NCS to confer fellowships on 55 Nigerians @NITMA2022 - ITREALMS

The 2022 edition of the Nigerian Information Technology Merit Award (NITMA) is set to conferred fellowship on 55 worthy Nigerians, reports ITREALMS.

NITMA is a flagship event organized by the Nigeria Computer Society (NCS) in recognition of outstanding Nigerians in the Information Technology (IT) industry.

Breaking: 3 Nigerians selected for ICANN65 NextGen fellowships - ITREALMS

ITREALMS:

Three Nigerians have been selected for the NextGen fellowships by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) for the ICANN65 in Marrakech, Morocco, reports ITREALMS.

The trio include Sulaimon Moriam Omowunmi from University of Ilorin, Adisa Bolutife from University of Lagos and Oluwaseun Sanjo Ajani from University of Ibadan.

They emerged from the 12 fellows selected to participate at ICANN65 billed for June 24 through 27, 2019 in Morocco.

ITREALMS reports that ICANN named the individuals selected to participate in the NextGen programme at ICANN65, following exercise by independent selection committee which saw the successful candidates by reviewing their current field of studies and interest in the Internet ecosystem's ongoing work on global policy and Internet governance.

These 12 individuals, ITREALMS gathered are currently engaged in studies in African universities in the fields of computer science, law, and information technology.

In addition, three individuals who attended a previous ICANN public meeting with the NextGen programme will now serve as ambassadors for these newcomers.

The full list of the fellows comprised,

Innocent Adriko, Uganda Institute of Info and Comms Technology; Eileen Nay Kwipoya, Technical University of Kenya; Vallarie Wendy Yiega, University of Nairobi School of Law; Souad Abidi, Higher school of computer science ESI-Alg; Levy Syanseke, University of Zambia; Sulaimon Moriam Omowunmi, University of Ilorin; Nour El Houda Zouabi, Campus Universitaire, El Manar; Saffie Bobb,   American International University West Africa; Cynthia Jade Makory, Kenya School of Law; Adisa Bolutife, University of Lagos; Yashvi Paupiah, University of Mauritius; Oluwaseun Sanjo Ajani, University of Ibadan.

The candidates selected as ICANN65 ambassadors, include Melchizedek Alipio, Nertil Berdufi and Ihita Gangavarapu.

Women win top 3 Ideas Matter Research Fellowships for West African Scholars

Three women have emerged as the top three in the recently introduced 2016 Ideas Matter Research Fellowship for West African Scholars, reports ITRealms.

The West African Research Association and the MasterCard Foundation, ITRealms reports said they were pleased to announce the recipients of the Ideas Matter Fellowship Program, a new fellowship which supports the research of young academics in the region focusing on women, technology and entrepreneurship.

The USD$4,000 grants will allow recipients to solve some of the most trenchant health and economic challenges facing Africa today.

In this inaugural competition, the Ideas Matter Doctoral Fellowship program received 63 applications from graduate students representing 10 West African countries and fields as diverse as biology, agronomy, political science, medicine, public health, chemistry and pharmacy. While only 17 of the 63 applicants were women, the three applications which rose to the top were all submitted by young women - attesting to the growing role of women in science and technology. The three candidates selected from this rich trove of applications are:

Akomoun Blandine Kapko (Benin), Université d’Abomey-Calavi, will develop an inventory of plants used in the traditional treatment of typhoid fever, further working to identify and isolate their active properties.

Osemudiamen Anao (Nigeria), University of Benin, will explore the health effects of a toxic common component of e-waste capable of acting as an endocrine disruptor, carcinogen and neuro-development toxicant.

Gloria Tetteh-Kubi (Ghana), University of Cape Coast, will investigate measures aimed at reducing widespread pesticide use in cowpea cultivation, contributing to poverty reduction, food security and biodiversity conservation.

The Ideas Matter Fellowship Program reflects WARA and The MasterCard Foundation’s commitment to increasing opportunities for emerging West African scholars who are transforming ideas into active solutions to the challenges facing the region and the world at large.
