This follows a formal handover in Lagos on Monday, 223 entries for The Nigeria Prize for Literature 2026 have been transitioned to the Advisory Board and panel of judges, signaling the commencement of a rigorous search for the year’s most defining poetic voice.
This year’s volume reflects a robust outing for the Poetry category. While the submission count sits slightly below historical peak years, the figure remains fiercely competitive, demonstrating a sustained commitment from writers to participate in a coordinated national framework for literary excellence.

Speaking at the press conference, the General Manager, External Relations and Sustainable Development at NLNG, Dr. Sophia Horsfall (represented by Abdul Umar, Manager, Government Relations), described the handover as the start of an irreducible commitment to sound judgment.
"This marks the start of a process that demands attention, patience, and clarity," Dr. Horsfall stated. She noted that poetry, by its nature, demands a standard prerequisite of depth and precision. The expectations for the 2026 cycle are shaped by the high benchmark set in previous years, particularly the 2022 edition, whose winning work continues to resonate within the contemporary digital and literary theater.
