Buhari names June 12 Nigeria Democracy Day

The Federal Government of Nigeria, has named June 12th as Democracy Day in honour and commemoration of the June 12 election in 1993, reports ITRealms.

The June 12, 1993 general election in Nigeria was the most pronounced freest and fairest elections following the candidates of then Social Democratic Party (SDP) filled two Moslem candidates led by Chief MKO Abiola and Alhaji Babagana Kingibe, using the Option A4 introduced by the Prof. Humphrey Nwosu-led National Electoral Commission (NEC).

Proclaiming this development in a public statement personally signed by President Mohammed Buhari on Wednesday, June 6, 2018,and made available to ITRealms, he said his administration decided on this after wide consultations, noted that June 12 henceforth will place May 29 as a National Public Holiday in celebration of Nigeria Democracy Day.

He equally honoured acclaimed winner and presidential candidate of SDP, Chief Abiola with posthumous award of the highest honour of the land, Grand Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (GCFR) and Kingibe with Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger
(GCON), alongside late Chief Gani Fawehinmi, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) with another posthumous GCON.

The families of all the awardees including Kingibe himself have accepted the honour, which some political observers see as aimed at currying vote of the West in 2019, which is around the corner.
