The breakthrough service allows Airtel DRC subscribers equipped with compatible LTE smartphones to maintain seamless connectivity across non-terrestrial areas wherever they have a direct view of the sky, completely eliminating traditional mobile dead zones.
Powered by Starlink’s direct-to-cell constellation, which currently features over 650 operational satellites; the technology enables basic data applications, including WhatsApp messaging and standard SMS. Crucially, end users do not require specialized satellite gear, external antennas, or secondary devices.
This milestone follows the strategic partnership forged between Airtel Africa and SpaceX’s Starlink in December 2025, alongside successful field testing in Kenya in March 2026. DRC now stands as the flagship market pioneering the commercial rollout.
To access the service, Airtel DRC subscribers require a compatible Android LTE device and an active local data bundle (or data roaming enabled). Support for Apple iOS devices is slated for a future phase.

“The first-ever commercial launch of Starlink Mobile in Africa is a significant milestone for Airtel Africa through our strategic partnership with SpaceX. By combining Airtel’s terrestrial network with Starlink’s satellite constellation, we are extending essential connectivity beyond the boundaries of conventional mobile infrastructure. The DRC is leading this important development, and our experience here will guide the progressive expansion across our remaining markets, subject to regulatory approvals.”

The satellite-to-mobile capability is set to prove invaluable for key economic drivers and emergency responders operating off the grid, including:
Industrial & Logistics: Mining operations, cargo fleets, and remote supply chains.
Essential Public Services: Field health workers, agricultural networks, and rural educators.
Humanitarian & Relief: NGOs, disaster management teams, and emergency first responders.
Network Resilience: Serving as a crucial backup during natural disasters or terrestrial fiber cuts.
Eligible Airtel DRC subscribers can opt-in for a free 30-day trial period by registering through the MyAirtel App. International travelers visiting the DRC who activate an eligible Airtel SIM can also participate in the trial upon app setup.
Following the introductory period, access to Starlink Mobile will be seamlessly integrated into standard eligible Airtel data bundles.
