oneM2M welcomes Ireland, others as IoT accelerates - ITREALMS

The global standards initiative for Machine-to-Machine technologies, oneM2M has welcomed the National Standards Authority of Ireland (NSAI) and others into its fold, saying its membership has continued to grow as Internet of Things (IoT) accelerates, reports ITREALMS.

oneM2M, ITREALMS gathered, covers requirements, architecture, API specifications, security solutions and interoperability for Machine-to-Machine (M2M) and IoT technologies.

This, ITREALMS reports that cybersecurity specialist, research institutes, service providers and Ireland’s official standards body are among the latest companies to join the global Internet of Things (IoT) standards initiative oneM2M as it evolve universal framework to empower mass adoption of the IoT across a range of sectors. 

The newest additions to oneM2M’s vast membership which is made up of vendors, operators and national bodies – highlights the wide relevance of oneM2M’s work across the globe, with the new members coming from Canada, America, Europe and Asia. 

The National Standards Authority of Ireland (NSAI) opted to join oneM2M as part of the Irish Government’s strategy to prepare networks for the digitalisation of key processes, including the future industrial revolution – Industry 4.0. 

“We are joining oneM2M at a pivotal time as we have just kicked-off our standards development programme for ‘IoT & Future Networks’ which will feed into the Irish Government’s National Industry 4.0 Strategy,” said Geraldine Larkin, Chief Executive of the NSAI. “Membership will give our experts the added advantage of having access to and contributing to Technical Specifications which are being created outside of the mainstream standards organisations, as well as the opportunity to collaborate with industry and research institutes from various backgrounds.”

oneM2M’s common service layer can be embedded within hardware and software to create a common language between IoT devices, enabling vertical interoperability, best-in-class security and interworking with legacy IoT standards.

Friedhelm Rodermund, Founder and Director at IOTECC, another company to join oneM2M this year, said: “As a company which focuses on IoT standards consulting, IOTECC joined oneM2M to understand how it is evolving further to cover the needs of more and more verticals, and how it enables interworking between oneM2M and a growing number of IoT technologies and standards.”

LG CNS, another new addition to oneM2M’s membership, has recently launched INFioT, an international standard which is based on oneM2M’s horizontal platform. LG CNS has also embedded the oneM2M standard into its recently launched smart city platform ‘Cityhub’ which collects and analyses data generated and sent by various city infrastructures via IoT technology.

New member CSEM will combine oneM2M’s platform with its secured, low-power IoT solutions to create autonomous and optimised interoperable platforms. GlenMartin will use its membership to explore the launch of a secure data exchange for IoT data.

The companies which have joined oneM2M since January 2018 include CSEM, GlenMartin, IOTECC GmbH, LG CNS, National Standards Authority of Ireland (NSAI), Telensa Limited and the University of Athens.

“This year has seen a great increase in membership which highlights that as momentum behind the global roll-out of the IoT gains pace, so too does the industry’s standardisation efforts,” said Fran O’ Brien, oneM2M’s Steering Committee Chairman. “This is leading to an ever-growing number of companies recognising the importance of seamless interoperability across all connectivity technologies as the foundation for a valued, future-proof IoT platform. As more IoT devices and applications emerge, this will only escalate and as a totally agnostic framework, we are confident the growth in oneM2M members will also continue.”

oneM2M will also address the adoption of the IoT at its Industry Day, which will be held during IoT Week Korea, on Friday, September 14, at the COEX Convention Center, in Seoul, Korea.

Pexip expands to UK & Ireland, 3 other countries

The Norway-based video conferencing software company, Pexip, has expanded reach to multiple regions United Kingdom and Ireland, Southern Europe, Brazil and Australia, reports ITRealms.

The chief executive officer and co-founder of Pexip, Simen Teigre, made this disclosure Thursday, saying the company added some staff in these markets. 

Expansions, he said, include the addition of John Harald Grønningen in Barcelona, Spain and the hiring of industry veterans Eddie Clifton for the UK & Ireland and Paulo Cardoso in Brazil. 

Also, he said, Pexip strengthened its presence in Australia through the addition of Mark Bedwani as senior sales engineer. 

"Increasing our team and expanding our capabilities are fundamental for supporting our growing customer base and partnerships across all regions. As organizations execute on strategies for improving their competitive advantage, our Infinity platform continues to grow in popularity as an enabler for efficient collaboration. It's fantastic to see such strong pick up of our platform, continuing to fuel the need for more resources to support our customers, partners and exponential growth,” Teigre said.

For the cofounder, Pexip's presence in Barcelona ensures local support for Spain, Portugal, France, Italy, and Greece is strengthening the company's support for customers and new and existing partners. 

This includes local companies such as Techno Trends — a leading visual collaboration company with offices in Barcelona and Madrid. Together, Pexip and Techno Trends have already led initiatives such as cosponsoring IDC's UC & Mobility conference held in Madrid. Pexip Southern Europe is headed by John Harald Grønningen who comes from NetCom, REC Solar, and Tandberg. 

Equally speaking, the CEO of Techno Trends, Ernest Companys, said the partnership with Pexip has rapidly grown into a major player within the unified communications marketplace. "Their Infinity solution lets workers collaborate face-to-face without leaving the familiarity of their current environment. This is important for users, enabling easy collaboration from virtually any device and client, and giving companies that competitive edge," he said.

In the UK & Ireland, Pexip welcomes industry veteran Eddie Clifton, who joins the company from strategic partner Viju Group. Based in Hurst, near London, Clifton's vast experience in the videoconferencing and collaboration industries includes strategic director positions for Cisco and Tandberg, and several years' experience in managing strategic accounts on a global level, among others.

ICANN 54 fellowship round now open

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has opened up the fellowship application for the 54 public meeting, slated to hold in Dublin, Ireland on October 2015, reports ITRealms.

Since its creation in 2007, ITRealms reports that the Fellowship Programme has built a strong group of individuals who are actively participating in all of the ICANN communities as well as various Internet Governance entities within the Internet ecosystem.

According to ICANN, the programme beneficiary’s engagement ranges from writing articles and blogs, providing online or in-person public comment in regard to bottom up policy building, engaging in Internet conferences and panel discussions, lifting a pen in working groups, mentoring newcomers, assisting the regional leaders and becoming leaders themselves.

ITRealms recalls that the ICANN Fellowship programmne seeks participants from developing countries of the world in order to help create a broader base of knowledgeable constituents to engage in the Multistakeholder process and become the new voice of experience in their regions and beyond.

“Today, launches our latest application round where participants will join us at ICANN 54 in Dublin, Ireland this coming October,” ICANN officials confirmed.

This round, ITRealms gathered would remained open until 15 May 2015 and successful candidates will be announced on the ICANN website, 10 July 2015.

Ireland: War on tobacco worthy, but must not be rushed

IT was not so long ago that secondary school children were allowed to smoke in many of the more "advanced" schools around the country. Staff rooms were also often full of teachers puffing on pipes and cigarettes as pupils regularly entered and left.

Today, the idea of a 17-year-old taking a puff between classes seems as strange as quill pens or the regular floggings that were a feature of the Irish educational system for far too long. The world changes, and smokers have had to endure more change than most as their habit has moved from socially acceptable to pariah status.

The Government's latest plans to outlaw smoking anywhere in secondary school grounds and near creche facilities is another step in a long-term strategy to "de-normalise" smoking and ensure that fewer than one person in 20 smokes by 2025.

That is a noble objective, but like many others it is one to be pursued carefully.

The prohibition of alcohol in the United States during the 1920s did little more than cement the position of criminal gangs, and serves as a salutary warning. There is already plenty of evidence that high taxes in Ireland are a boon for crooks while also turning many otherwise law-abiding citizens into criminals.

There is also the question of equity. Many ordinary smokers deeply resent their outlaw status and insist, not without reason, that their behaviour is likely to be less lethal to others than speeding drivers or alcohol.

That is all true, but the truth is that most smokers wish they could kick the habit, and hundreds of thousands of smokers have done just that thanks to the policy of de-normalising smoking. The gradual escalation of this policy will undoubtedly save more people from premature death while also saving them money.

Health Minister James Reilly has had a mixed tenure in office, but he cannot be faulted for his commitment to fighting tobacco and the tobacco industry. He must now set himself measurable targets so he knows whether he really is on track with this grand ambition.
