International Day of the Girl Child is an international observance day affirmed by the United Nations. The Day was declared to raise awareness of issues facing girls internationally. These issues border on education, nutrition, child marriage, legal and medical rights. The Day of the Girl helps raise awareness, not only on the issues that girls face, but what is likely to happen when those problems are solved. For example, educating girls helps reduce the rate of child marriage, diseases, and helps strengthen the economy by helping girls have access to higher paying jobs. So the awareness is not only on the problems, but the eventual benefits when the challenges are resolved.

International Day of the Girl Child (Day of the Girl) is celebrated annually on October 11 to highlight issues concerning the gender inequality facing young girls. This year's theme is “The Power of the Adolescent Girl: Vision for 2030.”

According to the Chief Executive Officer of eBusiness Life Communication and convener of the event, Mrs. Ufuoma Emuophedaro: “Between inequities in secondary education to protection issues, adolescent girls are uniquely impacted and should benefit from targeted investments and programmes that address their distinct needs. Investing in adolescent girls can have a formidable ripple effect to create a better world by 2030.” She further called on corporate bodies and individuals to join the march towards highlighting the potentials and unique challenges of adolescent girls.

According to UNICEF (2017) there are 1.1 billion girls, who are a source of power, energy, and creativity and this year’s International Day of the Girl (IDG) on October 11 will mark the beginning of a year-long effort to spur global attention and action to the challenges and opportunities girls face in choosing careers.

The campaign also seeks to break the cycle of discrimination and violence and promotes the full and effective enjoyment of their human rights, and recognizing also that empowering girls requires their active participation in decision-making processes and the active support and engagement of their parents, legal guardians, families and care providers, as well as boys and men and the wider community.

The 2018 edition of the campaign, which seeks to position the girl-child for the future, is billed to hold on Thursday, October 11, 2018 and eBusiness Life Communications Limited, publishers of eBusiness Life magazine, a monthly consumer-centric ICT magazine, is billed to host this campaign in Nigeria.

The former UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon had said, "Equality for women and girls is not only a basic human right it is a social and economic imperative. Where women are educated and empowered, economies are more productive and strong. Where women are fully represented, societies are more peaceful and stable."

Expected guests at the event include the Deputy Governor, Lagos State, Dr. Idiat Oluranti Adebule; Lagos Commissioner for Women Affairs & Poverty Alleviation, Mrs. Lola Akande; CEO, Signal Alliance, Mrs. Adanma Onuegbu; Managing Director of MainOne Cable Company, Ms. Funke Opeke; Country Manager of Google Nigeria, Ms. Juliet Ehimuan-Chiazor; Chief Executive Officer of Customer Centricity, Mrs. Uloma Umeano, among other top executives.

Intel Corporation and Girl Rising Nigeria recently partnered on the International Day of the Girl Child, reports ITRealms.

The event which held at the Film House Cinema, Ado Bayero Mall in Kano, has the theme as “Girls’ Progress = Goals’ Progress: What Counts for Girls”.

ITRealms also gathered that the ceremony was organized in the framework of encouraging girls to see education as a “Must Have” with a goal to highlight the role of technology and the Internet as essential tools needed for leveraging all aspects of human endeavor in the current competitive dispensation.

In addition, ITRealms reports that the occasion brought together over 500 girls from schools across Kano, government officials, NGOs and partners working for the protection of child rights.

Convener of the event who doubles as the Country Manager of Girl Rising Nigeria, Maryam Tafida Bello, described the event as an avenue for girls in Kano and beyond to realize that they can achieve their dreams.

Stressing that people should bring meaningful change to Kano and the world by empowering girls through education.

“There are over 5 million girls out of school in Nigeria and most of these girls are in the northern part of the country. We cannot sit back and watch, we must do something. We must take the baton to lead the fight in ensuring that all girls, all children are educated. That is why we are here today”, Maryam said.

Speaking at the event, Corporate Affairs Manager, Intel Corporation, Babatunde Akinola mentioned how Intel is making efforts in several ways to encourage women and young girls to be technologically motivated, especially through the Company’s ‘She Will Connect’ initiative.

“Women do 60 per cent of world’s work, produce 50 per cent of food, and yet earn 10 per cent of income and own only 1 per cent asset”. Intel will continue to work with NGOs and other well-meaning organizations under the She Will Connect umbrella to enable, empower and connect girls and women to opportunities and consequently put an end to such gender gap” he said.

On the partnership, Akinola reiterated Intel’s commitment to the development of the girl child.

He stressed that the company elected to partner with Girl Rising to celebrate the International Day of the Girl Child to further demonstrate Intel’s commitment to helping the girl child realize her potentials and improve their opportunities for employment and income generation while embracing technology and the Internet.

ITRealms further gathered that to drive home the message with storytelling, over 500 girls and young women including, government functionaries, NGO partners watched the Girl Rising video series ‘Da Bazar Mu’ which literally means ‘Dancing to Women’s Tune”.

The key message of the video series was centered on encouraging and motivating the girl child to see education as a necessary step towards the accomplishment of their dreams.

Representatives of the girls including two beneficiaries of Intel She will Connect initiative gave presentations to affirm their commitment to acquiring education and relevant technology skills that would ensure they achieve their dreams.

The International Day of the Girl Child Event echoes the need for more opportunities for girls, and increases awareness on the inequalities faced by girls worldwide.
