Growing girls in the country have been charged to prepare themselves for future careers that will be premised on the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) knowledge and expertise, reports ITREALMS.

Speaking at the International Girls in ICT event organised by eBusiness Life Communications Limited last Thursday, corporate organisations that gathered for the 12th edition of the year long campaign spoke on diverse expectations from the young girls, and how to position them for bridge the gender gap in the ICT career field.

The Director, Kendor Consulting, Mrs. Adora Ikwuemesi, has advised Nigerian youths especially undergraduates and fresh graduates to carefully build their careers beyond the certificates that they have acquired, reports ITREALMS,

Mrs. Ikwuemesi disclosed this at the 2019 Candle Career Conference themed: “Out of the Ordinary: The bedrock of an extraordinary career.” which held recently at the Civic Towers, Victoria Island, Lagos.

While delivering her presentation on “Understanding your career trajectory: Beyond a degree,” She shared lessons from her journey in pursuing her career.

The Kendor Consulting boss further stressed on the importance for undergraduates and fresh graduates to have a vision while choosing a career path as that was the only way to gain clarity on their careers.

According to her, “An extraordinary career requires an extraordinary investment. This is a key way to develop one’s self and remain valuable to any employer.”

Speaking in the same vein, Mr. Orimolade Oluwamuyemi, Regional Marketing and Communications Coordinator – MEA Philanthropies at Microsoft Nigeria pointed out that undergraduates and fresh graduates should be open to learning and unlearning.

Mr. Oluwamuyemi who spoke on the topic: “Key patterns of an extraordinary career” encouraged participants at the conference to always be ready to embrace change adding that “we are in a changing world.”

The event also featured other speakers in a panel session such as: Mr. Tochukwu Egesi, CEO, Innovation Corner; Mr. Samuel Akinlotan, Talent Acquisition Partner, Sterling Bank Plc and Miss. Ajoke Emekene, a Management Consultant.

A major highlight of the event was the presentation of gifts to some of the participants at the conference.

The Candle Career is founded as an employability and career hub called to tackle unemployment in Nigeria. The community is focused on up-skilling and increasing the pathways to success of undergraduates and fresh graduates to thrive wherever they find themselves.

MainOne aligns with global effort on women in ICT

Leading connectivity and data center solutions provider, MainOne, has aligned with the global campaign on girls and young women to deliberately choose careers in the growing information and communications technology (ICT) sector, reports ITRealms.

Marketing Manager, MainOne, Ms Jumoke Akande, made this call at the International Girls in ICT Day hosted by E-Business Life Communications Limited in Lagos, saying that there is currently a gender disparity in ICT jobs, and urged girls as well as women to pursue ICT-related careers in the burgeoning sector.

“We believe that improving the number of girls in ICT careers creates a more balanced and inclusive society. Therefore, it is important that we encourage girls to expand their horizons, to empower and enable them overcome whatever limiting mindsets and fears they might have regarding pursuing careers in ICT,” she said.

Emphasizing that MainOne’s support of initiatives aimed at encouraging technology careers for Nigerian girls aligns with the goal of the company to provide girls of all ages with support, mentorship and the motivation to pursue ICT-driven careers, eventually becoming active role models themselves to the next generation of girls.

“Our CEO, Ms. Opeke, is an ITU female role model and believes this cycle is necessary to create better opportunities for our girls and reverse the gender imbalance in technology,” Akande said.

The Chief Executive Officer, eBusiness Life Communications, Ufuoma Emuophedaro commended MainOne for its efforts in expediting digital literacy and called on other stakeholders to join hands to further invest in girls and young women by supporting the Girls in ICT campaign in addition to empowering them by offering them the confidence to pursue ICT studies and careers.

ITRealms recalls that the Girls in ICT Day, celebrated every year on the fourth Thursday in April, is an awareness-raising initiative designed to promote studies and careers in technology to a new generation of girls and young women with an interest in becoming ICT enthusiasts.

The theme for this year’s celebration was "Expanding Horizons and Changing Attitudes" and it was sponsored by MainOne along with other organizations and individuals. The event was attended by the representative of the Minister of Communications, representatives from IT companies and other industry stakeholders.
