Beloved friends, today’s readings, especially the first reading and the gospel, speak to us about hearing and answering the call of God. It is about vocations. Our vocation in life is that lifestyle or occupation, which not only fulfills the will of God for us, but also grants us the highest fulfillment and makes us happiest, and at the same time is to our greatest benefit and the benefit of our fellow humans.

In the first reading, we have an account of how God called Samuel to be a prophet, and the religious and temporal leader of his people Israel. It was a position then occupied by Eli, who is also mentioned in that reading, but who was already old. Samuel was still a young child then. He served under Eli at the shrine at Shiloh, until Eli died. At the death of Eli, he took over. He became the spiritual, religious, and temporal leader of the people of Israel. In the gospel we are presented with an account of two men who heard and answered the call of God, Andrew and Simon Peter.

There are a number of things that we can learn from today’s readings. Firstly, each of us has a call in life. God calls each of us to a particular vocation in life, and it is in that vocation that we will find the highest happiness and fulfillment in our lives, and the greatest benefit to others. In other words, our vocation in life is something of great importance. We need to discover and follow our vocations in life. 

We really need to. But discovering our vocation in life is never easy. Samuel in the first reading needed the experience and wisdom of Eli to hear and answer the call of God. Even after he answered initially, he still needed the help of Eli to understand how to follow his vocation on a day to day basis in his life. In the gospel of today, we see that Andrew needed the help of john the Baptist to answer God’s call, and he in turn helped his brother Simon Peter. 

We all need the help of others to answer God’s call. It is the duty of parents, guardians, and significant adults to help young people hear and answer God’s call. And this has to be done selflessly and prayerfully. The selfish intentions of adults should have no place in it.

Second, there are also calls within a call, or vocation within a vocation. Even after we have discovered our vocations, after we have heard and answered God’s call, we need to be attentive to the Holy Spirit because God can call us to something higher, he may want us to take another step forward. Peter the apostle was first called to be an apostle, but later he was called to be the leader of the apostles and leader of the church.

Pope Francis was first called to be a priest, later a bishop; but now he has been called to be the pope. Oscar Romero of El Salvador was first called to be a priest, later called to be a bishop, and later again called to be a voice for the voiceless and oppressed people of his society. Martin Luther King Jnr was first called to be a father and a preacher, but later called to be the voice to challenge the injustice in the American society of his day. Mahatma Gandhi was first called to be a lawyer, but later called to be the one to lead his people non-violently into independence.

What about you! What about me! Even though we may have answered the first call of God, we need to be attentive to the Spirit of God lest God is calling us to take another step forward, lest God is calling us again within our initial call. And for young people who are yet to discover their vocations in life and answer the voice of God, please listen attentively to God, and when you have heard his voice, please answer him, and like Samuel, say, ‘here I am lord. Speak for your servant is listening.

Scientists discover oxidants aren’t always ‘bad’ for heart

A group of scientists funded by the British Heart Foundation have discovered that oxidants, which have historically been blamed for heart disease, have a vital role at ensuring the heart pumps blood around the body effectively, reports ITRealms.

The discovery by researchers working collaboratively in Manchester and London, ITRealms gathered, opens up the potential for new treatments thereby offering hope for potential new treatments for high blood pressure and heart failure.

Also, ITRealms reports that the researchers now hope to develop drugs based on their discovery that could lower blood pressure and treat conditions caused by the heart not pumping properly, including certain forms of heart failure.

The study, published, Tuesday in Nature Communications, found that when the heart relaxes oxidants are released which activate an enzyme called Protein Kinase G (PKG), in a process called oxidation. The oxidation of PKG helps to ensure the amount of blood entering the heart is the same as the amount pumped out. This is vital in the functioning of a healthy heart.

However, when the researchers looked at the hearts of mice with a form of PKG that cannot be oxidised, they found that their hearts did not fill with blood properly and that their heart function was compromised.

The findings in the heart were complemented by BHF-funded research on arteries published recently in Science Signaling. The BHF researchers found activation of PKG by oxidants is also critical for the way arteries sense high blood pressure and then relax.

The researchers, led by BHF Research Fellow Dr Adam Greenstein from The University of Manchester, found that when arteries sense high blood pressure inside them they generate oxidants which activate PKG. The activation of PKG in response to pressure then relaxes the arteries. In mice with PKG that cannot be oxidised, the arteries constricted more strongly and this caused high blood pressure.

The scientists believe that dysregulation of the activation of PKG may occur in several cardiovascular diseases. They now hope to develop drugs which can mimic the oxidant-induced relaxation of the heart and arteries, to treat patients with problems in the way their hearts fill and pump blood around the body. This may also be valuable in lowering blood pressure.

“Our research supports the really exciting concept that oxidants, traditionally viewed as ‘the bad guys of the cardiovascular system,’ are increasingly appreciated as integral to normal heart and arterial function," said Dr Adam Greenstein of The University of Manchester, who is an author on both papers. “This ties in with lots of misinformation about commercially available antioxidants and heart disease which takes focus off the real risk factors, such as weight, cholesterol, blood pressure and smoking.”

“These new papers demonstrate just how important PKG is in the regulation of the heart and blood vessels," said Professor Jeremy Pearson, Associate Medical Director at the British Heart Foundation, which funded the research. “The studies provide strong evidence that new drugs which target PKG activation are likely to be useful in patients suffering with heart failure or with high blood pressure.”

Tech players discover new markets

Technology companies from Poland are on the path to power the next stage of diversified economic growth in the country, ITRealms reports.

ITRealms also gathered that technology intensive industries, although currently only a small part of Poland’s economy, have grown at 7-10 per cent since 2004, outpacing the overall economy, according to a recent report by consultancy McKinsey Insights.

Anna Hejka, founder of Heyka Capital Markets Group and managing partner of its VC and seed investment funds, noted that for future economic growth and a rising Gross National Happiness index, Poland needs to drive investment in technology-intensive industries, high-tech clusters, and research and development.

Presently, ITRealms reports that the Middle East and Africa is an excellent opportunity for Polish tech companies to deepen their relationships with emerging markets in Asia, Latin America and Africa, expanding exports and attracting new capital investment.

Iconway launches PricePadi.com
