Fines can never solve Nigeria’s telecoms quality of service crises, says ALTON boss - ITREALMS

The recurring challenges affecting service quality in Nigeria’s telecommunications sector cannot be resolved through regulatory fines and sanctions alone, reports ITREALMS.
Fines can never solve Nigeria’s telecoms quality of service crises, says ALTON boss - ITREALMS
This assertion was made by the Chairman of the Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON), Engr. Gbenga Adebayo.

Speaking as the keynote speaker at the inaugural Nigeria Information Technology Reporters Association (NITRA) Scientific and Innovation Conference, Adebayo emphasized that telecom operators function within the exact same socioeconomic framework and ecosystem as every other sector of the economy.

He argued that penalties fail to address systemic external factors, noting that regulators often overlook the broader societal environment that directly impacts service delivery.

Highlighting critical operational bottlenecks, Adebayo pointed to infrastructural hurdles such as Right of Way (RoW) delays and recurring fiber optic cable cuts.

He explained that operators face extensive bureaucratic hurdles rather than swift, seamless approvals, and cautioned that penalizing providers while these foundational problems persist remains ineffective.

Addressing network technology upgrades and broadband expansion, the ALTON chairman noted that while multi-generational mobile technologies coexist across various urban and regional centers, achieving true, high-speed, consistent broadband requires extensive, continuous fiber penetration nationwide rather than mere theory or expectation.
