ACROSS Nigeria, citizens and governments mark Armed Forces and Remembrance Day on Thursday, January 15. Beyond being a day set aside to honour the men and women who paid the supreme price in the defence of the country, and to reflect on the true cost of peace, unity and sovereignty, the day is one of the most solemn and significant dates in the nation’s calendar but unfortunately, not many citizens know.

Remembrance Day is traditionally observed with prayers, wreath-laying and memorial ceremonies at cenotaphs and state arcades, where members of the armed forces, security agencies, public officials and ordinary citizens gather to pay tribute to fallen heroes of Nigeria’s wars and internal security struggles.

The final words in Timothy Ofoegbu’s recent podcast are: “Ka uche anyi di ya.”

He repeats the line for emphasis before the short film fades out. To me, that phrase encapsulates the entire essence of his message.


Since encountering this film on social media about three months ago, I have watched it several times. I have even used it in one or two of my social reformation live campaigns. In many respects, I consider Ofoegbu’s intervention comparable to “Yoruba Ronu” — the late Hubert Ogunde’s clarion call to the Yoruba people during Nigeria’s First Republic.


“Yoruba Ronu” (meaning, Yoruba people, think) became an appeal to collective introspection and renewal. It urged the South-West to rethink its direction and re-engage Nigeria’s political, economic, and socio-cultural landscape with a more strategic consciousness. To a large extent, Yorubaland has dutifully applied that template — and the results have not been unkind to them.

Socrates once reasoned that “an unexamined life is not worth living.” The same applies to societies and nations. When the writer and philosopher Chinua Achebe penned his small but profoundly insightful book, The Trouble with Nigeria, he attempted — albeit unsuccessfully — a form of “Yoruba Ronu” for the entire Nigerian society.

NUMBERS carry enormous power. They clothe themselves with infallible authority, convincing the public that they reveal cold, hard truth. Yet statistics are never innocent. In the hands of unclean minds they can be manipulated so crudely to serve selfishly, even to the level of destroying beyond redemption whatever they tag. 

History is filled with shady characters and agencies that have done that. Somehow, they always eventually, fail in the ignoble beat. Nigerians may have just witnessed an example of such an ill-purposed misadventure.

Preparations for Anambra State’s gubernatorial election on 8 November are in full swing, raising hope that the state may once again find itself under leadership capable of steering her towards progress and stability.

Yet such optimism could easily sour if the victor emerges through fraud, violence or manipulation. A candidate propelled by forged qualifications, bribed officials or shady political dealings may win office, but Anambra will lose. Victory achieved by “any means necessary” would not only undermine governance but poison the moral fabric of society.
