Metele killings: Defence Minister to visit Chad over Boko Haram attacks on soldiers
The Honorable Minister of Defence, retired Brig-Gen. Mansur Dan-Ali has
been scheduled to visit Chad this week to hold a bilateral meeting with his
Chadian counterpart General Daoud Yaya, owing to increased attacks and killings
of Nigerian soldiers by Boko Haram sect, reports ITREALMS.
Premium Times had reported
that a source in the Nigerian Army said that 153 others are yet to be accounted
for, even as on Monday, November 19, 2018, the terrorists invaded a military
base in Metele village, Guzamala local government area of Borno State. Villagers
also said that over 118 soldiers may have been killed in the attack.
Reacting the Public Relations officer to the Hon Minister of Defence, Colonel Tukur Gusau, said the visit is in continuation of consultations with Minister’s of Defence of Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) Troops contributing countries (TCC) which includes Cameroun, Chad, Niger, Nigeria and Benin Republic.
“It may be recalled the Hon Minister paid a similar visit to
Niger Republic in September 2018 during which he held a similar bilateral
discussion with his Nigerien counterpart,” he said.
The Minister's visit to Chad, Gusau said, will revolve around strengthening the operations of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) to enable it achieve its mandate of eliminating security threats and creating a safe and secure environment in its area of responsibility.

YWCA condemns killings in Plateau, tasks FG on improved security - ITREALMS Online
The Young Women’s
Christian Association of Nigeria (YWCA) has expressed concerns and agony
over the recent senseless attacks and bloodbath that occurred in Plateau State at
the weekend, describing it as sad and terrifying, reports ITRealms.

Ochiagha in her reaction, said that the worrisome situation now is that no day passes without news report of some killings by gunmen and
destruction of communities in the country.
“It is also worrisome that
there appear not to be known evidences of provocation for the unleashing of
these attacks and killings. We are quick to also state herein that even if
there be provocation of any sort, the offended should use legal means of
obtaining justice within the ambit of the law of the land,” she said.
The group also noted that
recent attacks in Plateau State resulted in the death of about 200 persons.
This is one attack, too many.
As an NGO with peace
building as one of our thematic issues she said, they unequivocally condemn
these attacks, killings and all forms of violence in whatever name “whether
religion and /or commerce.”
She insisted that it
is absolutely unacceptable to Nigerians.
“As it were, a lot of
women and young girls who we work for their empowerment and all round
development are directly and indirectly affected. Some have become widows,
suffering food crises, rendered homeless with education of the girls disrupted.
They called on the
Federal Government to review the country’s security architecture in order to
effectively secure the lives and property of Nigerians.
”This call is urgent
more than ever before. There is need to strengthen and overhaul the security
machinery of the nation to function proactively. The most vulnerable spots of
these attacks and the states are known to make our security be on alert at such
spots and prevent the attacks before they are unleashed. It is becoming hard to
believe that the Federal Government agrees with the constitutional provision
that security and welfare of citizens is the primary purpose of government. The
press assurances by government of being on top of the situation must translate
into visible practical actions,” YCWA said.

BCS condemns killings, sues for peace in Rivers
The Rivers State chapter of the Brotherhood of the Cross and Star (BCS) has condemned violence and incessant killings in the state, insisting that all is set for the hosting of the brethren ahead of this week’s ‘Lighting of Centenary Torch of the Ancient of Days’ holding in the state, reports ITRealms.
BCS Rivers State Administrator, Christ Ambassador Dagogo Obene who stated this while addressing newsmen in Port Harcourt, Monday, described the event as a highly spiritual exercise aimed at restoring peace in the state.
According to him, “Lighting of Centenary Torch of the Ancient of Days and Divine Anointing of the children of God in Rivers State is in commemoration of the physical manifestation of the Founder and Sustainer of Brotherhood of the Cross and Star, Leader Olumba Olumba Obu, about 100 years ago, specifically, since 30th December, 1918.”
“The lighting of the Centenary Torch of the Ancient of Days, a prelude to a year-long centenary celebration is scheduled for the 9th and 10th of June, 2018. Activities marking the centenary are scheduled for the whole of 2018, tagged ‘The Year of Leader Olumba Olumba Obu’. Grand Finale is billed for the 30th of December, 2018at the U. J. Esuene Stadium, Calabar, Cross River State.
Continuing, Dagogo explains: “whilst the lighting of the Centenary Torch is taking place Nation to Nation and State to State, the Torch of the Centenary will be received in Rivers State at the BCS Cathedral (Hqtrs), 125 Aggrey Road, Port Harcourt, Rivers State.”
Speaking on the purpose of the event, he stressed: “anointing of the children of God to prepare them adequately for the tasks ahead. Whoever witnesses the Light shall never experience darkness. The movement of the Torch sensitizes and mobilizes all children of God to attend the centenary celebration of the Divine Manifestation of Leader Olumba Olumba Obu.”
“A centenary Torch team shall arrive Port Harcourt on Thursday, 8th June, 2018, while the event holds on the 9th and 10th of June, 2018. It is a highly spiritual and power-packed event. Highlights of the event shall include: spiritual sealing of the children of God through divine anointing, purification through fasting, confession of sins and prayers, evangelism, visits to dignitaries, procession, lighting of the Centenary Torch of the Ancient of Days, among others.
On the benefits of the spiritual exercise to Rivers people, he stated: “the event marks the celebration of God in human form. The celebration shall witness great fortunes, spiritual emancipation of mankind universally, profound peace, prosperity, spiritual/physical elevation and satisfaction, among others.”
He however advised residents of the state to take advantage of the opportunity to enjoy God’s endless blessings, even as he enjoined all to participate for spiritual and physical emancipation.

2018 Children’s Day: MeCAM urges FG to stop killings in Nigeria, it compounds children nutrition status

Malnutrition (MeCAM Nigeria) has expressed concerns over the seemingly wanton killings on-going in some parts of the country, mostly by suspected terrorist-herdsmen
and urged the Federal Government (FG) to put a stop to it, because its effect

A press statement
endorsed by the Director, Outreach for MeCAM, Mrs. Julie Ekong, in
commemoration of the 2018 Children’s Day, MeCAM chairman, Mr. Remmy Nweke noted
that the destruction of farmlands and killings by the
terrorists-herdsmen have reduced the number of farmers; while some have been
killed, others have fled their farmlands.
The deaths have also left many children motherless,
aggravating the already low percentage of exclusive breast fed children in
Nigeria, which according to UNICEF stood at 15 per cent.
Conflicts and resulting mass displacement, he said, often
results in increased prevalence of acute malnutrition and mortality.
MeCAM, therefore calls on Federal Government to pay more
attention to children in Internally Displaced camps with a view to reducing
malnutrition and stunted growth through vitamin A supplementation.
Although MeCAM noted that Nigeria has made progress in
micronutrient deficiency, UNICEF says half of the children aged 6-59 months do
not receive Vitamin A supplementation. Whereas, some 11 million under age
children are said to be stunted especially in the North East and North West
part of the country, as well as the poorest sectors of the society.
MeCAM believes that this year’s theme ”Creating safe spaces
for children: Our collective responsibility,” is apt because intervention by
relevant authorities will lead to the protection of children and their mothers
which will translate to less crises and interruption in the lives of the
children that will aggravate malnutrition and stunted growth of children in the
country.
Children, MeCAM insisted have a right to life and food.

Jukuns carpet Army chief's defence of collusion in Taraba killings

The Jukun Development Association of Nigeria (JDAN) has
rejected in its entirety the report by a panel set up by the Nigerian Army to
probe allegation of collusion of Nigerian soldiers in the pogrom going on in
some parts of Taraba State, where Fulani herdsmen have allegedly been killing
farmers and innocent villagers, reports ITRealms.
At a press conference
in Ikoyi, Lagos, on Tuesday, JDAN National President Chief Bako Benjamin said
the panel's report, falls far short of expectations and can at best be
described as a shoddy job fit for the waste bin.
He lamented that rather than give hope of justice, to the
families of the innocent farmers and other villagers hacked down by the
herdsmen, the Army merely engaged in "empty rhetoric" of setting up
of panels to cleanse themselves of wrong doings, a practice, for which he said,
they are becoming notorious.
According to him, the Nigerian Army yet again missed another
opportunity to cleanse itself of allegations of gross abuse leveled against
them not only by Gen. Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma but by a number of other human
rights organisations including Amnesty International (AI).
“The Nigerian army panel did a very poor and unprofessional
job and wasted the opportunity to scribble their names in gold. The report is
unacceptable to Jukun people and therefore it is hereby rejected in its
entirety,” he said.
It was in response to the Chief of Army Staff, Tukur
Buratai’s remarks on the 10-member committee set up to probe former Defence
Minister Maj.-Gen Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma’s allegation of military’s
involvement in the pogrom going on in Taraba. Buratai had said there was no truth
in the allegations, urging the people to have confidence in the soldiers posted
to the area to defend them against the rampaging Fulani herdsmen.
He wondered why the
principal characters (Fulani herdsmen) accused of precipitating the crisis that
gave birth to General Danjuma's allegations was never mentioned in the report.
The panel, he further stated, almost completely avoided the
main subject of the matter which is the attacks and killing of farmers and
innocent villagers, but was addressing porous borders and past
misunderstandings between brothers in a deliberate attempt to stir up tempers
and portray Jukuns as historically troublesome.
“It is also curious
that the panel deliberately refused to use a single material out of the hundreds
of documented paper works, audio and video recordings of eye witnesses,
community leaders and youth groups with shocking and gruesome evidences of
ethnic cleansing and genocide in more than 20 villages across southern Taraba,”
he said.
Benjamin said Amnesty International’s claims and conclusions
against the Nigerian Army are not far-fetched. The Nigerian army must come to
terms with the enormous responsibility that rest on their shoulders to keep
this country united, it must also realise that it owes Nigerian citizens a duty
to be unbiased and thoroughly professional under a democratic government. It
must completely shun the temptation to play to the gallery.
According to him, Buratai’s defence has gone to confirm that
it is increasingly likely that the Nigerian Army does not know where to draw
the line between defending the nation and enforcing and controlling
indiscipline within its ranks.

Benue killings, invitation to civil war – Yaro
The
Benue State chairman of the ruling All Progressive Congress, APC, Comrade Abba
Yaro has described the massive killing of over 50 Benue people by the Fulani
herdsmen as an invitation for civil war, reports ITRealms.

press statement made available to ITRealms
in Abuja, Yaro decried the recent killings as an attempt to spark second civil
war in Nigeria, insisting that, it is clear case of ethnic cleansing around the
Benue Valley which must be stopped immediately.
While
calling on President Muhammadu Buhari to immediately call the Fulani to
order and as well direct security agents to fetch out the killers, he also
called on all Benue Sons and daughters, irrespective of Party affiliation to
rise in defense of Benue Community.
"This
is above Party politics, it is human lives, how can you kill a pregnant woman
and removed the unborn child yet slaughtered it? It is barbaric, unspeakable
and generally unpalatable".
Yaro
says the Anti Open Grazing Law in Benue is not targeted at any section of the
people but for the general security of Benue State, a measure against cattle
rustling and a solution to herders/farmers clash.
"The
implementation is ongoing and we are in support of our governor, we are not
deterred, the Anti Open Grazing Law has come to stay.
"Nigerians
should not see the killings as a Benue problem but National crisis, the absence
of peace in Benue is an absence of peace in Nigeria.
"We
must treat it as a national ethnic cleansing by the Fulanis and collectively
pressurize Mr President to put an end to it. If Boko Haram can be defeated,
IPOB stopped, Fulani killings can be stopped", he observed.
He
further call on the Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Buratai, the Interior Minister
Lt Gen Danbazau, the Director General of the Department of State Services
(DSS), Lawal Daura, the Inspector General of Police Ibrahim Idris to protect
Benue community or "we rise in self defence, which will amount to the
second civil war."
Yaro
emphasized that, "if the Fulanis are not called to order by the relevant
authorities to stop the ethnic cleansing, like the lawless Fulanis are doing,
Benue people shall take laws into their hands in selfdefense".

IPOB condemns Onitsha killings
The Supreme Council of Elders of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has
condemned the recent killings of some Biafrans who were on peaceful protest for
the Independence of Biafra in Onitsha, reports ITRealms.
In a petition to the Federal Government of Nigeria, IPOB in
a press statement made available to ITRealms endorsed by the Secretary-General,
Brig Gen Joe Achuzia (rtd) and Public Relations Officer, Eze Iheanyi Nwokenna,
said protesters were killed and massacred by the agents of the Nigerian
Government, the Defendants in the on-going case in Suit No FHC/OW/CS/192/2013
between Biafra and Nigeria in the Federal High Court Owerri.
IPOB quoted an eye-witness who survived the massacre who testified as follows: “As we were walking towards the bridge, giving people our flyers, we heard gunshots and people started falling down. That was when I realised they were shooting at us. Many of us ran for our lives, and when the sound of the gunshots subsided, we went back to help those that sustained serious bullet wounds. Three of our comrades were confirmed dead on the spot and over thirty people sustained serious wounds. This morning I woke up to hear that four more have died in the hospital”.

“We are surprised that the Defendants could exhibit such
barbaric and despicable act of human rights violation against the children of
the Claimants. We have noted that the children were misguided by the operators
of the pirate Radio Biafra into protesting on the street for secession of
Biafra without the approval of the Supreme Council of Elders of Indigenous
People of Biafra instead of following the due process of law for
self-determination going on in the Federal High Court Owerri,” they group said.
They also asserted strongly, that the Defendants had no right to take the laws into their hands and kill the children of the Claimants even if misguided by the Director of Radio Biafra whom we have ostracised from the Biafra Independence Movement.

“As the Governing Council constituting the Customary

Xenophobia attacks: Nigerians protest against MTN investment in Edo State
Correspondent
quoted Elombah.com as reporting that the group took to the street in display of
xenophobic grievances to MTN which brought about closure of businesses in the
process.
“The group were
seen protesting the lootings and killings of Nigerians and other African
citizens in South Africa, calling all Nigerians to boycott the products and
services of South African companies in Nigeria.
“Some of the protesters were seen carrying placards
that read:
“Nigerians
Boycott South African Companies”
“South
Africa Against Africa”
“South
Africa Can’t be Making From Us And Killing Us”, etc.
Some Nigerians, however, have shown apprehension
over the protest saying that it might throw more Nigerian employees in MTN into
the labour market considering that South Africans working in those outfits are
quite insignificant compared to their Nigerian counterparts.
