Media titans mourn Dotun Oladipo: Tinubu, Sanwo-Olu pay tributes to late Eagle Online publisher - ITREALMS

Tributes have continued to pour in from across the nation following the sudden passing of veteran journalist, media titan, and Publisher of The Eagle Online, Mr. Dotun Oladipo, who died at the age of 56, reports ITREALMS.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, have led prominent leaders, professional bodies, and media executives in expressing deep grief over the loss of the former President of the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP).

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu expressed deep sadness over the sudden demise of the veteran political reporter and media entrepreneur.

He acknowledged Oladipo’s decades of dedicated service to political reporting and his pioneering contributions to digital media, noting that his career exemplified the vital role of journalism in strengthening democracy, informing citizens, and holding public officials accountable.

“Dotun Oladipo's death at the age of 56 is a painful loss to the Nigerian media community and to our nation. He was a committed journalist who devoted significant years of his life to informing the public and contributing to the development of our democracy.

“His contributions to political journalism and the digital media space will not be forgotten. I extend my heartfelt condolences to his family, colleagues in GOCOP, and friends. I pray that Almighty God will grant him eternal rest and give his loved ones the strength to bear this irreparable loss,” President Tinubu stated.

Reflecting on the painful news, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu described Oladipo’s passing as a rude shock and a heartbreaking moment for the state and the national media ecosystem.

In a condolence message signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Gboyega Akosile, the Governor extended sympathies to Oladipo’s family, the staff of Premium Eagle Media Limited, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), GOCOP, and the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE).

“The death of one of Nigeria’s prolific journalists, writers, and media entrepreneurs, Mr. Dotun Oladipo, is a significant loss to the media industry and Nigeria. He will be sorely missed. He made numerous positive impacts in his lifetime, contributing meaningfully to the growth of online journalism in Nigeria.

“Our purpose in life is not to live forever, but to create something that will outlive us, bearing in mind that it is not the length of life that matters, but the depth of life. Dotun led an exemplary life; a dutiful husband, a good father, and a brilliant professional who touched countless lives. May God grant his family and colleagues the strength to bear this loss,” Governor Sanwo-Olu stated.

ITREALMS recalled that Dotun Oladipo enjoyed a distinguished media career spanning nearly three decades. Before establishing The Eagle Online, he served as Political Editor at The Punch newspaper and worked with Nigerian Tribune, Nigerian Compass, and The Sun.

As GOCOP President from 2017 to 2021, Oladipo played a key role in raising standards for digital publishing in Nigeria. Funeral arrangements released by the family confirm a Service of Songs on Thursday, September 10, 2026, followed by the Burial Service on Friday, September 11, 2026, at Daystar Christian Centre headquarters, Ikeja, Lagos.
