NIRA awards Galaxy Backbone 2016 Best Hosting Company
Leading Information and Communication Technology (ICT)
infrastructure and services provider, Galaxy Backbone Ltd, has been awarded the
Best Hosting Company in Nigeria at the 2016 .ng Web Awards by Nigeria Internet
Registration Association (NIRA). NIRA are managers of the country’s Internet real estate, reports
ITRealms.
The award aims to
continuously encourage the growth of local website hosting companies in
Nigeria. To qualify for this category, content must be hosted in Nigeria. Galaxy Backbone alongside 3 others namely; .ng (Upperlink Limited); .com.ng (Galaxy
backbone Limited); and .com.ng (MTN) were assessed by the Award Jury as fulfilling the criteria.
The winner was determined by the number of votes received. The
organizers had advised nominated organizations to reach out to their employees,
customers, friends and fans to vote for them. According to the letter of
notification, the more votes received by an organization the better the chances
of emerging winner in this category.
“The strategic position taken by Galaxy Backbone Limited to register
and use the .ng domain name, demonstrates the organization’s commitment to
relate with the .ng online identity of Nigerians, Nigerian businesses, local
content and culture. This key to doing business within and outside Nigeria and
this qualifies Galaxy Backbone Ltd as an invaluable asset in this our historic
celebration of the .ng online identity, excellence and creativity” NIRA was
quoted in a press statement made available to ITRealms by Head, Stakeholder Management, Mr. Franklyn Ginger-Eke.
He also said that Galaxy Backbone Ltd handles the registration
of .ng top domain name in the Nigerian public sector.

Ike Nnamani joins NIRA Executive Board
The President and Chief Executive Officer of Medallion
Communications Limited, Engineer Ikechukwu Nnamani was Friday elected into the
Executive Board of the Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NIRA),
reports ITRealms.
His election came as part of the agenda for the 8th
Annual General Meeting (AGM) held at the NIRA House, Iponri-Lagos.
ITRealms recalls that Engr. Ike Nnamani runs Medalion, which is provides interconnect exchange services in Nigeria with customers cutting across the operators of the Global System for Mobile (GSM( communications, Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA), Fixed Line, Internet Service Providers (ISPs), and Value Added Service Providers (VAS).

ITRealms recalls that Engr. Ikechukwu Nnamani is the President/Chief
Executive Officer of Medallion Communications Limited, a company that strives
and carved out a niche in the Nigerian telecom industry as an authority in
interconnect exchange clearinghouse services.
Also, ITRealms reports that Medallion currently has 70
telecom operators in Nigeria as it customer including all the major Global System for Mobile (GSM) communication, Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA),
Fixed Line, Internet Service Providers (ISPs), and Value Added Service (VAS) Providers, as well as hosting site for the Nigerian Internet Registration Association (NIRA) domain servers as
well as a site for the Nigerian Internet Exchange Point. Several crucial
infrastructure providers, such as Google, International Gateway Providers among other also hosted at Medallion.
With over 15 years of core
telecom experience, ITRealms gathered that Engr. Nnamani is very active in promoting forward looking
industry policies for the growth of the telecom industry across Africa working
with both regulators as well as operators to achieve this goal.
He currently
acts as an Executive of the premier telecom body in Nigeria - the Association
of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON) where he is responsible for
coordinating the activities of the Licensed Telecommunication Operators in
Nigeria under the body.
Engr. Nnamani is also the Vice
Chairman of the Association of Interconnect Clearinghouse Operators of Nigeria,
the umbrella association of the Interconnect Clearinghouse service providers in
Nigeria.
He has also promoted the
establishment of Interconnect Clearinghouses in Africa, working recently with
the Ghanaian Telecom Regulator (NCA) in the creation of the Interconnect
Clearinghouse license in Ghana.
He is presently helping to ensure there is a
successful implementation of the license in the country. He is also active in
creating regulatory policies for seamless interconnection across West, East,
and South Africa sub regions.
Engr. Nnamani has extensive international experience having
worked as an optical systems engineer at Luxcore Networks Incorporated in
Atlanta Georgia, United States of America (USA). Whereas at Luxcore, Ike
Nnamani as he is fondly called, was part of the team that designed and led to the manufacturing of
Luxcore’s Semiconductor Waveguide Optical Regenerative Device (SWORD), the
acclaimed world’s first integrated photonic wavelength converter chip, which
ensures non-blocking of traffic flow in telecommunication networks.
Equally, Ike Nnamani played a key role in the design and
manufacture of Luxcore's LambdaXchange, another world’s first demonstrated
all-optical router, which won the best system award at the 2001 Optical Fiber
Conference at Anaheim, California.
In addition, Ike Nnamani as a researcher at the Design
Methodologies Laboratory, Tennessee State University, was deeply concerned in
the conceptualization, and design of a now patented Expanded Accommodation Tool
(EAT) used in the Joint Strike Force project by the United State Military;
which was executed on behalf of Boeing Aerospace in St Louis, Missouri.
Engr. Nnamani received numerous awards from Boeing Aerospace
for his contribution to the success of the project and went on to join forces
in designing and successfully test-run a prototype of Trident II submarine
umbilical retract mechanism used by the United States Navy’s Strategic
Ballistic Missiles Defense Programme, which earned him a United States Navy
plaque for outstanding work on the project.
Ike Nnamani’s work has been published in numerous
international publications including the Boeing Aerospace newsletter, and the
2002 Region XI technical journal of American Society of Mechanical Engineers
(ASME) International.

Honours for Uduma, CFA, Hassan @ NiRA Presidential Awards 2016
The event had two sets
of awards; the first was the .ng web awards while the other was the
Presidential awards. The .ng web awards recognised companies and institutions
that have effectively used the .ng domain over the years and have indirectly
helped to promote the Nigerian brand online.
The other set of awards
were given by the NiRA President to organisations and individuals that have
been committed to the development of the ICT industry in Nigeria. Mary Uduma,
erstwhile President of NIRA received the special recognition award for her
contributions to the growth of the .ng domain name ecosystem. Another
recipient, was Chukwuemeka Fred Agbata Jnr. (CFA), Presenter, Tech Trends on
Channels TV and Founder, Techsmart.ng, who received the NiRA Presidential Award
for Youth Development, an award that recognizes and encourages youths with a
combination of the best .ng website, best online local content and best use of
ICT and finally, Dr. Wunmi Hassan, who was recognised for her role in the
advancement of women in technology.
NiRA's ultimate goal is
to get more Nigerians to use the .ng domains because Nigeria currently has less
than 100,000 .ng domains while South Africa has over 1 million .co.za domains.
Winners of the .ng
competitions preceding the gala and awards night also received gifts from NiRA.

Galaxy Backbone nominated for .Ng Web awards, calls for votes
Leading Information
and Communications Technology (ICT) infrastructure and services provider, Galaxy
Backbone Ltd, has been nominated into
the finalists for the “Public Sector: Star Website Award” category of the .ng
Web Award by Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NIRA), reports
ITRealms.
The category, ITRealms gathered, recognizes websites/portals of a government agency that
provides best user experience and is doing business with .ng domain name.
Galaxy Backbone
alongside nine others including jamb.org.ng, WAEConline.org.ng, CAC.gov.ng,
NIMC.gov.ng, FIRS.gov.ng, Immigration.gov.ng, Galaxybackbone.com.ng and
Nigeriatradehub.gov.ng) was assessed by the Award Jury as fulfilling the

Craze for foreign products, hinders .ng growth - Uduma
ITRealms:
Mrs. Uduma made this call in Lagos at NIRA house while responding to media inquiries on the major challenge of the registry in the last decade as it marks 10 years, and said that the crave for foreign products against and above home grown alternatives has hinder the growth of .ng country code Top Level Domain (ccTLD).
Uduma who is now the Executive Secretary, Late Ndukwe Kalu Foundation, which was set up by NIRA also said that this crave has not helped the industry and a nation like Nigeria with over 180 million population, to still be recording .ng registration below a million.
She further urged Nigerians to embrace .ng to assist in boosting the economy and creating more jobs for the youth and cutting down on capital flight.

DNS, a revenue generator – NIRA President, Folayan
Speaking
in Lagos as part of programme for the 10th anniversary of NIRA
existence, Folayan said the DNS industry
is a revenue generator with abundant business opportunities in the .ng domain
industry.
He urged
Nigerians to embrace the noble act of promoting their businesses, culture, heritage
and economy online by promoting .ng by exploring the 56 accredited
registrars of NIRA for their engagement in the DNS business.
NIRA,
he also said, appreciates the role of the Nigerian media in projecting .ng and
communicating NIRA’s activities and equally has the press at heart.
He
hinted that the second ‘Media College’ event, for engaging the press, would
hold in the second quarter of 2016.
Encouraging
the press to register their individual .ng domain names and use it for various
websites, blogs and email activities to name a few.
ITRealms notes that NIRA is the registry for .ng Internet Domain Names which maintains
the database of registered names in the .ng country code Top Level Domain
(ccTLD) name space in the public interest of Nigeria and global internet
communities.
.ng
is the official ICANN assigned and approved ccTLD for Nigeria, which is
globally accepted and recognized.
Founded
on March 28, 2016, NiRA is a stakeholder-led organization, charged with the
management of the Nigeria's country code Top Level Domain Name (ccTLD), dot ng.
The
transfer of the appropriate management of this important National Resource was
coordinated by the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA)
on behalf of the Federal government of Nigeria. Stakeholders within Nigeria’s
Internet community participated in its formation. It was registered as an
Incorporated Trustee on February 9, 2007.
Even
as he said, NiRA adopted the 3-R model (Registry/Registrar/Registrant model) of
operation in the operation and management of the .ng ccTLD.

NIRA reels out plans for 10th anniversary, DNS Fair coming
The Nigeria
Internet Registration Association (NiRA) has reeled out plans to commemorate
its 10th year since establishment on March 28, 2006, including exhibition
for the Domain Name System (DNS) industry, reports ITRealms.
The
chairman, Board of Trustees (iBoT), Deacon Chima Onyekwere made this disclosure
in Lagos accompanied by some NIRA Executive Board members led by Rev. Sunday
Folayan, said that this exhibition would be mounted by NiRA accredited registrars,
resellers, web hosting companies and software developers and has been slated
for March 12, 2016 in Lagos.
Other
programmes for a decade anniversary comprise of a youth empowerment and wealth creation
programme, scheduled for March 19, 2016 with conferment of .ng Ambassadors,
launch of .ng Scouts programme, .ng Social Media activities, selfie contest and
climaxed with the climax with the .ng 10th Anniversary Gala and
Award Night on the 2nd of April 2016.
Onyekwere
recalls that when stakeholders within the Nigerian Internet industry got
together to adopt its constitution, under the stewardship of an Interim Board
of Trustees (iBoT) before an election was immediately conducted which saw to
the pioneer BOT led by Dr. Isaac Odeyemi as the Chairman.
The
BoT, he said, thereafter conducted elections for the pioneer Executive Board
(EBoD), with the late Engr Ndukwe Kalu emerging as the pioneer NIRA President.
“The
late Kalu was succeeded by Mrs Mary Uduma, our immediate Past President who
completed her term of office in 2015. The current President of NIRA is Reverend
Sunday Folayan,” he explained.
The
BOT chairman further said that the transfer of the appropriate management of
the .ng national resource was coordinated by the National Information
Technology Development Agency (NITDA) on behalf of the Federal government of
Nigeria.
Also
speaking, NIRA president, Rev. Folayan said they are passionate about local
content development and we believe that great ideas begin with a simple
inspiration and thereafter become stories that entertain, educate and capture
the imagination of the audience.
“With
our passion in mind, we will launch the NiRA .ng selfie and animation
competitions to create compelling local contents that inspire. We encourage
Nigerians to take advantage of the opportunities offered by these competitions,”
he said.

Internet brought positive impact to Nigeria - Folayan
The
President of the Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NIRA) Engr. Sunday
Folayan, has said that the Internet of Things (IoT) has brought positive impact
on the country, reports ITRealms.
Speaking to ITRealms exclusively, Mr. Folayan noted that both IoT and next generation of
technologies would continue to make a positive impact on Nigerian businesses
and economy in general.
“… Just as
the Internet has brought a very positive impact to the nation,” he declared.
He recalled
that a Nigerian online store had reportedly last year, made impressive sales on
a boxing day alone, which was more than the annual sales of the average store
for the entire year.
This
development, he cited, is an example of the positive impact that the Internet
has brought to businesses in the country.
IoT, he
pointed out, would allow Nigerian businesses do more, with less human errors
and minimum manipulations.
Folayan
predicted that in the future, “our vehicles will report risky driving patterns
to the Insurance companies directly, so that good and decent drivers will get
better premiums directly, without anyone assessing them.”
For him, the
revolution has just started.
