Natural births still possible after cesarean - Study
A
new study has shown that women who had a cesarean section in a previous
pregnancy are much more likely to have a safer vaginal birth if their antenatal
care is led by a midwife, according to a new study from The University of
Manchester, reports ITRealms.
Experts
noted that although cesarean sections are safe, research is increasingly
showing that vaginal birth and labour protects against long term-risks such as
impaired immune response, asthma, obesity and type 2-diabetes in the baby. As a
result there is a growing emphasis placed by health authorities on promoting
vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC) where it is safe to do so.
The
new Manchester study, published in the journal Birth,
is the first to evaluate the influence on VBAC rates of midwife-led antenatal
care as opposed to care led by an obstetrician.
ITRealms gathered that using patient records, 405 women giving birth at one hospital
after a previous cesarean were examined in two groups. The first group
was from 2008 when antenatal care was led by obstetricians and, following a
change in hospital policy in 2009-2010, the second group was drawn from women
who had received midwife-led antenatal care in 2011.
The
number of women who intended to give birth by VBAC in 2011 was 90.3 percent,
against 77 percent in 2008. Those who actually achieved VBAC was also higher in
the midwife-led group with 61.2 percent instead of 46.9 percent. Both
represented significant increases in VBAC when antenatal care was led by a
midwife.
Dr
Helen White, a midwifery lecturer in the University’s School of Nursing,
Midwifery and Social Work, led the research. She said: “There were few
differences between the two groups of women we studied, so the main variance
was the professional responsible for their care.
“Where
it can be achieved safely, vaginal birth is preferable, but there’s a real
issue with women who have had a cesarean once, opting for the same
again. There aren’t many initiatives out there to break this cycle so
this finding is important for providing evidence that midwives are best placed
to promote vaginal birth.”
The
authors of the study are not proposing that women should reject cesarean birth
when they are advised to do so, but suggest that midwives are important figures
in promoting VBAC in suitable women.
There
is a three year gap between the two groups of women but in terms of age, socio-economics,
ethnic group and other variables, the groups are similar. The only
significant change was the change in policy to midwife led care in the
hospital. The results are also unlikely to be due to cultural changes over time
as the VBAC rates across England more generally did not change during the study
period.
Dr
White added: “The more we understand the role of the microbes living in the
vagina, the more we are uncovering the protective effects of labour and natural
birth against conditions such as diabetes and obesity.
“Midwife
led care is cost-effective and, if it safely reduces the number of repeat cesarean sections, then it’s even more beneficial for mothers and babies.”

Woman delivers child after 4years pregnancy
A woman,Nkechi Muojike, alias Mama four years has testified that she
delivered a bouncing baby boy after carrying her pregnancy for four years,
reports ITRealms.
She said this while glorifying God in the presence of a
teeming congregation on Saturday, at the 3rd anniversary celebration
of the Mercy of God Covenant Prayer Ministry in Aguda, Lagos, saying that her case
defied solutions until she met Prophetess Orjiugo Onyekwere who called God on her
behalf for safe delivery.
She said her ordeal began six months into her pregnancy
when a scorpion bite her on the belly while she was sleeping and from that
point on, the pregnancy began to diminish until it finally vanished.
The woman who is now a proud mother of a two and half
years old boy,ITRealms
gathered, said it was a harrowing experience for her as hospital after hospital
with their scans could not trace any living fetus in her tummy. She said,
however, that she was not deterred by doctors’ reports because she steadily
felt movement of the child in her back and immediately she came to the Mercy of
God Covenant Prayer Ministry, the child whom she has already named Chiziterem
meaning ‘I’m sent by God’, was repositioned and delivered safely.
Another testimony came from Comrade Chinedu Agina who said
that the ministry delivered
him from “wicked landlords who made themselves
pharaoh and took me to court without my knowledge until the prophetess revealed
my case”. He said they did not end there rather “they inflicted me with a
strange sickness called elephantiasis but I was healed by God through the
prophetess and today I can wear my shoes” adding that he has sworn to announce
the woman of God to the world.
In an exclusive interview with ITRealms,
Prophetess Orjiugo Onyekwere, the Founder of the Ministry, said that her ministry
is purely a prophetic ministry while explaining what made her ministry
different from others. Onyekwere emphasized that she always obey the voice of
God, that once you obey the voice of God you will not make mistake, even as she
prophesied that the insurgency currently terrifying the northeast part of the
country must end before this time next year.
She said that women come to the ministry and get children
and singles find their partners, adding that as a prophetic and deliverance
ministry she works according to the direction of the holy spirit, saying that
she also administers medication to people where necessary.
The message of the day, ‘Divine Open Door’ was delivered
by Evangelist Okechukwu Elisha Divine who said that God is God of principle and
order stressing that once you are with Jesus Chris, He will trouble your
enemies and settle you with the right
key to multiple blessings.
Highlights of the ceremony, ITRealms
reports, included cutting of anniversary cake, divine gift from prophetess
Orjiugo Onyekwere, drama and recitation of bible verses and unveiling of the
ministry’s almanac.
