Christian Democratic Movement urges Christians to care about politics

The Christian Democratic Movement (CDM) has urged Nigerian Christians to join politics, obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and become card carrying members of any of the 68 registered political parties in the country, reports ITRealms.

Mr. Wole Adedoyin hinted this while launching two latest of CDM initiatives, the “Christian Leaders Alliance for Politics (CLAP)” and the “Center for Christian Democracy (CCD)” in Lagos recently.

According to him, the Christian world view provides a comprehensive understanding of reality. It speaks to all reads of life, including political engagement, infact, the Bible speaks about civil government and provides examples of faithful engagement.

“Politics have real-world implications for Christian evangelism, missions and preaching the gospel, Christians ought to engage the political process by leveraging their rightful authority, advocating for laws and policies that contribute to human flourishing.”

“Politics is one of the most important areas in which Christians demonstrate love to neighbor. Infact, how can Christians claim to care about others and not engage the arena that most profoundly shapes basic rights and freedoms? Caring for the hungry, thirsty, naked, sick and lonely is important.”

“Government plays a role in the work of God’s kingdom on earth. Good government encourages an environment conducive for people living peaceably, whereas bad government festers unrest and instability. Because of sin, the legitimate institution of government has, at times, been used illegitimately. However, numerous examples persist of Christians reasserting their influence and redeeming environment to promote good and restrain evil. “

“Christian witness in the public square contributes transcendent values about moral and ethical issues. Christian withdrawal opens a moral vacuum susceptible to influences that pressure government to move outside the purview designated by God. Politics affects government, shapes society and influences culture. Because of what Bible teaches and the inevitability of its effects on our culture, Christians must care about politics.”

Archbishop Alaba Job outlines virtues of good Christian

The Emeritus Archbishop of Ibadan Archdiocese, Archbishop Felix Alaba Job, has identified sincerity of heart filled with faith and endurance to do God’s will as necessary virtues of a good Christians to ensure eternal life in heaven, reports ITRealms.

This remark was made while recently facilitating the Annual Retreat to kick-start work by all the staff of the Catholic Secretariat ofNigeria (CSN) and other agencies of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN).

The two-day programme attended by all the workers of the agencies of the Bishops Conference from across the country, the Archbishop emeritus said retreat is a period of deep and sincere concentration and honest examination of what one has been, what one is at present and what one will want to be later, stressing that the Catholic Retreat is not the type of retreat politicians in the country started having of recent.

He premised his topic of the first lecture of the retreat reflecting on how the staff spent the past year, 2017 in the service of the Church and in relationship with their neighbours; asserting that when Christians come together like this for a retreat, “we should become an oasis of hearts.”

Christians, he said, have come not only on their own but as a body, hence should be oasis in the desert, the desert of the noise of the world that does not grow anything.

“A desert of hearts are people who have hearts and are ready to rub minds and hearts, listening to the music of angels and allowing themselves to be served by Christ and his Mother Mary. When you listen to the music of angels and you dance to the music, surely, Jesus and his mother will provide you with more, much more than you can request” he said.

Archbishop Job urged the workers to reflect and reexamine their consciences on how they have spent the past year in their various offices; and how they have discharged entrusted duties, as well as how they have related with their co-workers, the people they serve and their neighbours.

The retreat facilitator noted that great use of life is to spend it for really worthwhile pursuits on something that will outclass adding that this will propel how the New Year will be spent. His words: “doing the will of God makes us live forever. We are equal creatures of God, sanctified by the Blessed Trinity but with different responsibilities.”

70% of Christian books published in Nigeria have no ISBN

Christian literature is now playing major role of winning souls for Christ but some writers are not following the rules of the game. 70% of Christian writers today published without obtaining ISBN numbers. The National Library of Nigeria (NLN) doesn’t have records of their publications. 

Mr. Wole Adedoyin, the National President of the Association of Nigerian Christian Authors and Publishers (ANCAPS) made this known after a brief press conference on the 2017 edition of Nigerian Christian Literature Award (NCLA) held in Ibadan yesterday. 

The research recently carried out by our body showed that 70% of christian writers in the country published without obtaining ISBN and 50% of them don’t even know that the National Library of Nigeria (NLN) is the regulatory body for ISBN in the country.

According to Mr. Adedoyin “Christian writers are always in hurry to publish, some of them also believe they don’t need ISBN because they are not writing academic textbooks for schools and colleges.

Even Christian writers who published with ISBN erroneously obtained them from printers and not from the ISBN regulatory body (NLN). I think the National Library of Nigeria (NLN) branches across the country need to take their ISBN campaign to different religion organizations and bodies”.

 “NLN should now focus their beam light on religion organizations and denominations. They should sensitize and educate them on why they should obtain ISBN and where to get it from. Some printers and publishers are now awarding ISBN numbers as if they have the machines manufacturing the numbers at home, Adedoyin added.

National Coordinator of Nigerian Christian Literature Award however described a book without ISBN number or not obtained from the National Library of Nigeria (NLN) as illegal or unconstitutional publication.

Christian group belittles attacks in Saudi Arabia, United States

Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has belittled recent attacks in Saudi Arabia and United States, saying it totally condemned these sacrilegious acts and urged those behind such acts and other similar acts to desist from such because no good thing comes out of violence, reports ITRealms.

The newly elected President of CAN Rev. Dr. Samson 'Supo Ayokunle said that the recent terrorists mayhem unleashed near a mosque in Saudi Arabia, and United States, saying that nobody should be deceived into believing that doing violence in the name of God would attract any eternal reward.

Ayokunle who also is the President, Nigerian Baptist Convention, pointed out that violence and all acts of cruelty against humanity would end up in eternal condemnation and everlasting punishment.

“We therefore sympathize with all Muslims all over the world over this unfortunate development,” he said.

Similarly, CAN condemned the separate brutality of policemen in Minnesota and Louisiana against two African-Americans which led to their premature death. 

Much more, the reprisal attacks on and killing of the policemen who were protecting the people doing peaceful protest against the continuous killings of black people in America was condemnable, unjustifiable and totally irrational.

“Two wrongs can never make a right,” Ayokunle declared and enjoined the American government to take action to police brutality against all races in America because all lives matter.

The parliament must do something to control gun possession so as to avoid in the future senseless killings like these and make America safer.

“Finally, we sympathize with the families of those killed in the three incidents and the American government and pray for fortitude to bear the loss,” he prayed.

40-yr after: Usman Dan Fodio, Bayero Universities deny Christains access to erect churches – CBCN

The Catholic Bishops' Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) has lamented that after 40 years, the two universities in the north have persistently denied Christian access to erect a worshiping place in their campuses, reports ITRealms.

This revelation was made by President of CBCN, Bishop Ignatius Kaigama when he led his administrative members on courtesy call to President Muhammadu Buhari at State House, Abuja.

“We bring to your notice that sad enough, Christians are still unable to erect places of worship in Federal Universities in the northern states,” the bishops said.

Pointing out that after 40 years, the aforementioned two universities, for example, have out-rightly denied Christians access to lands already in the plans for the erection of Churches, in spite of their being so many mosques built by the university authorities.

They also noted that in some northern states, “it is such a herculean task for Christians to obtain certificates of occupancy to build Churches in some northern States. We urge you to kindly encourage State governments to kindly enforce the freedom of religion enshrined in our Constitution.
