The Anambra State Police Command has launched a formal investigation into an alleged child trafficking incident at Divine Mercy Hospital, Awada, following the dramatic rescue of a female suspect from an angry mob, reports ITREALMS.
According to eyewitness accounts, the suspect, disguised in attire resembling that of a nurse, allegedly gained unauthorized access to the hospital’s maternity ward.
She was reportedly observed making clandestine video recordings of newborn babies. When confronted by hospital staff, Nweme falsely claimed to be an employee.
Management at Divine Mercy Hospital subsequently confirmed that she was not a member of their workforce.
The intervention by the police successfully de-escalated the situation, preventing the mob from harming the suspect.
The Anambra State Police Command Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the development in a statement issued on Thursday.
He noted that the suspect is currently in protective police custody and is assisting investigators in identifying potential accomplices.
The Command has assured the public that further updates regarding the investigation will be communicated as the situation unfolds.
