Nokia Networks, SmarTone partner for LTE in Macau

Nokia Networks and SmarTone have entered into partnership agreement that will upgrade the existing 3G network to 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) in one of world's most densely populated regions, Macau, ITRealms reports.

In the scope of the 5-year contract, Nokia Networks is planning and deploying the operator's 4G LTE network in one of the world's densest traffic areas. Macau residents and tourists can benefit from superior mobile broadband connectivity with comprehensive coverage, capacity and quick Internet response times.

According to a press release emanating from the partnership,  Nokia Networks' multi-layer optimization services will ensure seamless interaction between different technologies (2G, 3G, LTE) and frequency layers for the best customer experience, while its systems integration expertise will allow for a smooth migration of data to the new Subscriber Data Management platform, facilitating the rapid launch of new services in the future.

The Chief Executive Officer, SmarTone, Macau,Patrick Chan, said: "As a customer-centric company, we have been delivering outstanding experiences to our customers in 3G and will do the same in 4G LTE. As we are evolving our network infrastructure to address future capacity requirements, our longstanding partner Nokia Networks helps us seamlessly migrate to a 4G LTE network to provide our customers in Macau with an enhanced mobile broadband experience,"  ITRealms gathered.

While the Head, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau Sub-region, Nokia Networks, Michael Shieh, said, "We are proud to be working with SmarTone on its journey to ultra-fast LTE-based broadband connectivity, having already helped the operator build its 2G and 3G networks. Nokia Networks, ITRealms recalls, has more than 180 LTE customers, which serve subscribers across all continents, including many of the world's most vibrant metropolitan areas, with fastest mobile broadband. The company completes more than 300,000 site activities every year, with a new site coming on air every 100 seconds.

Nokia, China Mobile enter 5G MoU for next generation MCT

The Vice President, China Mobile Research Institute, Huang Yuhong, has said the 5G Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Nokia Networks will build a solid foundation for both parties to cooperate on the next generation of mobile communications technology (MCT), ITRealms reports.

He added that "5G will have a far-reaching impact on the telecommunications industry as well as various other industries, societies, families and individuals

Nokia Networks and China Mobile Research Institute (CMRI)  recently announced a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on their strategic cooperation in the evolution and development of 5G. The agreement was recently signed by the Vice President, China Mobile Research Institute, Huang Yuhong, and Head, Technology, Greater China, Nokia Networks, Vicki Zhang.

Nokia Networks is the first non-Chinese vendor to sign a 5G-related MoU with CMRI. The two parties will work together on the research, standardization and industrialization of key 5G features such as multi-connectivity and high-speed seamless mobility.

Vicki Zhang, said: "I am happy to see that Nokia Networks is the first non-Chinese vendor to sign a 5G strategic cooperation agreement with China Mobile Research Institute. We started to actively drive 5G development in China as early as 2013, and have made great efforts to encourage Sino-EU 5G strategic cooperation. As a global leader in 5G research and industrialization, Nokia Networks will help China Mobile play a key role in the next generation of mobile communications." 

Nokia Networks and CMRI will cooperate on a wide range of 5G areas which include 5G services scenarios and requirements of network infrastructure as well as 5G infrastructure support forIoT services and the joint development of a vision.5G global standardization and industrialization to enhance cooperation in international 5G organizations such as 3GPP and ITU and jointly drive a unified global 5G standard to jointly promote the role of TD-LTE evolution in 5G via the GTI platform.

It will also involve working together on 5G spectrum and explore the availability of additional harmonized global spectrum for 5G.Research, system concept and prototyping of key 5G features including 5G multi-connectivity solutions; 5G seamless mobility; and Massive MIMO.5G use cases conducting joint demos on typical 5G applications as well as verifying key 5G technologies and systems in field trials.

Nokia Network, SK Telecom alliance drives 5G in Korea

The Executive Vice President, Mobile Broadband, Nokia Networks, Marc Rouanne, has said that with SK Telecom in Korea, Nokia has achieved a unique distinction demonstrating that it is at the forefront of 5G-related initiatives, ITRealms reports.

"Together with SK Telecom, one of our long-standing customers in Korea, we have achieved a unique distinction demonstrating that Nokia is at the forefront of 5G-related initiatives. Moreover, this engagement also underpins our vision to be recognized as the enabler of 5G in Korea and across the globe, a goal that is the driving force behind all our R&D efforts in this area."

Chief Technology Officer, SK Telecom, Alex Jinsung Choi, said,  “With the world's first demonstration of the cmWave technology, we have reached a significant milestone towards realizing 5G. The 19.1Gbps transmission speed we achieved almost meets one of the key capabilities of 5G defined by the ITU-R. SK Telecom will continue to work closely with Nokia Networks to maintain this momentum towards creating a new era of communications."

ITRealms gathered that SK Telecom and Nokia Networks recently together demonstrated Nokia Networks' cmWave technology, setting a new milestone that adds momentum to the standardization of 5G* technologies. In a joint 5G trial in South Korea, the two companies achieved 19.1 Gbps transmission speed over the air using 256 quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM), 8x8 Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) transmission and 400 MHz of bandwidth.

This initiative underlines the leadership of both Nokia Networks and SK Telecom in developing the framework for superb 5G-based value propositions for users and fostering future service innovation. It also showcases the potential of 5G to transmit massive amounts of data in the blink of an eye, which would, for example, enable a user to download a full-HD movie in a matter of seconds, ITRealms reports.

2015 has been a landmark year for the ever-strengthening relationship between SK Telecom and Nokia Networks. Both companies have played a pivotal role in setting the pace for the telecommunications industry in Korea. In the recent past, they have successfully verified key technology for 5G core networks, demonstrated 600 Mbps data transmission rates using 4X4 MIMO technology over LTE and also commercialized a core LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) technology called 'Enhanced Inter-Cell Interference Coordination' (eICIC) for the first time in the world.
