Top entries emerge @Etisalat Prize for Literature Flash fiction category

Nigeria’s most innovative telecommunications company Etisalat has announced the top successful entries for the 2015 edition of the Etisalat Prize for Literature Flash Fiction Category, reports ITRealms.

These stories were selected through a public online voting process which kicked off on 9^th November, 2015 and ended 25^th November, 2015

The top entries selected from over one thousand, three hundred entries include: Above Board, Zebra Crossing, Satan Be Gone, 3x, Blood on The Bench, The Time in Her Name, Human, Ole, Blood on The Soil, On Duty, The Surrogate, The Stoning of The Prophet, Para-Dise, Funke, He Was A Threat, Fetters in Love, Ìdànrè, August Meeting, Tears Salvation, Why I Broke The Gramophone, In the Act, True Beauty, Madness In Degrees, Free at Last, What a Day Offers and My Father.

Others are The Covens of Umuofia, It's in The Walk, A Moment's Worth, A Baby Changes Everything, Total Ubunyama, TsuntsunMakka, Hadiza's Walls, I Was Papa's Son, Tears of The Harmattan, Tipped Over, Samuel, Help, The Church Whisperer, The Word Catcher, Nameless, Homebound, In Loving Memory, Gone, Curse Of The Seven Days, Invincible, Eba, EfoRiro and A Serving of Tears, Broken Voices, The Bond, Dan Ruwa and And Death Doth Pass Me By.

Head of Events and Sponsorship at Etisalat Nigeria, Modupe Thani, disclosed this in Lagos and said the importance of Flash Fiction in the Etisalat Prize for Literature and in literary circles, represents the short form of storytelling, a common stepping stone for accomplished writers.

"Short stories are where a lot of writers discover and perfect their talent especially in this digital communication era where content is absorbed in few characters,” Thani said.

The Flash Fiction category is designed to celebrate short stories by upcoming writers. The winning author will be rewarded with a cash prize of £1,000, a high-end device and the promotion of published e-books, while two runners up will each receive £500 cash prize and a high-end device. Tanzanian writer and poet, Neema Komba, won the 2014 edition of the Etisalat Prize for Literature Flash Fiction Category.

The Flash Fiction category judging panel is made up of personalities who have established relationships with the African writing space spanning book clubs, poets, writers and critics. They include Toni Kan who serves as the panel Chair, Hawa Golakai, Abubakar Adam Ibrahim and Monica Cheru, who all   bring their experience to bear on this year’s edition of Etisalat Prize for Literature Flash Fiction Category.

NBC bags 3 Webjurist awards

The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has bagged three special Webjurist awards in the 2015 edition of the event organized by Phillips Consulting in Lagos, reports ITRealms.

The occasion held at The WheatBaker Ikoyi-Lagos saw the NBC clinching three Federal parastatals category awards including the Best Web Aesthetics, the Best Web Accessibility and the first place in the Webjurist awards, which is the overall.

ITRealms reports that largely this award is for federal government parastatal and state-owned websites and have been assessed based on the aesthetics, technical aspects, website content, user experience and performance.

NBC, ITRealms notes is a parastatal of the Federal Government of Nigeria, empowered to regulate the broadcasting industry based on Act 38 of 1992 as amended by Act 55 of 1999. 

While Phillip Consulting has held this awards for over 12 years, consistently rating the official corporate websites of financial, telecommunications and media institutions, during her annual Web-Jurist exercise.

According to Foluso Phillips, founder of Phillips Consulting Limited, the initiative has contributed to enhancing corporate websites, and increased the consciousness and interest of organisations in appreciating the value of well-articulated websites in today’s digitally driven economy.

ITRealms recollects that the Annual Web-Jurist Awads has become a highly recognised brand and Phillips Consulting Limited has gone further to produce analyses of each organisation’s website, in order to provide bases for improvement. 

“Websites today, have become not just the marketing and publicity face of organisations, but also an important aspect of service delivery and interaction with clients, customers and indeed all stakeholders,” officials said.

Etisalat partners Eko Hotel, AAF on LagosPhoto Festival 2015

The Innovative telecommunications operator, Etisalat Nigeria, is partnering with Eko Hotel and Suites as well as the African Artists Foundation (AAF) on the 2015 edition of the annual LagosPhoto Festival with the theme 'Designing Futures,' reports ITRealms.

The month-long event, ITRealms reports, opened for the public from October 24 at Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island is expected to come to a close by October 24, 2015.

Director, Lagos Photo Foundation, Azu Nwagbogu noted that the festival launched in 2010, is the first and only annual international photography festival in Nigeria, aimed at establishing a community for contemporary photography which will unite local and international artists through images that encapsulate individual experiences and identities from across all of Africa.

“It features exhibitions, workshops, artist presentations, discussions, screenings, and large scale outdoor exhibitions, presenting in the process a contemporary and historical visual essay of the continent to both local and global audiences,” he said.

Nwagbogu stressed that the essence is to offer Africans a platform that enables ownership of images and narratives about Africa and Africans.

He also said that LagosPhoto Festival enables affords them to create understanding why Africans have to take ownership of their own images and stories or narratives.

In the past, he said, the narratives that were made about Africa or Nigeria were given to locals by outsiders. “At Lagos Photo, we strive to take ownership of and to communicate this internationally because the world is shrinking around us. So it is very important for us to join the digital revolution and begin to communicate the more impactful vision for the country, the continent and for humanity as a whole,” he said.

Also speaking on its continued sponsorship of the Lagos Photo Festival, the Chief Marketing Officer, Etisalat Nigeria, Francesco Angelone, noted that the festival is in sync with the company’s vision of encouraging creativity and innovation through the creation of and support for credible platforms.

“Etisalat is passionate about innovation and creativity. We have also been in the forefront of promoting excellence, nurturing talent and providing platforms for people to express themselves and communicate their ideas. This is why we created the Etisalat Prize for Literature, the first ever pan-African prize aimed at recognizing and celebrating writers and other members of the literary community across Africa. It is in this light also that we have sponsored the Lagos Photo Festival right from inception about 5 years ago,” he said.

Mr. Angelone also revealed that a Gala night would be hosted on October 28 in honour of the participating photographers.

This year’s Lagos Photo Festival will feature 35 photographers from 18 participating countries including Egypt, France, South Africa, Italy, Ivory Coast, UK, India, The Netherlands, Spain, Belgium, Morocco, DRC, Ghana, Germany, New Zealand, USA, Switzerland, Guinea and Nigeria.

NCS invites members to GITEX 2015

The Nigeria Computer Society (NCS) has beckon on members nationwide to key into the 2015 edition of the Nigerian delegation to the GiTEX Technology show, slated for Dubia between 18 and 22 October, this year, reports ITRealms.

NCS made this call in one of its newsletters, describing GITEX as the biggest technology show in the Middle East, Africa and South Asia (MEASA).

Officials of NCS also recalled that Nigeria was the official country partner for GITEX for its 2014 edition held at the Dubai World Trade Center.

According to NCS, some of the benefits for its members taking place in GITEX 2015 include the opportunities to connect with over 139,000 Information and Communication Technology (ICT) professionals anticipated to come from 144 countries.

In addition, NCS said members are likely to benefit by way of working with the over 3,567 ICT companies from 54 countries, interaction with over 80% of the top ICT brand worldwide, stressing that there are direct business opportunities with decision markers around the world.

Equally, members of the Nigerian delegation, NCS pointed out would pave the way for the promotion and attraction of Nigeria's Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) opportunities to would-be investors across the globe, as well as showcasing the Nigeria brand to watch in the global ICT sector. 

NCS also invited members to participate by reaching out to be part of the sponsorship cum exhibitor as trade visitors to GITEX 2015.

They were encouraged to contact the chairman, Local Organising Committee for GITEX 2015, Dr. Vincent Olatunji or Segun Oruame, who represents the media trade partners in the country.

The call by NCS was in follows the earlier invite extended to stakeholders by the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) on behalf of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to join the Nigerian Delegation to GITEX Technology show 2015.
