Foremost civic society organisation on anti-corruption and transparency in governance, the Human and Environmental Development Agenda (HEDA Resource Centre) has commended the President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Mr Yakubu Maikyau, for boycotting the recent Bar ceremony over the refusal of the Chairman of the Body of Benchers, Chief Wole Olanipekun, from presiding over the ceremony on moral and ethical ground.

The Civil group in a letter signed by its Chairman, Olanrewaju Suraju, titled ‘Solidarity with the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) on Boycott of the Call to Bar Ceremony’, described Mr Yakubu Maikyau’s action as standing for the truth and defending the professional integrity of the association, therefore raised concerns over the legal profession's gradually loss of respect and prestige for which it was renowned over the years.

In the letter addressed to the NBA President, HEDA argues that, “We cannot agree any less with you that the legal profession is gradually losing its respect and prestige earned over the years.

His Royal Highness (HRH), Igwe Ezekwesili Maduagwuna, Ofemili 1 of Awba-Ofemili, recently celebrated the traditional new yam (Iri Ji) ceremony, at his palace in Awba-Ofemili, reports ITREALMS.

Disclosing this in Awba-Ofemili, Igwe Maduagwuna said the ceremony was to thank God, not only for the flood, which has receded significantly, but for also for little bounty harvest that has kept the community going and the prevailing peace.

Dangote, Rabiu, others for Editors’ Plaza Foundation laying ceremony

The Africa’s richest man and President of Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, is to play the role of Chief Guest of Honour at the foundation stone laying ceremony for the multi-purpose Editors’ Plaza, a project of the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) scheduled for Thursday, March 1, 2018 in the Guzape District of Abuja, reports ITRealms.

Former Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Senator Godswill Akpabio, who is also the Senate Minority Leader will chair the event while the Chairman of BUA Group, Alhaji Abdulsamad Rabiu, will perform the traditional ‘turning of the sod’ to herald the construction of a befitting plaza for Nigerian editors in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Alhaji Mohammed Bello, and his Information and Culture counterpart, Alhaji Lai Mohammed are also expected to grace the occasion.

Other dignitaries expected at the event are, heads of ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs), members of corporate Nigeria, the business community, media executives, etcetera.

The turning of the sod for the Editors’ Plaza is sequel to a fund-raiser on April 10, 2014 in Abuja under the leadership of the then President of the Guild, Mr. Femi Adesina. The goal was to raise funds to build a befitting secretariat for the Guild in Abuja to be named Editors’ Plaza.

Part of the money realized from the fund-raiser has been used to acquire a property in Ikeja area of Lagos State christened Editors’ House which functions as the Guild’s secretariat in Lagos.

The President of the Guild, Mrs. Funke Egbemode, said part of the proposed Editors’ Plaza in Abuja would serve as the Guild’s secretariat while the rest would be leased to the public as offices.

When completed, the multi-storey edifice which sits on an expansive 5,600Sqm piece of land will add to the vastly changing Abuja landscape.

According to Egbemode, the construction of the Editors’ Plaza offers friends of the Guild, individuals and corporates, and all advocates and lovers of free press an opportunity to partner with Nigerian editors whom she described as the torchbearers of the nation’s democracy.

PIN holds #DigitalJobs project 1st anniversary

The Paradigm Initiative Nigeria (PIN) has said it would mark first year anniversary of its project, #DigitalJobs with a brief ceremony, ITRealms reports.

Over the last one year, PIN has reached well over 14 million Nigerians with  #DigitalJobs project, a multi-media campaign informing high-potential young Nigerians of an online work platform; where people who have the required skills can provide their services to virtual employers and be paid.

ITRealms gathered that recently, the popular online work platform, bit.ly/elancedja, was upgraded to www.upwork.com to help online workers access more opportunities.

The campaign has employed various means to raise awareness, engage and deliver its activities over the last one year, and PIN will be unveiling what tremendous milestones this project has recorded as it marks.

 As one of the vital stakeholders on this project,PIN would be honoured to have you to grace this occasion, ITRealms learnt.

We would also be using the opportunity of this brief meeting to listen to your feedback and suggestions as we look towards taking the project to its next level.
