics
Engineers (IEEE) has named the immediate past president of the Institute of
Software Practitioners of Nigeria (ISPON), Chief Chris Uwaje as its chair on
publicity and communication in Africa, for the forthcoming IEEE-Internet of
Things (IoT) World Forum 2016, reports ITRealms.
Disclosing this, Mr. Uwaje in a press statement made available
to ITRealms noted that the Internet of Things and Everything (IoTs/IoE)
represents perhaps the last hope for Africa’s 21st Century knowledge,
creativity and innovation renaissance.
This, he said, was in pursuant to resolutions at the last
meeting of the IEEE-WFIoT 2016 Organising Committee held on 9th March, 2016, where
“Chris Uwaje was appointed the Co-Chair for Publicity and Communications for
Africa.”
Uwaje’s mandate, ITRealms gathered includes but not limited
to promoting, propagating and advancing the aims and objective of the
IEEE-World Forum on Internet of Things, but above all, to establish innovative
programmes of ensuring the participation and contribution of the ICT Industry
leadership, government policy makers, IT Professionals and stakeholders in
Africa, to accelerate the diffusion, application and domestication of the
promise and opportunities of IoTs.
He also said that the forum with the theme: “Internet of
Things: Smart Innovation for Vibrant Ecosystem” he said, promises the
assemblage of best brains and leaders in academia, innovation, corporate
industry, technology business and government policy makers to discuss and map
the way forward and codify future opportunities and benefits of Internet of
Things and Everything (IoTs/IoE).
He equally stressed the imperative and strategic of having
Africa represented and actively contributes to the outcome of proceedings – as
the continent stands to benefit immensely from the conference, pointing out
that in order to achieve the quantum benefits from the emerging digital
opportunity, his vision is to take charge of promoting and establishing the
“Africa IoTs Pavilion” as strategic imperative for success at the WF-IoTs 2016
in the United States of America (USA).”
He told ITRealms that the 2016 IEEE 3rd World Forum on
Internet of Things (WF-IoT) – IoT: Smart Innovation for Vibrant Ecosystems is a
unique event for industry leaders, academics and decision making government
officials. IEEE WF-IOT 2016 will be held at the Hyatt Regency in Reston,
Virginia USA between 12 and 14 December, 2016.
Uwaje further said this event is designed to examine key
critical innovations across technologies which will alter the research and
application space of the future.
“The Internet of Things envisions a highly networked future,
where every object is integrated to interact with each other, allowing for
communications between objects, as well as between humans and objects, which
enables the control of intelligent systems in our daily lives. My appointment
as Africa Chair - Publicity and Communications for the 3rd World Forum on IoTs
2016 is a great challenge,” he said.
Uwaje, therefore solicited supports to deliver on this
mandate of reaching out to 500 Africa Universities and 1000 IT Industry leaders
cum players for submission of 2000 papers for consideration.
“I am sure that a well-researched paper from African
knowledge network has the pedigree for final selection. This will put Nigeria
and Africa in the Internet Protocol (IP) forefront of IoTs the digital World,”
he submitted.

Internet brought positive impact to Nigeria - Folayan
The
President of the Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NIRA) Engr. Sunday
Folayan, has said that the Internet of Things (IoT) has brought positive impact
on the country, reports ITRealms.
Speaking to ITRealms exclusively, Mr. Folayan noted that both IoT and next generation of
technologies would continue to make a positive impact on Nigerian businesses
and economy in general.
“… Just as
the Internet has brought a very positive impact to the nation,” he declared.
He recalled
that a Nigerian online store had reportedly last year, made impressive sales on
a boxing day alone, which was more than the annual sales of the average store
for the entire year.
This
development, he cited, is an example of the positive impact that the Internet
has brought to businesses in the country.
IoT, he
pointed out, would allow Nigerian businesses do more, with less human errors
and minimum manipulations.
Folayan
predicted that in the future, “our vehicles will report risky driving patterns
to the Insurance companies directly, so that good and decent drivers will get
better premiums directly, without anyone assessing them.”
For him, the
revolution has just started.
