Gavi facilitates 305,000 mpox vaccine doses for Nigeria - ITREALMS

Vaccines will be delivered to countries affected by the upsurge of mpox that continues to constitute a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC), just as the first shipment of 11,200 doses arrived in Nigeria on 20 December, reports ITREALMS.

A shipment of 11,200 doses, donated by the United States of America and facilitated by Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, have been shipped to Abuja, Nigeria, with delivery in the country expected today. This follows agreements signed in November by Gavi to facilitate the donation of 305, 000 doses of mpox vaccine to support the global and continental response.

Nigeria has become the first country to receive the new MenFive vaccine from the Gavi-funded global stockpile, with a shipment delivered by UNICEF arriving Tuesday evening, reports

Doses, ITREALMS gathered, will be used to respond to an on-going meningococcus C outbreak, targeting to vaccinate around a million children in six local government areas in Jigawa state: Babura, Birniwa, Gagarawa, Gumel, Maigatari, and Sule Tankarkar.

AU, Gavi ink new deal to drive vaccine uptake - ITREALMS

The African Union Commission (AUC) and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance (Gavi), have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to increase access and accelerate the uptake of life-saving vaccines across African Union member states towards supporting immunisation, providing technical and learning assistance and health systems strengthening.

The MoU was signed on behalf of the African Union Commission Chairperson by the AU Commissioner for Health, Humanitarian Affairs & Social Development (HHS) H.E. Amb. Minata Samate Cessouma and Africa Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) Director General Dr. Jean Kaseya, and Gavi Chief Executive Officer Dr. Seth Berkley.

Ghana approves second malaria vaccine - ITREALMS

Ghana – one of the first countries to vaccinate against malaria through the pilot malaria vaccine implementation programme (MVIP), supported by Gavi – has granted full national licensure to the R21/Matrix-M malaria vaccine, developed by the University of Oxford and manufactured and scaled up by the Serum Institute of India (SII).

This second vaccine comes alongside the RTS,S vaccine, which was prequalified by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2022 following a recommendation for its wider use in 2021. According to the WHO’s 2022 world malaria report, the disease killed 619,000 people in 2021 – with 96% of those deaths in the WHO African region, making malaria one of Africa’s biggest killers. Alongside existing interventions, this vaccine will help save more lives.

COVID-19 vaccine gets $2.8mn delivery boost @Sierra Leone - ITREALMS

The Gavi, vaccine alliance has boosted COVID-19 Vaccine Delivery Partnership, (CoVDP) by handing over vehicles, motorbikes and computers worth of US$ 2.8M to support Sierra Leone Vaccination efforts.

The items were officially handed over to Dr. Austin Demby, Minister of Health and Sanitation in Freetown and they included two pick up vehicles, 250 motorbikes, six computers and accessories and 300 tablets with power banks. In addition, 15 Peripheral Health Units (PHUs), and four District Vaccine Stores, will be connected to solar powered systems.
