2019 Presidency: Dankwambo says I'm running to win, fight poverty, injustices - ITREALMS Online

The Presidential aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ibrahim Hassan Dankwanbo, has declared that if elected president in 2019, he will fight  poverty and injustices in the country, reports ITRealms.

Dankwanbo, who is the incumbent Gombe State governor, expressed resolve to defeat the Presidential candidate of All Progressives Congress (APC) and other parties in the February 2019 election.

The governor, a former Accountant-General of the Federation (AGF) and Ph.D holder in Accounting, said the number one priority of a leader was to ensure the happiness of citizens by removing poverty and injustices from the polity.

Dankwambo also said it was wrong for some people to be spreading rumours that he was no longer in the presidential race.

"I am running. And I will win. Extensive consultations have been done and Nigerians will soon see a wind of genuine renaissance blowing all over their land.

“I have come to the realisation that what Nigeria needs at this time is a man who can take the country on a journey to its best self, a man who can re-energise a people who have been so badly led that they have accepted a certain impotence as the reality of their lives”.

Declaring that he is the best man for the job, Dankwambo said: “Nigeria needs a man who can fire its imagination, release the people from shackles and make them blossom. I am the man. I don't want to just be President, I want to be the leader of a 180 million-strong army of achievers.

“President is just a title. What Nigeria needs is a leader, a warrior on the frontline in the fight against poverty and all kinds of injustices our people are suffering today."

The 56-year-old politician graduated from the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, Kaduna State in 1985 with a degree in Accounting.

He obtained a Master of Science degree in Economics from the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka, Yaba, in 1992 and a Ph.D in Accounting from Igbinedion University, Okada, Edo State.

He worked at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) from 1988 to 1999 before he was appointed Accountant-General of Gombe State.

He later became the Accountant–General of the Federation on April 20, 2005 and held this office until he resigned to start his campaign for election as governor of Gombe State in January, 2011.

M.D School, 7 others win British Council International School Award

Eight schools in Nigeria have been awarded the British Council’s prestigious International School Award in recognition of their work to bringing the world into the classroom.

The International School Award is a badge of honour for schools that showcase outstanding work in international education, such as through links with partner schools overseas. 

Fostering an international dimension in the curriculum is at the heart of the British Council’s work with schools, so that young people gain the cultural understanding and skills they need to live and work as global citizens.

The eight schools honoured on Thursday in Lagos were Child of Promise School (Lagos), Hallmark School (Lagos), Linsy High School (Lagos), Linsy Nursery & Primary School (Lagos), M.D School (Lagos), Olumawu School (Abuja), Riverside Montessori School (Ogun) and Supreme Education Foundation Schools (Lagos)

Some of the range of international work taken on by the various schools included Creating Wealth from Waste, Cultural Diversity, Learn my Language, Life in Slums, Child Labour, Saving the Girl Child, Nature Conservation and Natural Resources and Sustaining World Peace.

Lynda Ashaolu, Project Manager, Schools Education, British Council, said: “The International School Award is a great chance for schools to demonstrate the important work they’re doing to bring the world into their classrooms. 

“Adding an international dimension to children’s education ensures that they are truly global citizens and helps prepare them for successful future careers in an increasingly global economy.”

The award is now available worldwide in countries such as the United Kingdom, India, Nigeria, Sri Lanka, Egypt, Lebanon, Cyprus and Pakistan as part of the British Council’s Connecting Classrooms programme. 

Around 5,000 International School Awards have been presented to successful schools in the UK since the scheme began in 1999.

The International School Award encourages and supports schools to develop an international ethos embedded throughout the school; a majority of pupils within the school impacted by and involved in international work; collaborative curriculum-based work with a number of partner schools; curriculum-based work across a range of subjects; year-round international activity; and involvement of the wider community.

Two Nigerians shine @Shell global entrepreneurship prize

Two Nigerian business owners, Mr. Precious Adeho and Mrs. Ngozi Deborah Atalor, have emerged winners in the 2017 Shell LiveWIRE Top Ten Innovators competition, a global contest open to beneficiaries of Shell LiveWIRE, and aimed at rewarding shining cases of innovation in businesses supported by the programme, reports ITRealms.

A press statement made available to ITRealms by the Media Relations Manager at Shell Nigeria, Bamidele Odugbesan, said they emerged at the merit prize along with four others in the same category, while businesses from the United Kingdom and Pakistan took the top and runner-up awards. The winners were announced during the Global Entrepreneurship Week holding November 13 – 17 in Freetown, Sierra Leone.

“We congratulate the Nigerians on this feat,” said General Manager, External Relations, The Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Ltd (SPDC.)  “Three Nigerians came up with creative ideas on energy efficiency and access to chemical and paint products, and were among 22 entrepreneurs from nine countries who vied for the prestigious prize. We are happy that young Nigerians have deployed the skills and funding assistance in our LiveWIRE training schemes and made a mark for themselves and our country.”

Adeho and Atalor won $5,000 each, the only Africans to clinch the prize. The overall winner received $15,000 while the three runners-up got $10,0000 each. Shortlisted businesses for the LiveWIRE Top Ten Innovators competition were judged by an international panel of business leaders, chaired by Mark Gainsborough, Executive Vice President of New Energies at Shell.

Trained by Shell LiveWIRE Nigeria, Adeho got a start-up grant to reposition his company, Emobella Engineering Nigeria Limited, which provides engineering services with a USP of 24-hour availability and high-quality customer service. The business model integrates a training programme for young people facing employment challenges in the region. Mr. Adeho said: “This is the best thing that has happened to me and my business. Shell LiveWIRE has taken our business to the global stage, and I want to thank Shell for the opportunity to showcase our vision.”

Atalor, a 2016 Shell LiveWIRE grant recipient, offers affordable solar energy solutions on a small scale to empower families and businesses in rural areas to adopt the technology. Her company, De-rahbs Energy Services, installs, services and repairs solar energy equipment, and provides a low-cost solar energy payment plan and training to future engineers and energy entrepreneurs. She said of the Merit prize: “I see the award as an encouragement to pursue my dream of taking solar energy to every home in Nigeria.”

Since its introduction in Nigeria in 2003, the LiveWIRE programme has trained 6,550 Niger Delta youths in enterprise development and management, and provided business start-up grants to 3,313.

Swift, Cobranet win NCC 2-slot auction on 25MHz in 5.4MHz

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has named Swift Networks and Cobranet, the winners of the recent auction of the Two (2) slot of 25 Mega Hertz (MHz) bandwidth each in the 5.4 MHz frequency spectrum band for utilization in Lagos State, reports ITRealms.

Sources at the Commission, confirmed to ITRealms, weekend, that the auction which had six pre-qualified bidders, was supervised by the Executive Commissioner, Technical Standard at the Commission, Engr. Ubale Maska.

He reportedly ensured that the process was fair, transparent and equitable.

ITRealms also gathered that in fulfillment of the auction requirements, bidders paid a non- refundable 10 per cent of the reserve price which was N18,750,000,000.

NCC, ITRealms reports, equally disclosed that each bidder had a runner who delivered their bid’s amount to the auctioneer and were supervised by the chief runner.

However, ITRealms further reported that the auction ended at the 11th round of bidding with Swift Networks and Cobranet emerging winners of the slot each at N27,659,347.10 per year.

Also present at the event includes Director, Spectrum Administration (NCC), Engr. Austin Nwaulunne, Deputy, Director Policy-Dr. Henry Nkenmadu, and Head, Public Relations, Reuben Muoka among others.

63 workers win trade restriction case against MTN

The Lagos Division of the National Industrial Court has ordered MTN Nigeria Communications to pay full four years post-disengagement salaries to 63 workers, who were laid off by the company in 2009, reports ITRealms.

According to reports by TheNigeriaLawyer, the court presided over by Justice P.O. Lifu also awarded additional N10,000 against MTN in favour of each of the 63 workers to cover the cost of filing the suit numbered NICN/LA/596/2013.

Justice Lifu said MTN must pay the judgment credit sum within 30 days from October 26, 2016 when the judgment was delivered, failing which the judgment credit would attract an annual interest of 10 per cent.

The claimants in the suit are Harrison Ossai, Gabriel Ameh and Stephen Mahaja, who sued on behalf of themselves and 60 other workers laid off by MTN with the condition that they must never work with any other telecommunication company for four years after their disengagement.

The claimants had, in their suit, claimed to have been subjected to financial hardship on account of the restraint of trade imposed them by MTN.

Ossai, in his testimony before the court, said the trade restraint imposed by MTN bungled his chances of being employed by Globacom and Airtel, which were other telecommunication companies, adding that after being sacked by MTN, he was jobless for six years.

Like other claimants, he urged the court to order MTN to pay him N10m and another N20m for filing the suit.

In his judgment, Justice Lifu said he was “satisfied that the claimants had proved their claims before the court as to the oppressive and unreasonableness of the restraint of trade covenant for four years for making and leaving the claimants hard and dry for four years.”

The judge held, “Terminating the employment of the claimants and at the same time restricting them from seeking any employment from the sector generally and preventing them to be acting as agents or adviser or to engage in any other concern directly or indirectly for four years is clearly unreasonable in the light of global economic challenges occasioned by recession, which has resulted in mass unemployment.”

The judge ruled that each of the workers was entitled to be paid his last gross salary for four years after being sacked and ordered MTN to pay with an additional N10,000 each as cost.
