Breaking: INEC chairman, Prof. Yakubu must resign say tweeps - ITREALMS

Some Nigerian tweeps have called on the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Prof. Mahmood Yakubu to resign with immediate effect, reports ITREALMS.

Tweeps are Twitter enthusiasts who often use the Twitter online message service to send and receive tweets.

According to tweeps who are canvassing for his resignation, Yakubu has crossed the redline by this alleged endorsement of the Presidential candidate of All Progressive Congress (APC), President Mohammadu Buhari (PMB) by adorning purported APC campaign cap to the National Council of States meeting recently, reports
ITREALMS.

This accusation spurred from a tweet @SweetShantel alleged that Prof. Yakubu was wearing a cap with APC’s logo, the broom.

She pointed out that this was the same cap President Buhari of APC wore recently during his campaign tour to Taraba State.

“What this means, is that @inecNigeria has endorsed PMB,” she lamented and called for his immediate resignation from office.

Another Tweep who goes with @Mr. Profit, says that if it were to be a cap designed for Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) campaign that APC will cry out and drummed support for @Sweetshantel.

Twitter.com, TweetDeck now on seamless log-in experience

As promised by Twitter a few weeks back, the social media company, says Tweeps can now login into TweetDeck or Twitter.com seamless, reports ITRealms.

People who use Twitter are known as Tweeps.

Confirming this to ITRealms, Product Manager at Twitter.com, Amy Zima (@amyzima), noted that though starting from March 17, 2016, this seamless log-in experience was announced but due for commencement on April 15, 2016.

Zima explained that henceforth, when Tweeps logged in to any Twitter website, like twitter.com or analytics.twitter.com, “you’ll no longer need to log in to TweetDeck separately.”

The product manager stressed that from now, when Tweeps move from TweetDeck to Twitter websites, or from these websites to TweetDeck, they’ll be automatically logged in, making it even easier to move between the tools they use daily.

Also, Zima advised those seeking more information about how this works, to check out Help Center.

“We’ve been working on infrastructure projects like this to ensure we have a stable foundation to continue improving TweetDeck in the future. Over the last year, we’ve shipped features such as TweetDeck Teams, group Direct Messages, and a confirmation step before Tweeting, as well as new search filters to make it easier to surface Vines, GIFs, Periscopes, and older content,” Zima said.

To better focus on enhancing TweetDeck experience, Zima further said, they would no longer support a standalone Windows app.

“If you use Windows, you’ll still be able to visit TweetDeck on the web — nothing is changing about TweetDeck itself, just where you access it from. This change will take effect on April 15th,” the product manager said.

Advising Tweeps that for easy access to ensure they have TweetDeck on the web by pinning TweetDeck to their taskbar or open tweetdeck.com in Chrome.

“Click customize and control > More tools > Add to taskbar or you can now launch TweetDeck directly from your taskbar,” Zima said.

Tweeps urge media managers to address gender parity in newsroom

ITRealms:
Twitter enthusiasts otherwise known as Tweeps, at the 2016 International Women Day (IWD) commemoration Tweet-chat hosted by the Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism (WSCIJ), urged media managers in Nigeria to address gender parity in the newsroom, reports ITRealms.

A press statement from the centre made available to ITRealms at the weekend by the coordinator, Motunrayo Alaka, said WSCIJ hosted the Tweet-chat on the theme: ‘Gender Parity in the Newsroom’ just as the call has become imperative due to the imbalance in the ratio of women to men in media organisations in the country.

In the conversation led by Former Director of Editorials, NEXT Newspaper, Amma Ogan and the General Manager, Radio One FM, Funke-Treasure Durodola, it was noted that there is an urgent need to ensure that more women occupy top editorial positions and cover major beats in the news media.

While the achievements of some women in the media were acknowledged, discussants said more women should be given equal opportunities like their male counterparts to maximise their potentials. Media managers were also urged to create an inclusive, flexible culture in the newsroom as well as work towards gender balance for leadership positions.
"#GenderParity in the #Newsroom is critical if the #Media is to lead the change it advocates," the Wole Soyinka Centre tweeted with its handle @WSoyinkaCentre.

According to Durodola, the mind-set of assigning female journalists to soft beats instead of the harder news needs to change to achieve gender parity. "How many women are in political desks in newsrooms? Or defence...” she lamented.  She however urged women who are given the opportunity to lead to consciously work on being different, mentor others and break new grounds.

Contributing, Ogan noted that media organisations should incorporate gender parity from "The first step, newsroom to boardroom," stressing that "You need an assigning editor who is aware of and understands why gender parity matters. Gender parity awareness promotes itself. Assigning editors must make the right choices.”

Other contributors noted that women have demonstrated that they can be trusted with more responsibilities in the newsroom based on the performance of those who have been in leadership positions over time. A call was also made for strong advocacy to protect women’s parity considering instances where some female journalists have been forced to resign or were sacked under difficult bosses.

Some discussants raised questions on how women struggle to be recognised in the newsroom while others stated that women have more domestic responsibilities than men, which limit their growth or participation in the newsroom. The media was also urged to celebrate the voice of women and their achievement in the newsroom and male journalists were charged to encourage their female counterparts.

The hashtags for the chat #ReportWomen #Pledgeforparity and #IWD2016 trended as number one in Lagos as the discussions gained momentum. The chat started at about 11:00am with a brief introduction of the WSCIJ project, Report Women which focuses on girls and women issues in Nigeria. The WSCIJ under the initiative has trained eighty journalists and commissioned thirty-one stories. It has also published a documentary titled, Report Women: The untold stories of girls and women, which is available on YouTube.

The organisation used the opportunity of the chat to celebrate top female journalists, past and present, including Anike Agbaje- Williams, the first female broadcaster at Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, (FRCN), late Remi Oyo former Managing Director of News Agency of Nigeria and President Nigeria Guild of Editors, Bimbo Oloyede who has a four-decade experience in broadcasting, Late Hajiya Bilikisu Yusuf, Columnist with Daily Trust and Funke Egbemode, Managing Director and Editor-in-Chief of New Telegraph, among others.

Alaka further said, earlier in the week, WSCIJ had in collaboration with the Centre for Black and African Arts and Culture (CBAAC), held a walkathon on Broad Street, Lagos, on Tuesday 8 March to encourage gender parity at all levels of society. Both organisations will also host a Symposium on Tuesday 15 March 2016 at Archbishop Soremekun Hall, Broad Street, Lagos, by 10am with Mrs Onari Duke, Chairman Board of Directors, Child Survival and Development Organisation of Nigeria as the lead speaker.

Football tweeps route for new African idols as Enyama top list

Barely 24 hours count down to the proclamation of Glo-Confederation of African Football (CAF) African Footballer of Year 2014, followers of key contenders on social media, especially Twitter, known as tweeps are routing their support for the Super Eagle Captain Vincent Enyeama @vincentEnyeama and current title holder, Yaya Toure @YayaToure as well as the Gabonese midfielder Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, reports ITRealms.

The pronouncement, ITRealms gathered is due at the gala nite slated to take place on Thursday, January 8, 2015 at Eko Hotel Convention Centre, Lagos.

The aforementioned trio, ITRealms reports, made the final lap following the verdicts from Head Coaches or Technical Directors of the national associations affiliated to #CAF, Vincent Enyeama and Yaya Toure are the leading contenders.

Touted as the Oscars of African Football the Glo-CAF award ITRealms reports is an annual event to celebrate the continent’s premium football idols for an individual award, personal performance of a player as football club or country a player represents to win tournaments like the FIFA World Cup, nations cup, champions league or Europa league, play minimal role in picking a candidate.

Thus Glo-CAF attracts the biggest names in world of sport, just as this year awards promises to surpass the last edition in terms of the detail of planning, and overall event quality and class.

ITRealms recalls that Nigerian golden gloves, Vincent assisted his club side, Lille to finish third in Ligue1, even as he assist the Les Dogues to the UEFA Champions League preliminary stages as well as leading the Super Eagles to the FIFA World Cup in Brazil round of 16 with top class saves.

To crown it all a prestigious French Newspaper, L’Equipe, picked him as best in Ligue1 for 2014.

Responding on his performance on the forth coming prestigious accolade, on Nigeria Super Eagle Twitter page @NGSuperEagles Goal Keeper Vincent Enyeama tweeted that “he has done enough to win #GloCafAwards2014, I deserve it.”

However, the President of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Amaju Pinnick said that Enyeama's individual exploits in 2014 will stand him out this time around. "He was in fabulous form for his club (Lille of France), and also played brilliant roles for the Super Eagles to reach the round of 16 at the Brazil 2014 World Cup. I am not in anyway disrespecting the other candidates. I have immense respect for them, but I will pick Enyeama," Pinnick said.

Corroborating NFF’s President, Former super Eagles Captain, Joseph Yobo expressed confident that “For me it was a great year and good season for Enyeama. All the nominated candidates are good but the Lille goalkeeper will dust his opponents and end Nigeria’s 15year wait for the continents prestigious award

More so, Felix Anyansi-Agwu, Chairman of Enyimba International Football Club of Aba, has thrown his weight on Enyeama that “ he has been outstanding for the club and country and when you judge his performance over the years, he deserves such an accolade.

Jamila Buhari, @jamilaAM Nigeria’s first female referee could not  hide her thought and believe when she said,  “Enyeama deserves to be given the award.  “He was even picked as the best African Goalkeeper of the Year at the FIFA level.

He singled himself out among the super Eagles with the passion of playing, and I pray the award finally goes to him,’’

Seyi Akinwunmi, NFA’s First Vice-Chairman, is also optimistic of Enyeama clinching the personal accolade.

“I think he should win it. I have given him my vote and I’m very hopeful, first of all as a Nigerian, but having watched Enyeama’s performance. There is no doubt in my mind that he will take it this time,” he said.
