To fortify Nigeria's digital theater, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has officially inaugurated the Nigeria IPv6 Council, reports ITREALMS.
Executive Vice Chairman of the NCC, Dr. Aminu Maida, described the inauguration as a defining moment in Nigeria’s digital evolution.
He noted that the transition is a mechanical necessity as the global internet enters its next phase, driven by the rapid expansion of 5G networks, the Internet of Things (IoT), and Artificial Intelligence.
To bridge the 5% adoption divide currently, Nigeria’s IPv6 adoption rate, he said, stands at approximately five per cent; a stark contrast to the global average of over 40 per cent.
Dr. Maida emphasized that moving past the traditional shadows of legacy IPv4 infrastructure is critical, as the exhaustion of IPv4 resources continues to place increasing pressure on the country's connectivity goals.

By adopting IPv6, the country can provide the vast address space required for modern cloud computing and AI-driven applications that IPv4 simply cannot sustain.
The newly inaugurated Chairman of the Nigeria IPv6 Council, Muhammed Rudman, underscored the strategic importance of the council's mission.
Rudman noted that the council will act as a bridge-builder, ensuring that all stakeholders, from ISPs to government agencies, align their technical roadmaps.
"Our digital fate depends on our ability to transition seamlessly," Rudman stated.

Rudman noted that the council will act as a bridge-builder, ensuring that all stakeholders, from ISPs to government agencies, align their technical roadmaps.

He highlighted that the council's primary focus will be on removing the architectural gaps that have hindered adoption, providing the unblinking recording of progress needed to move Nigeria toward the global average.
